Does anyone have a recommendation for a great place to stay in Las Vegas? Looking for not too expensive with POOL since it will be pretty hot the first week of June when we go. Any suggestions?

The last time we were there was about 3 years ago – we stayed at the MGM Grand in the West Wing and we LOVED it!! It’s at the end of the strip, but the monorail has a station right there. You can get some pretty good deals these days… have fun!!

I just got back from Vegas a few weeks ago. We stayed at the Paris. In the past I have stayed at the Luxor. I thought they had a nice pool. You can get great deals in Vegas right now due to the economy.

In September my husband and I stayed at the Bellagio. Very enjoyable. Not the young atmosphere you’d expect from a place like Hard Rock, and not a kiddie haven. The pool was grand and subdued. The room and LARGE bathroom were great too. I’ve stayed at many places on the strip and the Bellagio is one of the tops. Also enjoyed Caesars.

I stayed at the Luxor last month and booked through Costco travel. NEVER AGAIN on either account. The hotel put us on a smoking floor without even asking and when we went to try to change it, they didn’t have any other rooms available. We got a package deal that was supposed to have KA tickets included. The hotel gave us a confirmation # but when we went to get tix they said we didn’t have them. The hotel pointed the finger at Costco and Costco pointed it back at Luxor. My first trip to Vegas was stained by the whole experience. Customer service on both sides of the equation was horrible and I’m still trying to get a resolution out of it.

I stayed at the Flamingo a few years ago – wow – about 8 year now that I think about it. A lot of pink and turquoise as far as decor, but they had three pools. The room rate was reasonable.

My husband and I like to stay at Bally’s when we go. We ALWAYS ask for a room in the North Tower since those rooms have been renovated and it’s a huge difference between the South Tower rooms. The hotel itself isn’t huge so you won’t get lost. It isn’t a themed hotel but it is literally in the heart of the strip (you can’t beat the location for the money) and is connected to Paris via an indoor walkway with shops and restaurants. Bellagio is right across the street and they have an awesome buffet. Basically if you don’t care about the themes you will really like Bally’s. When we had to stay an extra night because there were hurricane force winds as we were trying to depart on our trip back home we went back to Bally’s and they let us stay in one of their honeymoon suites for $120 (and we weren’t even on our honeymoon!). If that doesn’t make someone want to come back I don’t know what will!

There are some HUGE deals available there right now. I just read in the latest issue of New York Magazine today that 700 square foot suites at Steve Wynn’s new Encore hotel are available for $179 a night.

We have stayed at the Wynn, The Venetian, and MGM Grand. All were great hotels and conveniently located. Have fun and good luck!

If you don’t mind being off the Strip, the Tuscany Suites is an inexpensive choice. It’s a fairly new place (less than 10 years old) located next to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Nice, big rooms. Have a good time!

I have been to Vegas twice, the first time we stayed at the Luxor and the second trip (October 2008) we stayed at the Golden Nugget on the old strip. Our favorite was the Golden Nugget. Beautiful rooms, especially the renovated rooms. and the pool is gorgeous!!! They have a really cool water slide that goes through a shark tank in the middle of the pool. My husband and I really like the old strip atmosphere and it is cheaper to gamble down there. There is a shuttle bus that takes you from the old strip to the new strip, kinda slow because of all the stops but its better than paying the high price of cab fare. I think a day pass costs about $5, and its a double decker type bus, so that is pretty fun.

We enjoyed the Luxor, but found that we didnt really spend a lot of time actually in our hotel. We preferred to go around sightseeing at other hotels and the strip. So we ended up paying for a huge beautiful room that really was just a crash pad that we barely used. Golden Nugget is recently updated and I believe they are adding another tower. Their customer service is excellent, buffet is yummy and not too overpriced. Good for breakfast. Loved the blintzes. ;)

We used the Vegas.com website for both trips and got pretty good deals with them, I shopped around quite a bit. Have fun planning your trip! (I really want to go now too)

    I’ve stayed at:

    Excalibur

    Bellagio

    MGM Grand

    Caesars

    Golden Nugget

    Gold Coast

    Paris

    Aladdin (now Planet Hollywood)

For overall ambiance Bellagio is #1 for me, especially with the deals right now.

MGM Grand is currently practically giving away rooms and that would be my 2nd choice.

FYI: Caesars pool area is closed for renovation through Spring of 2009.

In addition to all of the casinos and attractions on the Strip, don’t forget that Las Vegas provides easy access to the natural beauty of the Mohave Desert. A 25 minute drive out to Red Rock Canyon is well worth the time. There are a number of great hiking trails and opportunities for rock scrambling and climbing. There also is an auto loop for the less intrepid or hungover.

It is one of my favorite things to do in Vegas. Breathtakingly beautiful. Lots of wild burros and birds too. Bring sunscreen and extra water!

I’ll second Red Rock. Take a bag of carrots as there are wild burros milling about. Also there’s Hoover Dam which is pretty amazing and that’s a pretty easy 20-30 minute drive from The Strip.

My parents told me stories of when they stayed in Vegas in the early 1950s. There were tour buses to go out and see the atomic bomb blasts out in the desert.

    They never went.

Had they gone it would have explained a lot.

When we go to LV, we take a side trip to the Amargosa Opera House — amazing story and amazing place. We heard about it on PBS (where else)? Even if you never go there, read the story of Marta Becket. She’s an amazing dame! :-) Even though the calendar only goes through May, she often performs in the summer — she never leaves.

    Stayed at:

    Mandalay Bay

    Luxor

    Excalibur

    New York, New York

    Stratosphere

    Mirage

My favorite hotel by far is the Mirage. Their hotel beds are AWESOME, and if you’d like one for your own, they sell them in the gift shop. Their pool is AMAZING!! Like everyone is saying, all the hotels have great deals. The best deal is always Stratosphere since it’s at the end of the strip ($29.95 usually). Nice rooms, but if you plan on leaving and walking, it’s a hair sketchy.

I’ve been to Vegas 10 times in my short life, and while my story won’t affect you much, hopefully it will help someone else reading this board:

    Stay are the Tropicana.

Yes, what you have heard is right: The Tropicana is very boring. It’s frills are nill and it is old as dirt.

HOWEVER! It is in (in my opinion) the BEST corner of the Strip, surrounded on all sides by the MGM Grand, New York, New York, Luxor, Mandelay Bay and within walking distance of anything else you’d want.

    AND IT IS SO CHEAP!

In college, whenever we’d have a three-day weekend, a bunch of buddies and I would load up a car and burn through the desert all night. The first few times we went ‘cheap’ and stayed at the Travelodge on the Strip. But the Tropicana costs LESS than the Travelodge did!

So anyway, stay there. Save money on the room and use it for spending all over the town.

I’ve been going to Las Vegas about twice a year for the last 4 years, for work. Stayed lots a places there, and had meetings in every hotel, each with it’s own pros and cons. For your consideration, ranked in order of where I’d actually want to stay:

    1. THEhotel at Mandalay Bay – similar a W, at the end of the strip, nicer because of it.

    2. Wynn – great bathrooms, and service level.

    3. Bellagio – nothing great, everything very well, so the hotel is never becomes a worry.

    4. Venetian – theme gets old fast, but it’s very Vegas, at least to me, and decent rooms and a good drunk walk location from everything.

    5. Paris – What the Venetian will be in a few years. Respectable and affordable. Good views of other hotels, also a nice location.

    6. Balleys – cheap, but not gross. You must ask for the North tower, or you’ll be in rooms from the 70’s.

Have fun! Yes, like others said, detox and go to Red Rock for nature, and if you get tired of the strip, head over to Green Valley Ranch for a locals scene and some good shopping.

    Notable Vegas pools I’ve visited:

Mandalay Bay – HUGE! Lazy river to float around in, giant wave pool to bodysurf/splash around. These waterpark type attractions draw more younger/smaller kids than you’ll find at other hotels, but for an extra charge you can hide in their 21+ ‘beach club’ and they have a ton of cabanas for rent. Sometimes they have concerts outside that you watch from the pool and the sandy shore– I saw the B-52’s there and when they played “Rock Lobster” the entire audience got into a huge splash fight. Fun!

Hard Rock – MTV Spring Break, live and in person. People just sort of stand in the pool with drinks, like a bar that’s half-full of water. It’s really sceney and cruisey. Can be fun with the right crowd; if you’re not laughing with them you can always laugh at them.

Mirage – This is one of my favorites. There’s a big waterfall and a huge open pool, lots of tropical foilage and a couple of silly waterslides. The location of the Mirage is prime, right in the middle of everything.

Caesar’s Palace – As noted above, part of the pool area is under renovation, but some of it is open and it looks pretty cool, not your average swimmin’ hole. They usually have a 21+ topless area, if you’re into that. Right next door to the Mirage, so a great location.

Flamingo – a long, meandering series of little pools dotted with palm trees. It’s pretty but doesn’t get very deep anywhere, more for wading around.

I used to go to Las Vegas every January for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) where all of the manufacturers would have their cutting edge technology and new models for the coming season on display at the Convention Center. One year in particular they were simultaneously having the Adult Entertainment convention at the pavilion opposite CES. At some point I got handed a coupon for an offer to “Double my RAM” and I wasn’t sure which convention it applied to.

(Sorry. I know that’s not about Las Vegas hotels but I couldn’t resist) ;-)

Awesome – thanks for the great suggestions everyone. How about shows – anyone seen any good one’s? Recommendations for getting a bargain on a show? One very cool thing we’ve done a few times while in the vegas area is tour the Shelby Mustang Museum – awesome cars and fun to learn about the history of Shelby and Mustang cars. Its near the Las Vegas Speedway and it’s FREE too!
