The hand-licking-head-petter? She cracks me up!

Palin needed to get her bangs out of her eyes. They moved every time she blinked… my mother would have had a fit and attacked me with a bobby pin. “…the hell are you thinking! Get that out of your eyes!!!”

Palin is an embarrassment for all of the reasons already mentioned.

Biden was generous tonight. There were several times when he could have jumped all over her – O’Biden and General “McClellen” are a couple.

She did a good job with the 2-minute speeches (to borrow from JT) tonight. We can’t expect her to have diplomacy camp before each important meeting though. She can’t just deliver mini-speeches to the diplomats, and god forbid she winks at one of them while saying you betcha. She hasn’t given me any reason to believe she wouldn’t.

She is a caricature at best.

Biden could have jumped on her lie for her original support on the Bridge to Nowhere or the fact that she is currently under investigation for abuse of power, or she was blessed by a witch hunter, or believes the Earth is 5,000 years old.

I won’t touch the Enquirer story yet, but there are signed affidavits on that story, and generally when there is a clear sign of smoke, there is a fire.

Palin has a whole house of closet and skeletons, and in the coming months I’m sure they will be well known.

Biden played it smart and like Obama stayed above the fray.

I admit that I watched the debate from a teacher’s perspective tonight, focusing mainly on debate style, body language, and supporting evidence/anecdotes for their statements.

I think Biden dominated overall in those categories, especially in the first and third categories. I sometimes was peeved at his constant smiling at Palin when she was trying to jab he or McCain – I think it was a confusing response because it could be taken as (1) “Ah, you got me there” type of smile or it could be (2)”You stupid kitten” type of smile. I thought he should have been more stern in those moments.

I also noticed a couple of gaff’s from Biden – the most notable one being that Article I of the Constitution defines the powers of the VP because it is the Article of the Executive Branch – wrong!!! Article II delineates the structure and powers of the Executive Branch; Article I is the Legislative Branch.

Palin’s voice was worse than nails on a blackboard. And her debate style was very poor – choice of words, inflection, repetitiveness and redundancies. Didn’t she say at the end that we needed “participation to participate”? She had a much better delivery on those items in which she was coached – it was obvious that she was WAY out of her league on topics that she was not prepped for.

I think one of the most telling moments of the entire debate was Palin’s answer to the question of what she will be working on if she is VP. She stated that she had already discussed this with McCain and that he was going to put her charge of (1)Energy policy and independence, (2) government reform and (3) special needs children’s issues. Ok – so when has anyone ever heard of a VP in history making major policies or pushing their own legislation through Congress? That tells me that McCain is not serious about energy reform, because if he was, he would not give that task to the VP’s office – it would be his “baby” so to speak. The same goes for government reform – so we see where McCain is going – he’s really not going to work on those issues much at all; he’s pawned them off already to the VP.

Biden’s line tonight was priceless: “Dick Cheney is the most dangerous VP in U.S. History”. Say it ain’t so, Joe!

I’m looking forward to my students’ reaction next week when we watch the debate.

I have lurked for on the political forums here for sometime and I my opinion was that they both at times made no sense and held back too much. I would rather have niether ticket in the white house since niether really appeal to me nor my beliefs for this country. But I have to say reading this forums for useful information has been leaving me with an awful taste in my mouth with fork tongued statements and attacking not just the credentials of a canidate but the way they look. It makes no case for the candiate that you are backing when it’s spoken with such venom. I thought for such an all-inclusive group it would be more even handed. My opinion.

Bingo, Wes. That’s why my new rule of thumb is to state my opinion and move on. It’s not worth attempting to debate with people that think that they’re open minded, yet are the first ones to call people names and act in a discriminating way.

The rule of the left is “We’re accepting and tolerant of everyone that agrees with us, otherwise you must hate us”.

I have not ever pretended to be open minded when the fate of my country is at stake.

There’s no room for prevarication when the United States of America is perceived as a bully aggressor nation, the laughing stock of the world. Whatever international good will we had after 9/11 is in the toilet.

There’s no time to smooth over hurt feelings when McCain has made a mockery of the office of vice president. But of course we all know he doesn’t like government anyway, in spite of the fact that he’s made a career of it, feeding at the public trough.

No, I’m not tolerant at all of the assault on the middle class, the mushrooming of poverty, homelessness and hunger, the slide into third-world status of what was once the greatest country on earth. What the hell is wrong with people who think it’s ridiculous to perceive paying taxes as patriotic? It’s rampant greed that got us where we are and I don’t have any patience with people who don’t understand the principle that the whole is greater than its parts.

I am not open minded about those who would go to church on Sunday and pray to god, but cheat on their taxes, or those who would lie, or those without ethics. There’s a cancer in this country, and yes, it makes me mad as hell.

And one more thing: Palin as president? We would be SITTING DUCKS for a terrorist attack of unprecedented magnitude. You want to be open minded about that scenario, go ahead. Not me.

Biden was Palin’s lapdog tonight. I’m just like her, I understand the middle class also. I know what it’s like just like her. I’m from PA folks, hey overhear.

Hey Joe my dad raised me and my sister in PA. The only difference it was minus the $200 k a year salary.

What an shame that a senior Senator can barely hold his own versus a newcomer like Palin.

I’m with you on this ace – running our country into the ground is not up for debate with me anymore. We have to stop the bleeding and try not to blow anything up while we’re at it.

I agree with the fact that Palin didnt make as big of a fool as she could have yesterday. However, she did not answer any question that was directed at her. I think she must have confused what a debate and a speech are.Or she managed to misout on both classes while she was busy changing schools.

I agree with BDG – and it is unfair to call this a “debate” – Biden debated. Palin read a speech. She showed disrespect for the whole process in doing so.

I agree JenV. Joe did great at actually answering the questions presented to him. Staying on task would be a rather important skill of a VP…no? Sadly, this was just one really long press conference. I hope there are more unscripted one-on-one interviews to see how individuals can really handle themselves.

Also, why is no one talking about her comment “McCain knows how to win a war”. Does she think we “won” Vietnam?

    FACT-CHECK: Obama’s 94 votes for higher taxes:

–23 were against proposed tax cuts.

    — 7 were “for measures that would have lowered taxes for many, while raising them on a relative few, either corporations or affluent individuals.”

    – 11 were to increase taxes on people making more than $1 million a year, to help fund programs such as Head Start, school nutrition, or veterans’ health care.

    – 53 were votes on budget resolutions or amendments that “could not have resulted by themselves in raising taxes,” though many “were clear statements of approval for increased taxes”

    – The total also includes multiple votes on the same measures. Annenberg says a close look at the record reveals that Obama has “voted consistently to restore higher tax rates on upper income taxpayers but not on middle- or low-income workers.”

RainyDay- this actually wasn’t anything like a press conference, which Sarah Palin still has not held one of. There were no follow up questions, and the candidate stated early, and stuck to the plan of not answering the questions asked but instead- speaking straight to the people…

It was a campaign speech, not a give and take exchange of ideas, or any sort of a grilling on specific points and issues.

She was equally effective w/ Couric except for the parts when she was asked to site specific examples, or to answer a follow up question outside of the scripted talking point.

So Palin won (according to her supporters) because she exhibits charm and folksiness, while not committing huge “blunders”. And she’s easy on the eyes.

And Biden won (according to his supporters) because he gave more substantive answers, was able to draw on years of experience and didn’t denigrate or patronize Sarah.

Yay. This debate seemed kind of pointless as a “debate”. Other than getting an opportunity to see the candidate’s poise, confidence, personality, fashion-sense (or lack there of) etc, there seldom is any substance. i wish they would call it something else. It’s more like a “candidate showcase”.

With that said, i was surprised that it didn’t devolve into PANDERFEST 2008! Surprises:

Sarah Palin comes out on the side of rights for gay couples in line with marriage.

Sarah Palin mentions that as a nation we should “conserve” energy.

Sarah Palin saying that americans need to say “never again” to predatory lending and become fiscally responsible.

None of those concepts seems in line with the present republican party (post 1980). when the going gets tough, the tough are supposed to go shopping. for a large american SUV.

Hopefully, this time around, all those who voted by deciding “which candidate would be more fun to have a beer with” will see the error of their ways. Or again, we will get what we deserve.

I do wish joe would have asked Sarah, as an energy expert, how fossil fuels form, given that the planet is only 8000 years old.

If Biden had tried any of that “gee whiz” and “golly gee” and “gosh darn” behavior, would we still respect him in the morning?

I love that as of right now, even the Faux news insta-poll shows 57% for Biden and 43% for Palin. And I can’t wait for Tina Fey’s take on the whole thing. :)

I am fully with you acemotel, from this point forward I am not going to act like I’m open minded when my country’s safety is at stake. This debate and this election have been so polarizing that anyone with a strong opinion hasn’t made a difference since last February.

As for the mean spirited comments – I don’t see any direct attacks on here honestly. And none that are making character judgments or unfair assessments… yet. Unfortunately for some these political discussions are hard to keep in a kind realm because people disagree so vehemently and for good reasons. There is a lot at stake here and I’m sorry for those that expected it to stay along the same lines as a discussion about how great West Seattle restaurants are (even THOSE get a little heated these days.) Tensions are high, but this is still important and I encourage everyone to stick around with that in mind.

I’m not here to “convert” people. It’s impossible and it’s disrespectful to think I can do so. What I am here to do is try to understand why people think that way that they do on the other side. Some people have been able to really open up and show me what they think and I completely respect and enjoy that. Very valid points… except when backed up with ignorant statements. I’ve seen more than my fair share of them on here on both sides and it’s infuriating.
