odaveyMemberYes I know, another “looking for work” thread… :(
I’m a recent college graduate who’s timing for graduation was far from ideal (December 08). I have been scouring the area for jobs for months now and I am starting to lose hope.
I am looking for something in the tech support field (desktop/networking) but am willing to take on just about anything at this point. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology as well as a degree in Graphic/Web Design, I am Network+ certified. I am also fluent in French.
Any advice on where to start would be greatly appreciated. I am hard working and a fast learner, I just need an opportunity… Thanks a lot for your time.

alki_2008ParticipantYou might want to try some of the consulting companies. Off the top of my head…Kforce Tech, Volt, Siemens IT, F5 Networks, Excell Data, Solutions IQ. If you want to try one of those online job boards, then Dice.com is probably the best bet for your industry.
Good luck! Consulting is usually a great way to get your foot in the door and can lead to full-time jobs with major companies (ie, Microsoft, Amazon, etc).

EmmyJaneParticipantOdavey- Have you tried the career center from the college you graduated from? Another idea is a tech-based recruiting company. I don’t know any tech based ones but recruiters have been very helpful in my job searches.
Here’s something I came across- not entry level but you can apply and see if they’ll meet with you!

trensuelaMemberWhat I did in 2002 (which I think was a way worse job market than now) was beat the street and went into small businesses, doctors offices, etc. and asked if they needed development. I didn’t get any work out of it but I got a sense of accomplishment and learned some marketing skills. In addition to this I retooled my skillsets and learned .Net technologies (I had previously worked on the *Nix side of things, not so good in Seattle). I was fortunate to have a relative who needed some work done, so I was able to gain actual experience working with .Net stuffs. It sux much arse, but be creative and strong and you will be alright.

KevinParticipantThere is a job search group that meets every Thursday at 11AM at C & P Coffee. The group was started by a local West Seattle resident a couple of months ago. No guarantees of success – but we have already “lost” two members.

We even had a professional resume writer stop by several weeks ago and offered free assistance to anyone in the group that needed help with their resume.

It is a very diverse group. A handful of IT folks, an IT director, a mortgage banker, an advertising creative director, and even an HR recruiter to name just a few. Lots of experienced folks to help bounce ideas around.

graysongirlParticipantMy sister-in-law works for Sagem Morpho and she is also fluent in French (it is a French-based company located in Tacoma). Not sure if they have openings, but you could research them and see. Good Luck!
