I just had a loud obnoxious guy come to my front door trying to sell me steaks. My gut told me there was something very fishy about it so I closed the door in his face. I heard him making his pitch (very loudly) to my elderly neighbor lady. I looked up ‘Iowa Steak Scam’ on Google and found hundreds of hits. I ran next door and told my neighbor that it was a scam. The guy went ballistic on me. I held my ground and demanded he get off her property. He drove away in his truck with him and his 2 cohorts calling me all sorts of names, including the ‘n-word’ (I’m caucasian). Do not trust these guys. This is a scam.

This was in Arbor Heights, just south of Roxbury.

I just checked the Better Business Bureau. This company has a rating of ‘F’ with six complaints against them in the past two years. I make it a point to never, ever buy anything from anyone selling anything door to door. Never. Ever.

Never by meat that you can not verify the origan of. I would say the same if you where buying it from Safeway, but really if you are buying it off the street. You have no idea what type of meat you are getting, or even how it was handled. These steaks could of been sitting unrefigerated for days and then refrozen again. It could be meat that was not packaged in a USDA facility. It could be anything. Not only could this be a scam where you are paying to much for the meat you are getting, it could be poisonous.

I buy produce all time from street vendors. I have done it my entire life. It is much more popular in SoCal. Never buy meats though. It is just a horrible idea.

Next time answer the door with a meat cleaver with raw meat chunks on it, I bet they don’t ask if you’re interested in their pickuptruck steaks.

Well, they are back! And it wasn’t the feeling of a scam- but I thought that my safety was in jeopardy. I looked up out of my picture window, with my two year old by my side, getting ready to Skype Nana… and I saw this transient-looking fellow seemingly talking to himself as he walked down our driveway toward the house. He made eye contact with me and said a few things toward the air, then looked directly at me and said loudly enough that I could hear him through the window [no?!} he swatted at the air and seemed to question himself further as he paced 2 times up and down my drive. I bolted the door. I noticed another man, across the street knocking on my neighbor’s door, and observed him talking to the grub that just left my drive. They both jumped into a truck that had IOWA STEAKS on the side- then I put it together. I lived on 12th ave E on Capitol hill for a decade- no one like that ever came to my door trying to sell stuff- but I often saw them on the corner of Pike selling something else.

Cool! I never thought of recruiting tweakers and homeless to sell stuff. Great business model.
