WednesdayMemberDoes anyone know what that sound was last night sometime before midnight? It went on way too long to be a helicopter I think and never saw one, nothing on the blog. Could’ve been a ship going by but it never seemed to pass, and seemed almost like it was going in circles. Heard lots of train noise too, but this seemed different.

jissyParticipantI heard it, too and it was way different from the infamous “hum”. I started hearing it around 10:30 and went out/opened all my doors to try and hear where it was coming from or what it might be. It didn’t get any louder though out any door.
Don’t know where you are, Wednesday but I’m near Lowman Beach.

WSBKeymasterWe heard a couple reports about this but no incidents linked to it. I think I might put it on the home page just to cast a wider net because from the description I heard, I have no idea. Just thought the “hum” might have appeared in magnified form. – TR

babalouParticipantwhat is causing “the hum”?
February 3, 2012 at 7:46 pm #747206
JimmyGMemberThis wasn’t The Hum, this was much louder.
Got home from work around midnight and heard it steady until 4:30 this morning. It might have gone on past then, but that’s when I finally went to bed.

babalouParticipantI went back to past discussions of “the hum” on this forum. There was a lot of debate, origin theories, etc. Has there been a consensus (or best hypothesis) on the cause of the infamous west seattle hum?

AlParticipantIt was LOUD last night. Definitely a machine hum of some sort. – near High Point.

WSBKeymasterI’ve never heard a hum consensus. It’s even been suggested that the rush of the sewer tunnel beneath the north half of the peninsula could be it, sometimes. Wish I had any hint about this noise the other night. It’s fairly easy to narrow down aircraft, but anything else … Sound does carry differently depending on weather conditions. Some nights we hear the Harbor Island train whistles all the way down by Lincoln Park as if they were a block away. – TR

JanSParticipantwas there any late night construction going on anywhere on the peninsula? Sometimes the sound of construction machinery will carry. I live by Admiral Safeway…have never heard the “hum”..but I hear the trains on a regular basis. It’s soothing to me in the middle of the night…reminds me of visiting my grandparents as a child. They lived in the coal regions of PA, and had trains going by all day long, just a block or two away…

PK22MemberIt’s very possible that the ” hum ” many people are referring to could be low level resonance ( I. E. ) “ULF” Ultra Low Frequency underneath our feet. The earth is always in motion, whether it be the sky, the water or the land, and in certain parts of the world ESPECIALLY seismic regions it is possible for a very low sound to occur that many people can hear. Do I personally believe this ” hum ” is the result of a ULF? It’s possible but w/o any sort of actual investigation or scientific explanation all we can do is speculate. However during the Japan quake back in March of last year, seismographs actually recorded a ULF that began 4 days before the 9.0 quake and ended just 32 mins before the quake hit, now if you think about it for a second….. It could have been a ULF considering that JUST TODAY there were 3 quakes of the BC, WA and ORE. coasts ( BC 5.7 ) Wa ( 4.3 )Ore. ( 3.7 ) and I was able to find info showing what appears to be a ULF registering on a seismograph south of Long Beach @ 3:34 am Friday morning….. Hmmmmmmmm

GinaParticipantWhat does the night work on Spokane St sound like? Could that noise carry?
February 5, 2012 at 12:19 am #747214
CandrewB1ParticipantPersonally I think the hum originates from Jorgensen Forge down by Boeing Field. I know they do their actual forging (or at least used to) at night and it can be a loud process.

WSBKeymasterWe heard this for a bit from east lawn of Hiawatha around 10:30 today. Sounded quite distinctly like the train yard … with sound just carrying unusually … Many theories, though! – TR

AlexParticipantIt’s from the wind blowing over the hole at Fauntleroy and Alaska.

me on 28th Ave SWParticipantI have been hearing a distinct noise tonight for at least 30 minutes now. It sounds like a helicopter, but I cannot see one. I have never noticed this sound before. I am at Thistle and 28th.
February 6, 2012 at 6:19 am #747218
fc43ParticipantWe hear the noise whenever the night is cold and clear – just like it was for the last couple of nights. Last night I could actually feel the vibration. I normally sleep with earplugs and couldn’t hear the noise but could feel it, if you know what I mean. It is audible again tonight. We are in Genessee.

pete mossMemberIt was so loud and bothersome Sat. night that I had to close my bedroom window in order to get any sleep! I’m on 51st SW near Genessee. It isn’t a helicopter. It’s some kind of a machine, like a big generator. I hope somebody can find out what it is. It drives me nuts!
February 6, 2012 at 3:24 pm #747220
metrognomeParticipanthave no idea what the noise is as I can’t hear it, but one solution is to play quiet music at a low volume all night. Classical (i.e. Daniel Kobialka’s version of Pachelbel’s Canon) or Native American flute or the Chant or something similar works well. it has to be something consistent with no changes in volume or tempo plus it has to be long enough (i.e 10 min.) so your brain doesn’t notice the repetition.

WoodrowMemberSince Thursday eve,I believe, we also have been closing the bedroom windows to cut down on the amount of noise coming from this mysterious machine… We are near SW Juneau. It can’t be the Rite Aid on California Ave renovations can it?

miwsParticipantI like Alex’s idea, and to expand on that, Trader Joe’s is probably sending out subliminal messages from their upcoming location, and using The Hole to amplify it throughout Wesseattle.
Personally, I believe it’s a huge waste of TJ’s marketing dollars, as they sure as heck don’t need to send any kind of subliminal messages to build up a strong (future) customer base around here!

WednesdayMemberThe mystery continues. At least I know it’s not in my head. How about that very loud aircraft that took off from Boeing yesterday morning, it was so loud that neighbors came running out of houses to look, but we couldn’t see it.
February 6, 2012 at 8:07 pm #747224
kurly212ParticipantI live in Sunrise Heights and I noticed it, too. I agree it was different from “The Hum.” Really loud with all my windows closed, and maybe it was a coincidence but I heard extended dog barking in the neighborhood, like they were bothered by it, too.
