msdortonMemberHello all.
Okay, so I’m new to the area and to the blogging world. I apologize if I do this wrong. I just moved here to West Seattle from a VERY small town in East Tennessee. I was wondering what are some activities to do in West Seattle to meet people. My mom and I moved here on the 1st, but we are both having a hard time meeting people. Since she has now found a job, I will have more time to myself while I search for a job and wanted a way to meet some people. All suggestions are accepted. Thank you!

JanSParticipantwell, hang out here for a while…we’re a friendly bunch. Meetup.com, I believe, has a West Seattle group. I’m not sure what other social groups there might be in West Seattle.
Periodically some of us on this forum get together…for coffee…drinks…whatever. There is a fundraiser for one of the posters (me, actually – there’s another thread about that) on Nov. 06 at the Feedback Lounge in the Morgan Junction. There will (hopefully) be quite a few people from around here that you could meet. Just come and say hi..it’ll be a fun afternoon, and nothing monetarily is expected. I’m just thinking that you’d get us in a small enclosed place, and we run the gambit from early 20’s to in our 60’s, male and female. It would be a chance to “socialize” without feeling out of place like just sitting at a bar :)
And, welcome to West Seattle. It’s a great place to live. Here’s a link to the aforementioned fundraiser…just so you know where we’ll be..

msdortonMemberJanS,
Thanks! So far I love it here. I got a puppy the first weekend I was here and I go to Lincoln park, which is so beautiful, all the time with him.
I probably should have mentioned in my first post that, I’m only nineteen. So going out for drinks, probably wouldn’t work. Coffee would be acceptable though. However, I’ll definitely hang out on here every once in awhile to see whats new in the area.
Oh and I’m terribly sorry you have been sick for so long. If I didn’t have blood type A I would give you a kidney in a heartbeat, no joke. I know what it’s like to be sick for a long time. I have been extremely sick for two years, which is the reason my mom and I moved here. It was either stay in Tennessee and eventually die, or move here. It was the best decision of my life, I must say. :)
Well, I hope to see you around sometime! If you need anything, that I can help with, I’m here.

Talaki34Participantmsdorton…Welcome to you and your MOM! I am originally from the Midwest and just moved up from Olympia WA. I think you and your Mom will like the area. Lots to see and do and the whole area is very eclectic.

EmmyJaneParticipantHi msdorton, and welcome to West Seattle! In terms of meeting people, I think underdog sports has been a good way for some people. You can sign up to play sports and if you’re a single they can add you to a team. Maybe bowling at West Seattle Bowl? Here’s the link: http://www.underdogseattle.com/
Maybe join a volunteer group? If you’re passionate about something, we can probably point you in the right direction for a group around here.
I’ve had friends do match.com and end up with friends in addition to boyfriends. :-)
Anyone on your block have a dog? You could ask them to go for a walk?
Church youth groups?
I’ll try and think of more ideas. I was pretty lonely when I first moved here and went and hung out at the dog park a lot. I don’t have any friends I hang out with from there but the companionship was nice. :-) Good luck!

ezzomr191Participantmsdorton … welcome to West Seattle. I know the trials of moving to a new place so far away from a small town (I moved out here in June from a small town in upstate NY, as soon as I graduated college I was on a plane here). My only advice to you is don’t be afraid to try some new things. I got really lucky volunteering here my first couple weeks and it led to meeting some great people and a nice little bakery. But I took a chance doing something I wouldn’t normally have done living in NY and it paid off huge!
I also took my laps around Lincoln Park when I first got here, nice way to pass the time!
Again, welcome to WS, this is a great community with lots to do, just keep your eyes open.

JanSParticipantmsdorton..well, the fundraiser is out then. It’s, sadly, 21 and over. But…the next time we meet at Cupcake Royale, or some other place that is not restricted by alcohol, you’re definitely invited ! Thanks for the kind words :)

msdortonMemberThanks everyone!
All the ideas sound great. I’ll try some of the ideas and get out there and just try new things.
Volunteering sounds wonderful. However, the sports probably wouldn’t be a good idea since I am still recovering from being ill for the past two years.
Thank you all so much for your responses. I am so glad I live in a town with such kind people. :)

Admiral935Participantmsdorton, I heard the fried chicken dinners at Endolyne Joe’s is quite good (for this region) maybe you could let us know? The best I ever had was in Nashville! I guess it’s once a week on Sunday evenings…. You sure picked a perfect area out here, Lincoln Park is awesome and has the best of the fresh air and watersviews in the this part of the Sound while still being in the city. Good move! I lived in Nashville for a while but had friends near the base of the Blueridge Mountains and went there a few times. The weather out here is nice and moderate. Hopefully that will hold true this Winter. Welcome.

TDeParticipantWelcome to West Seattle! One of the things you could do to meet people would be to take a class in something that interests you. South Seattle Community College is right up the road and there are always interesting classes held by private parties around West Seattle. The Community Centers in West Seattle have lots of interesting classes for reasonable prices. Check out the events tab on this Blog.
And glad you got a puppy. There’s nothing like a warm puppy! There are usually some dog events happening around Halloween.

GoGoParticipantWelcome to WS!!
If/when your puppy has all it’s shots you should check out the dog park at Westcrest. Good place to meet people and fun for your dog!

ellenaterMembermsdorton,
One thing that helped me when I moved here was going to a few places over and over. The cashiers and baristas are very friendly once you become a regular and it helps to integrate and stave off the loneliness. Welcome! If I see anything else specific, I will post here.
