Colman Pool update: Still on schedule for June 30 opening

Not that you’re likely to be thinking about outdoor swimming in this unsettled weather anyway, but – we just checked on the Colman Pool renovation project’s progress after receiving that new aerial view from Gatewood pilot/photographer Long B. Nguyen. Almost two months after we first reported that work was revving up, project manager Garrett Farrell tells us that they’re now pouring concrete, and the pool’s walls will be restored in that process. (In February, we published an aerial view of how the pool looked in torn-up mode.) We asked Farrell if the $1.4 million project was still going according to schedule. His reply: “No surprises, but the weather has been a challenge. Mother Nature has slowed us but not pushed us off track. We are still on track for June 30 opening.”

It sure would be appreciated if they reached final completion ahead of schedule. I’ve been hitting that pool for 4 decades and it’s the main reason I moved to West Seattle.
The West Seattle Rec pool on Thistle will be closing for repair during the time Colman would typically be opening. We’ll be without a pool for a while.

Thanks for the update, I didn’t realize the renovation work was so extensive! I can’t wait for June 30th :)

Looks like they moved the slide…is that permanent? Any other changes to the pool?
    Thanks!

Thanks Long B. Nguyen for all of the terrific ariel photos you provide. Truly a “big picture” perspective. Love ’em!

Southwest Pool is scheduled to be closed for maintenance March 26th- April 15th. There are two projects that will be completed during that time. Re-finishing of the gym floors, which requires that the building be entirely vacated due to the VOC fumes. This will take a full week. The regular yearly pool preventative maintenance will comprise the remaining two weeks.

Colman Pool traditionally opens for weekend operations only, on Memorial Day weekend. (May 26th this year.) Because the project requires plastering the pool shell, they need a period of dry weather to complete the work. Hence the delayed opening.

Southwest Pool will be open between May 26 and the June 30th completion date for the Colman project.

Sorry, comment time is over.
