We recently purchased a home in West Seattle, My spouse and I both work in Seattle also. We are hoping to find creative things to do in the area. We have his 6 year old daughter every weekend and we also have 2 dogs. We visit the offleash park regularly but I was hoping to find more “kid” type stuff for us to do with her. I was wondering if there are any suggestions in the area, possible community center activities or such?

You might look at the Seattle Parks and Recreation website…it has information about the goings on at the community centers…

Thanks! We really love it here. We have done the community center swimming thing. That was fun. We really are hoping to meet someone in the area that has kids that we could meet at the park or something. A 6 year old get really bored with only 2 adults to play with. She goes to school during the week in Auburn (with her mom) We would like to make contacts here so she still will want to hang out with us on the weekends.

dvachr… we are also new to the area and have an 8 year old daughter. I don’t know if that is too big of an age difference, but my daughter is dying to meet new friends here. Maybe we could set up a play date for them. Let me know if you are interested and maybe I can forward my email address.

Gosh, Seattle is so rich with activities for kids, The Pacific Science Center, Seattle Center, Seattle Children’s Theater, The Underground Tour, Seattle Waterfront, Seattle Aquarium, The Odyssey Museum, SW Community Center, West Seattle YMCA, The Little Artist in the Junction above Curious Kidstuff, etc… Also, check out the Seattle Child’s Magazine which is free at many area stores as well as schools. Good luck and have fun! Weclone to West Seattle!!

Welcome to West Seattle! there are lots of fun stuff to do in West Seattle. We have so many parks (with spring coming that is a huge bonus). Check out the community centers to see if there are any classes to take. I wonder if the Alki Bathhouse has any classes for 6 year olds? (art classes) Problem is alot of these classes are during the week. Do you belong to the Y? If you do you could bring her to the kids gym on Saturday mornings and I’m sure she could meet some friends there.

How about dance classes, in West Seattle we have a great dance studio Seattle Civiv Dance our daughter met alot of friends while a student there. A The Little Artist they offer art classes and that is another great place to make friends. Arts West offers drama classes as well. The swimming at Coleman Pool at Lincoln Park is a great source to make friends for both of you.

Hey…new resident…we would love to have a play date. I don’t think the age difference is too big. This weekend we have the weekend with out her as her mom has plans this weekend with her. But we would love to get together.

dvachr…. My daughter wont be here this weekend either, but maybe the next weekend we could get together. Also, since everyone was kind enough to forward all these great ideas, maybe we could check something out together. My email is mak31019@yahoo.com, we can connect from there. Hope to hear from you soon!

That sounds great, the public swim at the community center is fun. We haven’t done much else in West Seattle. My email is dvachr@yahoo.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

dvachr and NewResident, Since the kids are both away this coming weekend, maybe the adults could get together for coffee or lunch, or such and scope each other out.

You should sign-up for these Seattle kid-friendly emails for weekly ideas…

    Red Tricycle: http://www.red-tri.com/

A great resource. It tends to have a lot of ads for way too expensive kids stores – but that’s Seattle. Great activities are great! :)

    CityDogBlog: http://citydogmagazine.blogspot.com/

Great upcoming “dog” events – many kid friendly!

    Or join a Playgroup!

    http://playgroup.meetup.com/512/

I’m waiting to see if http://www.dailycandy.com adds a kid section for Seattle….not yet.

Also, check out http://www.nwsource.com and search by dates for fun events – many free!

…and I think I read on here that someone was starting a campfire girls group…

and don’t forget the zoo…they have something on the Saturday before Easter Sunday called Bunny Bounce for kids age 1 to 8.(that’s March 22)

There’s also a place near me called West Side Gymnastics Academy at 2701 Calif. Ave. SW. 206-933-2052. And I understand that they have a summer day camp, too. – coupon in the latest Valpak..came today…

RainyDay, those are awesome ideas. Unfortunately the playgroup that was posted is mostly little kids, like 1,2,3 years old. It’s too bad somebody couldn’t start an older kids playgroup. I’ll start one when my daughter gets that age but nobody has one yet.

Bonnie… This may sound like a really dumb question, but how do you start a play group? I guess dvachr and I are kinda starting one between the two of us. Once we decide exactly what we are gonna do, we could post it to welcome anyone else in that age to group to come along if they want. Is that what you would suggest?

Well I started one up on meetup.com called West Seattle Moms of Tots. I started it on a whim a little over 1 1/2 years ago and thought it wouldn’t work out. Well, it did and I am so busy I don’t even know what to do with myself now. LOL!

You could start one on meetup.com but it costs $12 a month. Or you could start one on yahoo and I think it is free (but kind of hard for people to find)

You could always start one on meetup and if it doesn’t work out cancel it within 30 days. I think you’d get your money back. I’m not sure what you’d call it. Maybe West Seattle Kids Adventure Group or something like that. (oops, that’s the name I might change mine to when my daughter gets older. LOL!) Or maybe if you want just girls you could do West Seattle Girls Adventure Group and have an age guideline like 6-10 or something like that.

There is a lot of stuff you can do. My group is going bowling this afternoon. (mostly 3 and 4 year olds so a 6+ year old would cringe. LOL!) You could put fun stuff on the calendar like bowling, a day at the beach, roller skating, picnics in the park. You could have a backyard painting playdate and bbq. I don’t know…the ideas are endless. Hey, I think I might steal a few of my ideas.

You can email me at fatkitty@comcst.net if you would like to look at my group for an idea what meetup.com looks like and has to offer. Of course, there is still yahoo but I think for the money meetup is pretty good.

    Good luck!

Also please note that we list as many kid/family-friendly events as we can find in both our ongoing Events calendar (tab atop every WSB page) and the West Seattle Weekend Lineup (posted every Friday, you can always find it from its own category on the WSB CATEGORIES list on the right sidebar). Neither is “kid stuff only” but worth browsing from time to time – there’s great stuff from the sources we regularly parse, such as the community centers, including “parents’ night out” child-care opportunities, and more.
