jellyfishMemberThe Seattle Public Schools enrollment website lists tiebreakers for ALL option schools this year as: 1) siblings and 2) lottery. Only TOPS includes distance in their calculations. No mention of geographical zone:
https://www.seattleschools.org/area/eso/tiebreakers.html
However, the New Student Assignment Plan for 2010 lists the tiebreakers as: 1) siblings, 2) geographical zone, and 3) lottery:

Which is correct?
I called SPS enrollment, and they didn’t know the answer. They read off the info provided on the enrollment website. Obviously it’s just a call center.
Who knows the answer?
And if geographical zones are irrelevant for choice this year, does this mean that all Seattle children have an equal chance of getting into Pathfinder, Thornton Creek, SP#1, etc…?
Pathfinder is our #1 choice this year, but I’m unsure if the lack of geographical zone into the equation will decrease our chances, since there will be lots of competition from within and outside of West Seattle. Does anyone know what kind of competition exists to get into Pathfinder?
Geographical zone seems to apply to only busing (ie. we are guaranteed busing if our child gets into our geographical option school). Is this true?

luckymom30ParticipantI would send an email or call Tracy Libros Enrollment Manager her email address and phone number are listed on the Seattle Public Schools website. She has been most helpful to us many times.

yumpearsParticipantYou can also visit http://saveseattleschools.blogspot.com/2010/01/odd-consequences-of-nsap.html There are quite a few very sharp people who have discussed the transition plan a lot.

PDieterParticipantthe plan to use geography as a tie breaker has been postponed until next school enrollment (2011). (this subject is important to me and I am up on the details)

berthaParticipantHow can the district use geography as a tiebreaker for an options school? Aren’t schools like Pathfinder, Center School, Nova, etc supposed to be available to the whole district?

WSACMemberBertha, we also have Pathfinder as our first choice. My read of the SPS literature is that Pathfinder is an option school for the West Seattle clusters so that there will be preference to those living in the West Seattle area as defined by their reference maps after siblings. If SPS enrollment is confused about Pathfinder’s enrollment then maybe I am not understanding things correctly. We are in the Lafayette area so it’s my understanding that if our son doesn’t get into Pathfinder, he will be assigned to Lafayette although I’m really hoping that doesn’t happen! I guess we’ll find out more in March.

addParticipantI’m sure most people have received their assignment info from SPS by now, but I just wanted to chime in that the information in the mailing very clearly states that the tie-breakers for Option Schools (for 2010-11) are 1) Sibling and 2) Lottery. No service area/geography at all.

jellyfishMemberOK, enrollment services finally posted the transition plan, which clearly states that geographical zone is not a factor for option school enrollment this year:
