Robert2715ParticipantIs it available anywhere in West Seattle? I live in the Admiral District and every time I check status for my telephone # it says it isn’t available yet.
If Qwest doesn’t get of their keister I’m going to Comcast….

As near as I can tell, the whole concept of Fiber optic to the curb via qwest was a “pump up the stock price for the merger” advertising ploy twisting the assumed meaning for several plain english words.
Comcast is not fiber to the curb either.
I don’t watch much tv but I did see some obviously BS ads in August implying that the fiber qwest has to some of their non CO copper distribution points somehow made their DSL faster… There may be fiber to the curb in some market qwest serves but it ain’t this one.
Copper is regulated, paid for and supplies nearly all the monthly recurring revenues Qwest and the new company Centurylink are using to justify their stock swap. There is no compelling reason to actually invest in fiber that can be run to homes in this market.
If comcast was not such a thieving, lying sack of crap they could be doing some serious damage to qwest / centurylink dsl service here.
Fiber-optics exists from the neighborhood terminal to the Internet. Speed tiers of 7 Mbps and lower are provided over fiber optics in selected areas only.

dhgParticipantBest as I can determine, along Alki, DSL is limited to about 768kbps. That means Comcast is the only company that provides high speed broadband to the neighborhood because the DSL data junction is just too far. I’ve also tried Clear’s 4G and got poor results.

anonymeParticipantI’ve had QWest for years and found them to be among the dirtiest, most deceitful companies around, with the absolute worst customer service. If you can avoid them, do. I don’t know that Comcast is any better; it seems as if there are few good, ethical business choices any more, especially in the communications industry.

KevinParticipantWe have Comcast phone and internet and have always had great customer service, for the 12+ years that we have been with them.
.
We currently get around 15 – 16 Mbps consistently, with a potential for 20 Mbps once we exchange the existing modem with a newer model which they offer a free swap.
.
As for reliability, we see the occasional outage but generally very reliable.
.
They also provide much higher speeds if you want to pay more.

luckymom30ParticipantQuestion Kevin, who do you get your cable service throug, if you have it that is? We have the bundle, phone, internet for both wireless and desktop) and phone and want to find something other than Comcast since when our computer goes out we are left without phone service.

lazybeardParticipantI’ve had the service for about a month in Highland Park. It’s not fiber, it’s VDSLv2 if I recall. I didn’t need a technician even come to the house as all the work was done at the CO. I always do what I can do be a Comcast-free house.

Distance from the co is more limited, but neighborhood substations could mitigate that. Someone has to actually invest in the infrastructure within 2000 ft (electronic distance) from your location. Since I live near a traditional low rent area, (even though the Highpoint redevelopment brought in a lot of new owners of expensive real estate) I suspect we remain far down on the list.

KevinParticipantluckymom30 – if you are referring to TV, we use Directv. More channels that Comcast at a somewhat lower price at the time. As for backup phone service, we have ATT wireless. Hope that answers your questions.

nighthawkParticipantWe have Qwest for phone and that’s it. When we first moved here we were going to get Qwest DSL. We specifically ordered the highspeed DSL. It turned into this crazy thing because there computer says one thing but actual distance from the junction box is another. When the tech came out (who was really helpful and clued us in on the real situation even though the rest of customer service was clueless) was that we would only ever get slow speed if he could get it to work…needless to say we have Comcast now.
