Need to rehome your loving dog?

***************We are looking to adopt a dog, not buy a dog from a breeder!***************

We are searching for:

-A dog that is safe around our toddler

-A true companion for our golden retriever

-Not a puppy (2-4 years old)

-Housebroken or easy to get there

-Gender is less of an issue as personality is,open to male or female

-Must want to play with our golden in our back yard, and just generally be a great companion to our golden

-Would want our golden to meet the dog first if not a couple times to ensure a great fit

-Size should be medium to large (not the size of a chihuahua but not the size of a great dane) (unless it was the PERFECT great dane!)

-We already have enough dog hair, short hair dog would be preferred but we’re flexible!

-Would prefer no history of aggression, this is important

NO PITBULLS, Rots or any other breed that has aggression as a typical trait

We:

We are a married couple who owns their own home in West Seattle.

We are financially secure and responsible.

We have a fully fenced in yard.

We have one adult female golden retriever, super friendly, 5 years old, spayed, housebroken.

We have one female cat, 6 years old, friendly, calm.

We have one toddler, 2 years old, still learning boundaries in life :-)

We are looking to adopt the dog after the holidays (in 4-6 weeks)

1) To address the elephant in the room, I know several American Pit Bull Terriers, Rottweilers, and mixes with either that would fit your profile perfectly. So much so, that their families wouldn’t give them up for anything.

Pdieter – thanks I’ve been leveraging online resources such as petfinder/adoptapet etc. I have an ad posted there as well. I figured I’d ask locally in case there was a family right here in WS that this may work for.

GenHill – I didn’t realize there was an elephant in the room. I appreciate that some families find those types of dogs to be good fits. We simply don’t. Another golden, a spaniel mix or lab will likely be a better fit.

Hi – I believe my aunt and uncle will be rehoming their basset hound (spayed) 1 1/2 year old. I think she is around 60 lbs. My uncle has been having health problems lately and they need to rehome her. She is very sweet, gets along with everyone and everything, comes with everything, up to date on all shots, etc… She LOVES to play with other dogs and is in a home with cats. She is potty trained. GenHill – While I understand the place you’re coming from, I’m particularly sensitive in this area as my chihuahua was recently killed by pitbulls. SO, yeah. They may not all be bad, but I know they are all not for us.

i believe that the biggest disadvantage to adopting a pit bull is the misconceptions created by owners who did not make their pit bulls family members.

if chihauhuas were treated the way too many pitbulls are..

they would be vicious little ankle biting monsters.

The worst bite i ever got from a dog was from a chihauhua:(

We dont’ have a pit bull problem.

We have an ignorant mean dog owner problem.

That said… not everyone is cut out to adopt a dog that requires a fair amount of attention and training.

If you fear dogs at all.. it is best to stick with a smaller highly socialized well trained dog.

we are so lucky that our four legged friends come in so many sizes, shapes and attitudes. There really is a pet perfectly suited for each of us.

JoB – I agree that our furry friends do come in all packages. I don’t really want to go further on the whole pitbull breed vs. owners thing just because it’s too sensitive to my heart still and frankly I’m trying to do a positive here so I’m keeping optimistic!

But I recognize the sensitivities and love that our furry companions offer and for that I think we can all relate.

Looks like you already have lots of good advice so I just want to say thank you so much for wanting to adopt a homeless pet rather than employ a breeder! I second that petfinder.com will lead you to any dog you want and since posts come from all over the country, you will likely find some from our area. Friends of the Animals Foundation (a cat rescue in W. Seattle) posts their kitties there as well :)

In my search I’ve realized there are a lot of people out there needing to give their precious pets away due to different circumstances and so many in a shelter, seems like a good idea to me too. :-)

ARNIE: is a big beautiful Anatolian Shepherd. He was found wandering on route 2 looking for his family who were killed in a car accident. This four year old will need lots of exercise and a well fenced back yard. He is adored by everyone and deserves a happy ending. He needs a new forever family to bond with and be their best friend.

HANNAH:is a one year old beautiful Labrador and a bunch of everything else mix. Hannah loves everyone and is very energetic.

I’m not sure if this would be too small for what you’re looking for, but my family is looking to rehome my sister’s 2 year old Shiu Tzu, CoCo. She is a love bucket – she loves everyone! She just needs more attention than our household can provide. My sister got her as a puppy and then as she became an adult, my sister lost interest. :-( We’re not charging any rehoming fees, but we’re being really picky about where she goes because we just love her so much – we want the best place for her. She’s about 10 llbs and right now her hair is cut short to keep it from matting up. She’d be gorgeous with long hair, but she’s cute with it short too. Let me know if you think she’d be a possibility for you.

Just saw your post.

Might wanna try watching Pitbulls and Paroless sometime(when you feel your able to, given the situation), it happens to be a really great show. On there you also learn that when you already have a dog and are looking to adopt another one, your not the one who chooses the dog, the other dog is.

It also helps shed light on the stereotype of Pitbulls and that they are only aggressive when raised that way. On the show they also have said that mutts tend to be a very jealous breed which also causes some aggression.

Sorry I fell in love with this show on Sunday when there was a marathon on.

Anyways good luck on your search for a dog and sorry about the loss of your chihuahua
