LOVE my Trader Joe’s, so very intrigued by this insightful article; “Something fishy at Trader Joe’s?” in Sustainable Industries magazine, http://bit.ly/b7ZQKg

It may also behoove folks (especially folks who eat soy) to read this article in Utne Reader, which also refers to the Cornucopia Institute report that the Sustainable Industries article referenced.

thanks, Diane and TVB. I read the report about soy burgers last week. Being a 5 year breast cancer survivor whose cancer thrives on estrogen, I have limited my soy intake considerably. Now this report makes it even doubly sure that I will be extremely careful as to what soy I do consumer in burger fashion. Frankly, I’ve taken a liking to Quorn products, sold at PCC…they make great meals, great chicken burgers, fool meat eaters, and contain no soy… http://www.quorn.us/About-Us/

though the title refers to fish issues; I was much more intrigued by rest of article, re TJ’s corp process, cloak of secrecy, wealth of owner, size of stores they plan, non-fish issues

Diane, you are correct, they hold all that information very tight to the vest. On the other, we know the Co-Founder and CEO of Whole Paycheck is a complete whack job, so maybe the less we know, the better we will feel. I doubt they have ever gone to those extremes!

LOL.. have any of you ever shopped at an Aldis?

I did in Minnesota and loved them. As an ingredient reader i found many products made with a limited number of actual food ingredients under the Aldi label that were pretty tasty. Aldis was the only food store i missed when we moved back to the Northwest.

I don’t have any illusions about the “green” creds of trader joes. but i do know that the food products i purchase there don’t contain mystery ingredients masked as flavor enhancers.. and that the dog food i buy there would cost me nearly twice as much to order from the source… as would a couple of other branded products i purchase there.

i do buy limited amounts of produce at trader joes when tony’s produce stand is closed… but I support tony’s… concentrating on his local and organic produce… when i can’t make it to the farmer’s market or didn’t grow it myself. I don’t have a good reason other than liking that family a lot.

I don’t think anyone should be under false assumptions about the products they buy or the stores they shop in.. including PCC.

    velvet bulldog..

thanks for the info on soy products. now it makes sense to me that i can eat edame every day but can’t tolerate most soy based products.
