dudeMemberAny recommendations for an Arborist to trim our trees on our property — we’ve lost our view!
We want to save the trees but just make them a little shorter. Thanks

sohonyusaMemberGive Mallett Arbor Management a call. They are a West Seattle local company that I have heard great things about. 935-2549 or mallettarbor.com

MargLMemberI second Out on a Limb.
You won’t hear the word “topping” from them. If you do hear the phrase “that tree needs to be topped” from anyone you’re looking at, look somewhere else.

herongrrrlParticipantWe had a really good experience with Stonehedge Tree Experts http://www.stonehedgetree.com/services.html (WS based!), and they considerably underbid the others we had estimates from.
Plant Amnesty (http://plantamnesty.org/home/index.aspx) also has a referral service of arborists who will help you preserve your view and still preserve the health of the trees.

jMemberBill Wanless is great. He came and gave our old apple tree a much needed trim during Spring. We were introducted to him at one of the Community Harvest tree pruning classes. It’s very knowledgable, reasonable and just a really nice guy who won’t take you to the cleaners.

goodgracesParticipantAnother vote for Kathy Holzer and her crew. They cleaned up our 100-year-old Western Cedar and cabled it for stability. They did GORGEOUS, careful, respectful work. Really phenomenal!

JoJoMemberI’ve had excellent service over the past 2 years from Bill at Brooke/Wanless Gardens, LLC and look forward to working with him again. Heknow his trees and can confidently make good recommendations for managing your tree as it grows. I would encourage you to talk with someone like Bill before you choose & plant your tree so you have many years of enjoyment and no regrets or surprises when it reaches maturity.

anonymeParticipantKathy Holzer/Out on a Limb, or Mark Harmon/Stonehedge. Bill is a heck of a nice guy and talks trees very well, but I personally have found his pruning methods…odd.
Usually, trees cannot be made “shorter”. A good arborist may do some windowing, but what you’re describing sounds like topping. The best and only way to keep a tree short is to plant a smaller tree to begin with. And remember…a tree IS a view!
