GenHillOneParticipantI think it’s safe to say “when it gets dark” though sometimes we see some nearby ittybittys/toddlers (that may only go to a few houses) come a little earlier.

GenHillOneParticipantFor crying out loud, as I recall, k just moved here not that long ago. The news was filled yesterday with stories of neighborhoods and entire towns officially scheduling trick-or-treating for Saturday night or whatever, so I get why people have been asking questions. How about using that stick for something more productive.

kParticipantjust moved back to the area last fall and living in a new area of west seattle. i was just curious. some cities are actually using official times. just thought i would check. i will be ready for whatever comes and whenever it arrives. really enjoyed the sarcasm too. thanks!

My mom lives right on Fauntleroy between Juneau and Findlay and she hasn’t had many trick or treaters over the past few years even with the porch light on. Not sure why.

JustSarahParticipantGeez, all – ’twas a joke. Sorry if it just seems like common sense that Trick-or-Treating begins at dusk. As for “officially scheduling trick-or-treating for Saturday night or whatever,” well, that sounds a bit Stepford-like; West Seattle isn’t anywhere close to becoming that sanitized and homogenized, thank goodness. :-)

even if it comes on when you get all the way up on the porch…

GenHillOneParticipantNope, Jo :) Guess the other thread ranting about people asking so many Halloween questions was a joke too. I just want to cut folks some slack for honest questions. Bring on the candy!

JustSarahParticipantNo, the other thread was not a joke. I think Halloween’s lots of fun; it was my favorite holiday when I was a kid. That’s why it seriously bums me out to see so much overanalysis and sanitization of what should be a fun, somewhat spontaneous night. Go out sometime after dusk with your kids, stay out until they’re tuckered out and cold (the under-9 set generally is done by 7:30, if memory of my own childhood serves), and knock on doors of houses with porch lights on or Halloween decorations. That’s all there is to it! No need for lists, schedules, and all that crap. I don’t understand the need to plan every last detail of such an easy holiday.

nighthawkParticipantThe city I am from always had official trick or treat times. And I hardly call it an overanalysis and sanitation. It’s been that way for a long, long time, not something new. And yes we had the porch light rule too. It just helped people organize a bit and not show up too early or late at peoples houses.

sam-cParticipantwe did our part to over-think Halloween. we went across town to a neighborhood that did have a costume parade at an ‘official’ time, with trick or treating starting right after. since we skipped over some of the amazingly decorated (scary) houses, we made it back home to ‘unofficially’ greet trick or treaters at our own door til about 8:30 or so.

saneyMemberwe had a great time last night. started at about 6:30, finished at 8. our rule of trick or treating….if the porch light is on and the house is decorated, we stop. otherwise, there are plenty of other houses on the block.

vrbalMemberi moved away for years. i dont have little ones yet but, when i saw all the trick or treaters in west seattle. i felt like i was home. i remember trick or treating in the admiral when i was a boy. im glad west seattle is still safe enough for the kids to get out on halloween.

JulieMemberI’m encouraged that you had a record number–perhaps we can keep the tradition alive! We didn’t have a record (just 28), but as I mentioned in a “rave” post, they were ALL polite–and a few were exceptionally well-mannered. Yay, parents!

KeithMemberOur most memorable trick or treater was the guy who walked into our house party in a full chicken suit, and only after wandering around for a few minutes did he realize he was at the wrong party.

datamuseParticipantSomething like that happened to us last year…some people wandered into the yard, attracted by firespinning, on their way to another party.
They later came back because, they said, ours was cooler.
