wakefloodParticipantHi neighbors,
I’m contemplating major window replacement. I’ve heard and seen some horror stories from friends so I’m looking for folks with any good experiences?
I got one estimate from Clear NRG and was impressed with the quality of their product and company but they’re pretty high pressure to close the sale on that first visit. And a follow-up question was left hanging so…
…recommendations??

KevinParticipantYes… I too had an experience with Clear NRG, and they are definitely high pressure. They want both “decision makers” present during their presentation. This is a CLEAR tip off that a company is high pressure.
.
Does your favorite plumber or electrician want both parties present before quoting an estimate? – of course not!
.
My advice is to find a company that will replace just one window, and then go from there. Let that company replace ONE window, and then see how satisfied you are.
.
Most of these window and siding companies are only interested in selling a highly inflated “whole house” estimate.

Talaki34ParticipantThese guys are not a WS company, but they did an awesome job for me. Stansell Glass Inc. Great price and wonderful service.
Brian Pollack originally quoted the cost to do the windows before I even bought the house. I didn’t actually get around to replacing the windows until 18 months later and worried how much of an increase there would be, thankfully he stuck the bid.

DianaParticipantWakeflood, since I’ve been through this I’ll toss some thoughts out. You are contemplating a MAJOR window replacement. Good windows are expensive. Do you want new windows that are utilitarian or do you want windows that will add value to your property, work with your architecture, and will be an investment? Lots to think about. This is the route I chose to take. I hired a general contractor who provided me with options. Once the decision was made, the windows (some custom made and some stock)were purchased and installed by the contractor. I did NOT want to interview, agonize over product, or deal with window sales people. I had three projects and all the way around I was really pleased to have had done it this way. There are several general contractors that are WSB sponsors, maybe they might be interested? Hope my thoughts were helpful.

wakefloodParticipantThanks for the thoughts, all. I’ll drop a note back here after I get the work done and let you know how it turned out in case someone else is considering it as well…

ElizagraceParticipantI would recommend Classic Window Products. We worked with Mike Rogers and he was super helpful and well informed about a number of different window lines. In the end we went with Kolbe because it was the truest to the look of our older craftsman style home.
The best part is that he sells the windows and has a connection to the installation company but you don’t have to use them. we opted to because it was a 2nd story installation, and they were also phenomenal. I think the room was cleaner when they left then when they got there :)
The windows are more expensive than stock windows, but they are really worth it – they are beautiful, durable, and are completely in keeping with the feel of the house.

MellyMelParticipantElizagrace, did you go with Kolbe Heritage line? (All wood?)
I have been mulling over how to get a window in keeping with this 100 year old house. All I had come up with was Vashon’s cherrycreekwindows.com and they are beautiful but not, ahem, budget-minded.

MichelleParticipantWe have used Windocor in Ballard to replace all of our windows, back of the house first and then the rest of the house about 6 years later, we have been very pleased. One had a problem after a couple of years and they came right out to replace it. All wood frames for our old house. http://www.windorco.com

UrbanFabulousParticipantWe used Glass Doctor and they did a great, quick job. The owner is a really nice guy who also owns the Mr. Rooter, the plumbing business. We use them for our plumbing needs as well and have always been very happy. All of their services, windows and plumbing, we’ve felt like have been very fairly priced for high quality work. I’ve also felt very comfortable with all of his workers being in my house.

IrukandjiParticipantWe have Kolbe Heritage wood windows, some as part of new construction and some as replacements on a 1918 Dutch Colonial. We are REALLY happy with them, had them installed by our General Contractor.
