Being a huge fan of the Colbert Report I found this interesting, this study investigated the influence of political ideology on perceptions of Colbert’s political ideology. “There was no significant difference between the groups in thinking Colbert was funny, but conservatives were more likely to report that Colbert only pretends to be joking and genuinely meant what he said while liberals were more likely to report that Colbert used satire and was not serious when offering political statements.”

It’s curious to me how our brains work regarding political leanings. My liberal brain perceives Colbert as clearly a satirist and I could watch the “Report” for hours and stay engaged. Yet, one minute of watching Glenn Beck and “We Surround Them” I find myself shutting down thinking “he can’t be serious, he can’t REALLY believe what he’s selling”. It makes me wonder how middle ground can be found when the liberal/conservative ideologies seem to be becoming more polarized, not less and we seem to be not able to listen to each other.

I remember reading anecdotal accounts of Colbert’s now semi-legendary 2006 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner performance, to the effect that some of those present–including the guy who booked him–didn’t realize he was being satirical. (Bush did, however, and was reportedly Not Amused. Heh.)

(Ken: you’d have to go to their campus to get it, but the UW Library has that journal. I, alas, work for a library with a much smaller budget and don’t have access to it.)

When your life’s a joke it’s kinda hard to laugh at the punchlines.
