HomerParticipantNow that Trader Joe’s is definitely coming, let’s obsess about Fred Meyer coming closer. Anyone ever thought why Fred Meyer (yes, I’m freakishly obsessed with this store) hasn’t considered moving into the “hole”? They could make it two level like the one in Greenwood. Or, tri-level and have food in it. I keep seeing their ads and can’t believe the price of their organic foods not to mention the variety of things you can get there.
With the spot already dug out and awaiting a company, wonder why Fred Meyer (who doesn’t have a store closer than Burien or Ballard) wouldn’t want to come in…..

MousePotatoMemberI would love a Fred Meyer there but it’s not likely. I believe the parent company for QFC also owns Fred Meyer and I doubt they would add competition for themselves so close….

CMPParticipantExcellent idea Homer! Glad to see I’m not the only person that loves Fred Meyer. FM is all over Portland, I don’t know why they don’t expand here.

GenHillOneParticipantI guess the flip side could be that Kroger would rather have another one of their stores there than someone else’s. Ballard FM wine section is a hidden gem :)

WorldCitizenParticipantJust out of curiosity, why is it that Wal Mart gets labeled as a “small business killer” but Fred Meyer gets a pass? I have no beef with Freddy’s but am admittedly ignorant as to their business practices. Wal Mart’s practices are well publicized and are deserving of my scorn. I see a lot of surface similarities, but would like to know if those similarities run any deeper. Anyone have any good sources for info?

beachdrivegirlParticipantWal-Mart gets more criticism because they treat everyone else around them like sh**. Freddy’s takes care of their employees and therefore doesn’t receive the criticism and also avoids the lawsuits that Wal-Mart faces. Wal-Mart does not add jobs to a market place because they do not allow their employees (most) to work long enough hours to receive benefits or make a living wage. I will go through my books at home to find a book I read in college. It was written in the late 90’s early 2000’s and it was about a journalist who traveled around working minimum wage jobs at Shari’s, Wal-Mart etc and her experiences. Wal-Mart was the only place that she honestly could not afford to live and was treated horrible including not receiving employee discounts even on clothing that she was purchasing for her job at their store. It has been years since I read it, but it was an excellent read and since then I have vowed to boycott Wal-Mart.

DianeParticipantI’ve been wishing for Fred Meyer in the hole for very long time; FM and Trader Joe’s are my favorite places to shop, for too many great reasons to list; it would be perfect here
~
currently have to go all the way up to Ballard for FM & TJ’s, or down to Burien, bit further apart, but can hit both in one trip; it would be heaven to have both on that corner just a mile from my home
~
I worked at FM Ballard over holidays, and was shocked to learn how HUGE they are, many many many stores all owned by Kroger; so yeh, good point about QFC, also owned by Kroger, within a block; darn
~
btw, the Greenwood FM project may not happen now, according to PSBJ, so wish they would shift plans to WS

JustSarahParticipantBDG is talking about “Nickel and Dimed” by Barbara Ehrenreich, and it is definitely worth a read (as are her other books, “Bait and Switch” and “Bright Sided”).

JiggersMemberI would have loved to see A Cinema take over that hole. There is enough room for several movie theaters there, but I think the depth that the “Hole” re-zoned it for, I would almost certainly think it scared away some potential businesses that otherwise may have moved there. That’s a lot of earth they dug into.

HMC RichParticipantI don’t know but I looked across the “hole” the other day and saw the West Seattle Bowling Alley sign that says BOWL.
I thought renaming it the Bowl Hole might work.
REI should buy it. They could make climbing walls or Bungee Jumps.
