West Seattle scene: The “fishing” cat, again

This cat has meme potential. We caught a photo of him/her outside Alki’s Spud Fish and Chips two weeks ago; just now, someone sent us this sighting via cameraphone. Smart kitty!

WSB — would you find out what the story on the kitty is? Is he/she a stray?

  • coffee January 15, 2010 (2:10 pm)

Oh, yes, what is the story on that cute cat! I hope that the employees are having some warm feelings and tossing out a few snacks for the kitty!

  • Julie January 15, 2010 (2:14 pm)

No, he isn’t a stray! I am pretty sure this is our cat. We live just a couple of blocks away, and everyone seems to know our friendly kitty. We definitely feed him…this just cracks me up.

Oh the secret lives of cats!!

  • Dan'a January 15, 2010 (2:59 pm)

This reminds me of a kitty that use to sit in a archway in front of a fish sellers cart I passed in Venice, IT, every morning on my way for tea.

Too cute. Order to go please… Is the cat’s name Sam? (I hope he/she is safe crossing the street…)

  • pam January 15, 2010 (4:52 pm)

We fed him a few weeks ago – he sat right outside the window where we were sitting and kept batting his eyes at my husband….

  • ali January 15, 2010 (6:04 pm)

could be Julie’s cat… or if this is a different cat and is wearing tags and a collar, it could be my neighbor’s cat Remy from a few doors down. he is fed a special diet and his owners would love it if no one fed him… but he is a sweetheart and would love all the pets and smooches you have! :)

  • Julie January 15, 2010 (6:55 pm)

Our cat also wears a collar with tags:)

  • TBMR January 15, 2010 (7:11 pm)

Love it- I must say it is nice to have a whimsical post after a long week of depressing news!

This is our cat, Remy and he definitely has a home & tags. We live down the street and we’ve recently just asked the staff at Spuds and Tully’s to stop feeding him fried food and milk because these 2 things will kill a cat (and humans too). He is well fed at home (he is on a special diet) and is extremely friendly which leads people to want to feed him. But this is a huge problem for us because his hair has started falling out and he has gained a lot of weight. Not to mention he probably has clogged arteries from the fried food they’re feeding him also. We want him to have a long healthy life, so if you are thinking of feeding him, please DON’T. You’re not doing him any favors by encouraging him to hang around a fast food joint and begging! We’ve also had to keep him inside more often…so if you want to keep seeing this friendly cat, we’d suggest you not feed him, for his sake. Thanks!

  • GenHillOne January 15, 2010 (8:10 pm)

I’d be willing to provide Remy with a tag that says “Hi, my name is Remy; I’m well-loved, please don’t feed me!” – love the photos…I’m envisioning a whole Alki series – Sunfish, Spud, who’s next?

  • kitty January 15, 2010 (9:45 pm)

re; GenHillOne – he needs more like a coat – a banner – a sign board. No one will take the time to read the tag. Too funny – like a little dog.

If you really want a cat to have a long, healthy life, make him an in-door cat. When we adopted our cats several adoption agencies/shelters in the area required that you sign a contract agreeing to keep your cats as in-door cats. In-door cats live TWICE as long.

  • MAS January 15, 2010 (10:29 pm)

Wow, that means our outdoor cat would have lived to be at least 40…

  • Leroniusmonkfish January 15, 2010 (10:49 pm)

Both of my cats were indoor/outdoor and one lived to be 21 and the other 20…

  • glocson January 15, 2010 (10:50 pm)

That cat was a car salesman in his former life. He has a way of getting treats from you. Let him enjoy the beach and being single already…

  • Leroniusmonkfish January 15, 2010 (10:55 pm)

I love the name Remy as one of my fave bands is Remy Zero…but I would have named him Tempurrrra.

  • Leroniusmonkfish January 16, 2010 (2:58 am)

    Tempurrra Catter

  • Cheryl January 16, 2010 (12:30 pm)

Smart kitty. He’s hanging out in front of the BEST fish & chips joint in West Seattle (arguably in the whole city). #justsaying

  • Heather Freeborne January 16, 2010 (12:41 pm)

This looks exactly like our cat, Cozy. She ran away April of 2008 when we moved to the area. If this is a female and you found her at that time please call me at 425-466-7550. Thank you! She has a chip in her that was placed at the Seattle Animal Shelter about 7 years ago.

The kitty is so cute. Hard not to want to feed the cat when it behaves as if it is a stray and cat lovers loved to be loved by cats — so they love to feed the cats. If it were my cat, I would not want it to be hanging out at Spuds. I would not want it hanging out down at the beach period, too much traffic. In my opinion, and I do love good fish and chips, Spuds is icky — the smell of that oil frying makes my stomach turn. I have a friend who lives very near Spuds and her house smells like Spuds oil…she hates the smell too. I am surprised more animals don’t hang out in front of Spuds due to the smell. Sorry to those who love Spuds, I respect your enjoyment of that place, and I’m happy the local business is doing well –despite my distates for their food. My hubby and I have never understood how this place became an institution in West Seattle, ugh. We ate there once and have never been back since 1997. I had to wash my clothes and my hair after getting home due to the smell — and the fish was very greasy and the chips tasted just like the fish. I prefer Sunfish for sure.

MEOOOOOOOOW tutu ! Cats are notorious for being fussy eaters. Do you see photos of him at sun fish ??????

  • ali January 17, 2010 (7:02 pm)

heather F – hi, it’s Remy’s neighbor again. rats, Remy is definitely a male kitty. they have owned him since he was a kitten. sorry, and i hope your sweet Cozy finds her way home soon. i will keep my eye out for her. :) -ali

  • J Winter January 19, 2010 (6:39 am)

Someone at spuds is not listening about not feeding Remmy. I ate there last night and when I left there he was eating a big bowl of fries. Even from 3 feet away we could read his collar that said DO NOT FEED

Sorry, comment time is over.
