anatidaephobiaParticipantI went to your website. Do participants need to be low income? And if so, how is that defined?
September 3, 2009 at 5:04 pm #676020
relationshipresearchMemberThanks for your question and interest in our study!
The qualifying income for participating couples is on a sliding scale based on the number of people in the household and the median income threshold for King County.
Please give us a call at the Relationship Research Institute at (888) 6COUPLE or send an email to couples@gottmanresearch.com.
Thanks again!

relationshipresearchMemberI should also mention that we are conducting a separate project titled “Couples Communication Study.” The details are below. If anyone could help spread the word about these two studies, we would be very grateful!
The “Couples Communication Study” is seeking volunteer couples to participate in a study about how couples make important decisions together.
Eligible couples will receive up to $100 cash for a brief phone interview and a 2-3 hour interview in your home with you and your partner.
If:
* You and your partner are at least 18 yrs old
* Have been living together for at least 3 months
* Have children under 18 yrs old living with you at home
* Receive government assistance (e.g. WIC, school lunch, food stamps, public housing, SSI or TANF, Medicaid or SCHIP)
You may be eligible to participate! Please contact couples@gottmanresearch.com or call (888) 6COUPLE or (888) 626-8753 and ask to learn more about the “Couples Communication Study.”

ellenaterMemberIs this the same Gottman who wrote the marriage book? The name is escaping me but it had something to do with statistical data and divorce rates.
Also, why only low income for the study?
Sounds interesting, though.
September 3, 2009 at 7:19 pm #676023
relationshipresearchMemberYes, this is the same John Gottman who wrote “Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work” and other titles. He is the Executive Director of the Relationship Research Institute, Professor Emeritus at UW, and Principle Investigator (lead researcher) of the Creating Healthy Relationships Study.
“Why only low-income couples” is a great question: We are focusing on low-income couples because it is an under-represented population in the research literature. Lots of studies have been done with high income couples, however the needs and dynamics of lower-income families are not necessarily the same as upper-income families. The idea is that when we understand more about low-income families, public policy and community services can better serve them to strengthen our community as a whole.

ellenaterMemberOK, thought so. Thanks for the info.
I like the theory behind low income but I don’t see how it’s going to translate. Sorry, I;m not trying to pick on you. Just wondering how that can translate into “better serving” them.

anatidaephobiaParticipantI guess low-income couples can have unique life stressors, though in this economy, almost everyone is currently struggling.
My bet is they’re getting better access to grant money for focusing on “low-income” families, but will then use all the findings of this study to implement an expensive program for the masses that is “research based”.
September 4, 2009 at 9:23 pm #676026
relationshipresearchMemberAnatidaephobia, your concern is certainly valid that the findings of this study with low-income families would be used for “an expensive program for the masses that is ‘research based.'”
Because of the unique nature of our funders, the Administration for Children and Families (DHHS), we are in a unique position to test the efficacy of this psycho-educational workshop. The overall goal is to create something effective for low-income couples that are seeking services at various DHHS affiliates, nation wide. The psycho-educational program that we are testing is designed to be low-cost and used with families with limited resources. Since it is designed to be used in conjunction with those already accessing DHHS services, any alteration to the design and feasibility of the workshop would change the meaning and efficacy of it.

ellenaterMemberrelationship research,
That IS pretty cool. I’m glad you posted that because it does give the low-income angle a bit more credibility. I used to work with low income families in Oregon and feel protective of their rights. Your study seems like it’s on the up and up and honestly, that is surprisingly refreshing. I used to witness all kinds of data collection and we were required to do all kinds of things for funding that I did not agree with. Most of it wasn’t harmful, per se, it just didn’t benefit the clients in any way shape or form. So, bravo!
I know Gottman is pretty well respected in the community, also. I am more inclined to check out his book now.
Are you flyering about the study? I’m sure there are a lot of people who would qualify who don’t read the blog! The library would be a good place for a flyer.
Keep us updated!

inactiveMemberrelationship research –
if you haven’t already, you might want to contact White Center Community Development Association as well as post on whitecenternow.com, WSB’s affiliate site – same owners-editors.
Dr. Gottmann and his research teams are universally well-regarded and considered the premier investigators in such relationship matters. I hope quaified folks take advantage of this unique opportnity.
Good luck with your project!

relationshipresearchMemberwestseattledood & ellenater
Thanks so much for the tip about contacting White Center Community Development Association and posting flyers at the library (when it reopens). I will follow up with them after the weekend!
We’ve had a good response to the study, however we’re in the last few months of recruitment and the more families that are involved, the stronger our results will be.
Thanks so much for the helpful ideas!

inactiveMemberHey rr –
just thought of couple more places you might plug into:
Southwest Youth & Family Services (on Delridge in WS) and Southeast Y&F Services in Rainier Beach area.
Also, to expand on e-nater’s suggestion – WS City libraries which might find more of your target participants are: Delridge, Highpoint and further southeast in South Park. King County’s White Center library might be another.

relationshipresearchMemberWSD, many thanks!

ellenaterMemberYou may want to contact West Seattle Helpline, too. They are connected with many local orgs. and events and might take a flyer. I’d be willing to bet they’d point you in more directions, too.
Good luck!
