ZenguyParticipantI have kind of a love/hate relationship with the Oscars, but a love only relationship with movies. The Oscars are coming up next month and I was wondering what great movies people have seen this last year, who put out the great performances, etc?
Slumdog Millionare, is a terrific movie if you can deal with seeing torture. I hate violence and totally thought it was worth it.
Gran Torino is a terrific little movie, Clint Eastwood plays a terrific curmudgeon (I could have done with less growling) this movie also has some tough scenes and bring a hankie…my movie buddy and I both cried.
Doubt put out some of the best performances, Meryl Streep, Seymour Hoffman and Viola Davis were all great, the movie was good, but could have been better.

Rourke’s performance in The Wrestler.

ZenguyParticipantI am not a fan of Mickey Rourke, glad he found a way back but do not think he is much of an actor.

villagegreenMemberBarfly? “To all my friends!” Guess that was the start of his rapid decline, but what a way to go out. Glad he’s found his way back and look forward to seeing him in The Wrestler.
I hardly every get to see movies in the theater anymore as I have a one year old. However, I just saw the documentary ‘Man on Wire’ on DVD and thought it was excellent. Frenchman tightrope walker smuggles his way into the World Trade Center and walks between towers. Sounds weird, but there are scenes so beautiful it made me cry.

addParticipantMan on Wire was really interesting – weirdly engaging. I found it a little slow but thoroughly enjoyed the story and it made me want to find out more about that whole incident!

JennieMemberAbsolutely loved Slumdog Millionaire. The Wrestler was really great. Unbelievably, I thought Mickey Rourke’s performance was better than Sean Penn in Milk. Still need to see Benjamin Button.

ZenguyParticipantEverytime I see an ad for the Wrestler I think of the Life and Times of Dog the Bounty Hunter…lol. I hear Benjamin Buttons is a snooze-fest and a critic friend is amazed it was nominated.

DMParticipantYep, Slumdog was one bit fat great movie!
And Sean Penn in “Milk”: I believe he was channeling Harvey Milk…But I haven’t yet seen an acting job that made me KNOW that they would win (like Forrest Whitaker (sp?)in “Last King of Scotland” or the actress who played Edith Piaf).
The documentary about Antarctica by Werner Hertzog was astonishing.
I watched “The Fall” twice in the big theater. Did anyone besides me see it? Major non-high tech eye candy, and a couple of layered and captivating stories that drive it. I loved it but I’m sure it will only be up for art direction if anything.

DMParticipantI posted that before I’d realized the Oscar nominations are already out. OOPS! I’ve been working a lot AND I just finished jury duty so I’m copping to being a little brain crispy.
Never the less, I’m a little surprised “The Fall” wasn’t nominated for art direction. The director intentionally made an exotically visual film with out using any digital tricks. Then again, I think I am the only one who watched it.

bunnypugMemberOh! I love movies and the Oscars. My favorite this year is Milk. I have loved, loved ,loved the documentary, Times of Harvey Milk, for many years, so I had pretty high expectations but it is really great, as a film and as a call to action. I also liked Frost/Nixon. In the actor category Rourke’s performance is great, but I’m pulling for Penn.

saneyMemberwe saw Benjamin Button last weekend. it was ok. WAY too much like Forrest Gump. Cate Blanchett was fantastic. Brad Pitt did not deserve a nomination, the special effects did.

BonnieParticipantI saw both Slumbdog Millionaire and Grand Torino and thought both were excellent. Clint Eastwood reminded me so much of my husband’s late grandfather. Very cranky.

RainyDay1235MemberI loved “The Fall” as well. A shame it did not get nominated for anything…the little girl was an incredibly natural actress.
I thought Curious Case was quirky but too long. I actually liked The Changeling better.
Anyone see the French comedy OSS117? Hysterical.
I have many more from the list to see (waiting for Netflix) but as of right now I still think the best movie of the year was Wall-E. The mix of animation and social commentary was sublime.

Cali101MemberRevolutionary Road was very well acted. I thought Kate Winslett should have gotten an Oscar nod for her role in that film. I didn’t love the film itself though. Too heavy.
I do still need to see The Reader and Milk. LOVED Rachel Getting Married and Slumdog! Did not love Benjamin Button too long, but I agree amazing special effects, but nothing else was extraordinary there.
