JayDeeParticipantI am hosting a family dinner tomorrow and wanted to have salmon, and while I like sockeye, King is much easier to cook for a crowd. Went to Costco and no chinook, just sockeye at $7.99 a pound. Also farm salmon, but I no longer eat farm salmon due the environmental side effects.

So I checked the online ads and noticed that Thriftway is featuring fresh King filets for $9.99/pound. So I stopped by on the way home and it was true. A nice looking piece of fish and an outstanding price. If you are hankering after a nice piece of local fish, head to Thriftway this weekend (8/15, 8/16).

While I was waiting for the fish to get wrapped I glanced at the sausages and noted that the Morgan St. Thriftway carries Uli’s Sausage from Pike Place Market. While it wasn’t on sale, I didn’t have to walk to the cruise-ship locust packed PPM to get them either. The meat counter fellow said that they’d carried it for 3-4 months. So I scored Uli’s and was impressed by this Thriftway once again. They may be pricey on staples, but the specialty stuff is great.

And though it sounds too simple or second class, the salmon will be marinated in teriyaki sauce for 2-3 hours and it will be grilled simply and be wonderful.

JayDeeParticipantWell, miws, I live in Alki, and if you smell charcoal and maybe a handful of hickory chips, you’ll know you are in the right place, cousin. ;-)

My B-I-L long ago introduced me to the easy alchemy of teriyaki and salmon, and while I have branched out, it is easy to prepare as long as you don’t soak it too long. Using a fish basket, flip the fish once to lightly brown the top and it is perfect. Sockeye can be as good as king, but you gotta stay on top of it or it will be too dry. And feeding all your known and formerly lost relatives is more difficult with sockeye’s thinner filets.

PDieterParticipant“If you are hankering after a nice piece of local fish…”
My hankering has been getting it’s groove on all week.
99% headed into my smoker to be hankered all through the cold hard winter.

sam-cParticipantYUM ! we had grilled salmon tonight too. just plain ol’ olive oil, salt, pepper, and a cedar plank. i usually only buy it on sale too. this was Fresh wild silver salmon from Met. market for $7.99/ lb. they don’t always have it on sale but when they do, you can’t pass it up. (this was from 8/1- so it was in the freezer til the grilling weather and the timing worked out)
We will definitely have to go get some more at Thriftway!!
