carterParticipantSunday night, post fundraiser for passing Referendum 74 we had a convo with a team of Mormons that hit our street in Upper Fauntleroy. I found their visit interesting because we had a conversation last February with State Senator Michael Baumgartner, at the State Capital, after Governor Gregoire had just signed the Marriage Equality Bill (BTW, he informed us that he didn’t and never would support it but did understand there are people out their like us). During that conversation he said that he did not believe that the Mormon’s would descend on our state ala Prop 8 and California because of Mitt Romney running for President. He believed that Romney would not want to be associated with the meddling that went on in California. Has anyone else have a visit by the boys in black and white?

JVMemberBy “meddling” do you mean the majority of California voters who thought it would be a bad idea to redefine marriage, and passed Prop 8?
Or do you mean “meddling” by the District Court Judge who felt that he alone should have the power to overturn the will of more than 7 million voters? Ya mean that kind of meddling?

JanSParticipantagreed, Mike…meddling like pumping hundreds of thousands of dollars into the Prop. 8 campaign. Yeppers..consenting adults…

JanSParticipantoh, and JV…? discrimination is discrimination, no matter what kind of a label you put on it..

kootchmanMemberHundreds of thousands? That’s all? Geesh we went down cheap! I want the Cristal treatment if I am going to sell my vote…
September 5, 2012 at 5:24 am #769917
JVMemberJanS, millions were pumped (no pun intended) into both sides.
But more went to the redefinition of marriage side, which still lost by a million votes. Everybody could have saved a lot of money and just paid that one judge who believes that he knows better than 7 million California voters.

SmytheMemberThe mormon “church” (aka fringe cult) should have its tax exempt status revoked. Pumping millions of dollars into a hate campaign to limit the rights of Americans should be considered nothing less than domestic terrorism.
September 5, 2012 at 6:00 am #769920
SmytheMemberKeep up the personal insults and say-nothing troll tactics, typical of the media you’ve been brainwashed by. You could only be pro Mormon if you are anti America. Of course we all know that the extreme right (aka “republicans”) want nothing more than to see the USA burn. What else would you call the ceaseless cowardly attacks and bigotry that small minded conservatives seem to know nothing other than? “destroy the village to save it” fake patriots like republicans are the main thing wrong with this nation.

JVMemberSo my last 2 posts got mysteriously deleted, huh?
September 5, 2012 at 6:26 am #769922
WSBKeymasterThe posts to which #10 refers have been flagged and deleted due to personal attacks.
Our basic rule is very simple:
Criticize the comment. Not the commenter.

JVMemberSo then…
Calling people a cult, terrorists, brain washed, anti American, extreme, cowardly, and small minded is cool…
But it’s not okay to comment on the fact that such rantings (and previous similar rantings) are likely to come from somebody who lives in their parents’ basement?
September 5, 2012 at 7:20 am #769924
JanSParticipantJV…them’s the rules…if you’re gonna hang here, then abide by them.Giving the editor lip ain’t gonna get you nowhere…
there are other forums in the world that you can get personal on. Again…grow up, be civil, have a discussion without getting insulting. It’s not needed here.
September 5, 2012 at 1:42 pm #769925
SmittyParticipantThe post by Smythe has no less than six personal attacks.
Why the double standard?
I guess the “very simple” rule needs to be explained further.

KenParticipantConservatives who wish to make personal attacks on a liberal card carrying Democrat, ACLU, NARAL and NORMAL member can email them to me. If you want to meet in person to insult me I will email my address to you. Just understand that as a former biker and gun owner I may respond to abuse and physical attacks the same way you would.
Being old and disabled just means that you can outrun me easily when you realize I am not headed out for a softball game with that aluminum baseball bat.
Now back to the confused thread that always results where denial meets the facts.
BTW go here for “No Proselytizing” sign suitable for printing and posting on your gate. http://www.printablesigns.net/preview/No_Proselytizing

JanSParticipantSmitty, my dear…I may not always like what Smythe says, but I don’t see a personal attack in his posts. I see comments about the Mormon church. No personal comments about a fellow poster. Are we looking at different things?
September 5, 2012 at 4:07 pm #769928
DBPMemberThere is a fine line between attacking someone directly and attacking them indirectly. Most of us have crossed that line at one time or another, including me. Or rather, especially me.
(Once again, my apologies to kootchman, whom I currently owe too many beers to count.)
Anyway, what’s the difference between calling Mr. Smith an idiot and saying “People who believe like Mr. Smith does are idiots.” In practical terms, there isn’t any difference. Still, I suppose Tracy had to draw the line somewhere . . .
***************************************************************************************
Smythe, your anti-Mormon views are so extreme that they’re likely to have the opposite effect of what you intend. I have to ask: Were you actually trying to stir up sympathy for Mormons? Because that’s what your outrageous attacks are doing.
Don’t believe me? Just keep it up and see what happens.
September 5, 2012 at 4:17 pm #769929
skeeterParticipantSmythe (#9) – should the Catholic Church also have its tax exempt status revoked? It also supports the traditional view of marriage (or whatever term we want to call it.)
September 5, 2012 at 4:38 pm #769930
JVMemberJanS,
them’s the rules…
and how many times per week to you call me or Kootch an ASS, or whatever? We just don’t hit the REPORT THIS POST button because we aren’t that sensitive.
September 5, 2012 at 4:56 pm #769931
JanSParticipantKootch and I know each other…personally…but, you go ahead and count how many times I’ve called him an a$$. I’m betting you won’t find how many you think. Now…I am not perfect, so, yes, I’m guilty. I try to not do it, and I don’t get inflammatory about it. I have been called on the carpet on here by the editor, I have had posts deleted, and I accept that I was wrong…how about you?
and, for the record, I didn’t report you…have no idea who did. Get over it.
September 5, 2012 at 4:59 pm #769932
megMemberJV –
The weak-minded aren’t impressed with your lack of sensitivity.
Think about it for awhile, and it will make total sense to you. They respond to enforcement. And then they busy themselves finding even more crafty ways of weaving around anything resembling the spirit of the rule (or law). Thus, they are their own self-fulfilling prophecy, requiring even more laws.
In a world like this, please apply your report button generously. It works like a livestock prod. Welcome to the sheeps’ world. Baaaaa.

TanDLParticipantWhoa… easy there, kids. Life’s too short. We’re all neighbors and community here and we need to uplift one another, not tear each other down over politics. Political drama comes and goes but friends and good neighbors are priceless. How about a time out with some deep inhaling of fresh air this beautiful September day – maybe gain a fresh perspective before resuming political discussions.
September 5, 2012 at 5:26 pm #769934
oddrealityParticipantChurches that meddle in politics, doesn’t matter what thing they meddle in as long as it is political, should pay taxes.Yes, that includes the Catholic church and the Mormon church as well as others. Mega sized churches are getting millions if not billions of our tax dollars to do the same thing they were doing before GW gave them our money. They should pay taxes and we should rescind giving them tax dollars for their charitable works.
September 5, 2012 at 5:36 pm #769935
megMemberI agree. Except take it further. ALL churches need to be taxed. It’s too complicated knowing if they are or aren’t involved with politics. Liberals think its just conservative churches involved, and vice versa. They are all involved (except for a few nice law-abiding ones). Liberal churches that I’ve observed, are all into get out the vote for marriage equality for one thing, and conservatives churches are into the exact opposite.
Too bad for the few law-abiding churches. Unless someone else has a better idea how to selectively assign tax exemption to religious organizations?
