AnonymousInactiveWhy would someone in a pea coat crouch under a tree with a cup of coffee just before dark in Lincoln Park?
Recently, while walking my German Shepherd in the park, we were startled by movement from under the canopy of an approximately 20-foot tall fir tree. My dog immediately alerted and growled at the bushman, who tried to stand up and mumbled something like “oh no…”. We proceeded up the trail and left Mr. Baggins to his drink.
Another time, we were carving our way through the bush when two men emerged from under a tree and were immediately startled by my dog who I hadn’t realized moved quickly in their direction. One of the bushmen raised his hands as if to surrender while the other bushman said “wow he’s neat looking”. I said “thank you” and we continued on our walk.
One final observation was during the early morning hours before 8:00AM, but this was from afar. We had visual of an out of place looking Caucasian male who changed direction as if to avoid us. The bushman moved towards one of the wooded patches in the middle of the park to the west of the playfields, wherein he released a vociferous howl then fled on foot eastbound towards Fauntleroy.
I try to stay off the main trails because my dog is aggressive when on leash and he frequently scares people.
Is this near tree dwelling behavior common in Lincoln Park? Am I the only one running into these people and feeling like something’s out of place?

melissaParticipantThere’s a not inconsiderable number of homeless people who live in Lincoln Park. I used to have a hound dog who my husband insisted would someday listen to the voice of reason ( never, not never, did she, but that’s another story). When he let her off leash, figuring that she’d listen to him THIS time, she’d not infrequently find someone’s food stash and eat it. We’ve had some conversations with some of the folks who live there. Obviously, that’s not their first choice, but it’s better for many than a crowded shelter or prostletyzing mission.

AnonymousInactiveI wouldn’t mind living in the park if they gave me a pea coat and a Starbucks every day, plus as you stated melinda, it is probably not their first choice.
What a wondeful sunset though in the summer time….
Makes me think of past summers, and summers to come….
Sleeping under a tree….with the stars….
Then, WHAM! German Shepherd time! “what’s going on here who are you where did you come from are you a threat you’re not a threat ok move on patrol patrol”. Man, I love this breed!

JoBParticipantyou’d love my shibas… they do the same thing but like energizer bunnies… as my brother put it.. you sure have energetic dogs.
i too walk off the main trails and often see people emerging from and disappearing under trees.

CallMeAlMemberI dunno Luigilinguini…these sound like shady characters. Would be a shame to have to avoid Lincoln Park because of these yahoos.

nuniMemberMaybe there is some “activity” going on between these men. I’ve heard of some other parks and such that have had problems with this.

trensuelaMemberSome men are just looking for attention and what a good way to pursue it. I for one would never even think about wearing pea coat while drinking coffee let alone while crouching under a tree. Some men are just better attention getters I guess.

no need to worry.. the busmen don’t need chairs.. they’ll just loiter in the bushes until food is served… and scurry back undercover…

bazooMemberOne thing to consider is that roughly 50% of those that are homeless have serious mental illnesses. Unfortunately our mental health system is pretty nonexistent in this state as well as most of the country…
And one usually doesn’t need to worry about being safe around these dear folks because the general population commits far more crimes than the homeless mentally ill, percentage wise. What they need is space and respect – just like anyone else.

AlkiholixParticipantWith a bit of luck, his life was ruined forever. Always thinking that just behind some tree in all of his favorite parks, men with pea coats and cups of coffee are getting incredible kicks from things he’ll never know.
