i went to las vegas for the first time in december and stayed at the palazzo. it was so beautiful! i was there with my friend during her engineering conference. i spent half the day by myself so i leisurely stayed in the hotel and walked around. i enjoyed the bathroom and its huge tub tv. our suite had two flat screen tvs. one in the living room area and one in the sleeping area. it was so nice! ugh, i could live there. it is connected to the venetian so you can easily walk over for shopping over there and then pop on over for the gondola ride or a visit to madame taussaud’s wax museum. i walked to caesar’s forum shopping center and they have a free tour of their aquarium behind the scenes. the lady there used to live in tacoma.

    shows:

    1.La Cage: women impersonators..very good

    2. Cirque du Soleil Mystere: very good acrobatics, story kind of strange but don’t think too hard about it.

    3. Wayne Brady: what a talent! sings, dances, and so funny. saw him on a sunday and bought cheapest seats but since there weren’t that many people they allowed cheap seat people move up but not to front row but that’s ok.

we missed out on ‘thunder down under’. that’s the one thing i wasn’t able to do. oh and i by passed the buffets. thank goodness for this thread! i will be sure to hit those next time.

Thanks for mentioning Wayne Brady – I was just looking at his website and trying to find a way to get down there soon to see him live. He is just so damn talented!!! Anyone who has ever seen him on Whose Line Is It Anyway knows what I’m talking about. Thanks for the tip on cheap tix – I am now really jonesin’ for a trip to Vegas!

Excalibur has a great pool but the hotel carpet is horrible and will give you the spins if ypu have been drinking. There is some club there that has different rooms all going at once. It is a dance club and it was really fun. There was a rock room and a trance room, and a disco room. Anybody know the name of it? I think it was near the strip but not on it, down on the Excalibur side. Not sure about that though.

    Fun!

    I’ve stayed at:

    Sommerset

    Stardust

    Excaliber

    Hawthorne Suites

    Paris

    Tropicana

    Barbary Coast

    New York, New York

    Luxor

    Bellagio

    Mandalay Bay

    I’ve seen

    Mystere

    Sigfried & Roy

    O

    Jubilee

    Avenue Q

Now of course much of these goodies are gone, gone, gone. I would suggest Mandalay Bay or Bellagio for pool, with Tropicana also being a good and much more affordable option. I would recommend a Cirque Du Soleil show especially if you haven’t seen one.

    good luck!

I think the Flamingo has an excellent pool, is conveniently located and the bonus is that you don’t have to cut through the casino to get from your room to the pool and restaurants like at many of the hotels. MGM Grand is nice but a long walk through the casino and shops to get to the pool. The pool was closed when I stayed at Mandalay Bay, and it is at the very end of the strip so not as convenient. Planet Hollywood looks really nice but haven’t stayed there. They did a good job on the change from Aladdin. We’ve used the Costco packages through America West (now US Airways) and have never had any problems.

Now I want to go to Vegas! I’ve stayed at Treasure Island (great location, good pool and great customer service), Bally’s (EXCELLENT location, good rates, must stay in the updated tower, servicable pool), and Mandalay Bay (nice hotel, too many children at the pool, bring your walking shoes because the location is far, far away). Husband stayed at Palazzo in Sept or Oct 2008 during a work conference and LOVED it. He travels a bit for work and said it was one of the nicest places he has stayed.

Oh, one thing that drove me crazy about Vegas is the cover charges to go to the clubs. I’m thrifty and refused to pay $20+ to get in to those places. Maybe the covers aren’t as high now, but just wanted to warn you.

    HAVE FUN!

yeah I get you on the cover charges. Way I see it is that I am paying dirt cheap prices on the rooms… rooms that would cost me hundreds in any other city, a cover charge, I can handle it.

example: just got 2 free nights at Encore because I spend $50 once last year at a slot. can’t beat that anywhere, AND I came home with $1200 after my expenses… vegas, can’t beat it.

If you can swing the cover, you must visit XS or Tryst at Wynn/Encore. No other club like it.

I posted this on a travel board, thought I would share here. Some pics (mostly our room) from our last trip.

We always stay at the Tropicana baby! I think my dad stays there for free now. I used to have family in Vegas, and have many memories of being thrown onto the “kid levels” of casinos for hours at a time. Then my sister and I got bored and rode elevators up and down. I like the Luxor’s elevator the best. And I’m a HUGE fan of running up the down escalators in many of these fine establishments as well.

Now that I’m super duper mature at 24 years old, I’d recommend OLD VEGAS because they let you play with real dirty money, specifically nickels. Yep, no sterile cards… There are still nickel machines in Vegas!!!

I love the GOLDEN NUGGET. The Old Strip is the only way to go. All the new strip hotels are just a quick cab ride away if you want to check them out. The new strip is way to crowded to enjoy anymore. On the old strip, the sky is a light show with live bands all night and the place is crazy fun. The hotel is beautiful and has a shark tank with a water slide running through it. The new strip is better during the day. If you’re not planing on going out side much however, try Caesars Palace.
