SmittyParticipantBe honest.
Was this Obama’s best night?
Game on, baby!
Game.
Fricken.
On!
Just donated….the media can’t spin that (although I suppose they will bury it).

SmittyParticipantI take it back.
Even Lawrence O’donnell, Shultzie and Carville admit Romney won. No comments from WSB necessary.
Game change.
(just wait until Ryan waxes Biden)

DBPMemberWhat makes you say that, Smits? I thought Romney looked panicky and that Obama looked much more Presidential all the way through.
Look at the way Romney was getting all red in the face at the end, gesticulating, making chop-chop motions with his hands. This did not project self-confidence. I think if you asked the man himself how he did he’d say not as good as the other guy.
But I think they both did pretty well, actually. I’m proud of both these guys. Proud to be an American as well. Romney actually came up in my opinion as a result of his performance. But Obama came up even more.
(In future, please send all Romney donations to me, and I’ll buy you a beer. That way, at least you’ll get a brewsky out of the deal. With the Republicans, you’ll get nothing.)

SmittyParticipant“(In future, please send all Romney donations to me, and I’ll buy you a beer. That way, at least you’ll get a brewsky out of the deal. With the Republicans, you’ll get nothing.)”
Deal – although my level of donations barely buys two bud lights!
Take care

DBPMemberSmitty, are you talking real fast and making chop-chop motions with your hands right now?
Are you saying “$716 billion dollars” a lot regardless of context?
You could have election season-induced panic attack.
Well don’t panic, ‘cuz now there’s help . . .

NFiorentiniMemberI had predicted that Obama was going to crush Rmoney in this debate and I was wrong. If I were an undecided voter, Rmoney was the clear victor. If this were boxing and words were punches, he had at least a three-to-one advantage in punches thrown over the President.
This was also the first time that I’ve seen him act like someone who isn’t trying to be all things to all people. Rmoney’s programmers have done masterful job perfecting his life-like algorithm.
I’m still not voting for Rmoney and thus allowing GOPers to put their favorite Theocrats on the Supreme Court or enabling the wingnuts to take back the gains that America has made on issues of equality.

dhgParticipantWe all just can’t until Romney gets in and let’s free enterprise run wall street and free enterprise will do wonders in healh care! hell, he’s already seen it do wonders in health care. Our health care system costs about double what the rest of the world pays, and covers only half, but what a wonder! Blue Cross is waiting in the wings to offer affordable plans to diabetics! win win

kootchmanMemberDebates… “he won.. but I won’t vote for him anyway”… Smitty you cannot talk to a liberal… they cannot be be swayed by evidence, by contradiction,….. Romney is a centrist.. and he said it best… you cannot govern without both sides of the aisle… DUH!…… and locking the door and saying FU to conservatives, republicans, independents, libertarians… and having the majority leader say things like/ “we don’t have to compromise, we are the majority” or “when you pass the bill then you get to read it”… that isn’t centrist thought. One down, two to go. Romney tromped Obama… FINALLY Bill Maher said something right “I guess he does need his teleprompter”….. Obama got a lesson in economics for sure! Funny, Obama quotes the Cleveland Clinic as lowering health care costs…. and then forgets to mention ooopps.. Cleveland Clinic is a private provider… Romney didn’t miss that one!

HMC RichParticipant8 years ago Kerry had a good showing vs Bush in their first debate. The President has had better days. Obviously I support Mitt. But I believe a challenger has an edge in the first debate because they do not have a record to defend.
Ryan and Biden should be interesting. We shall see.

kootchmanMemberThat’s what happens when you go on Letterman and The View… and have the network fawning over ya… you start to believe you are bullet proof. Romney has been pushing boulders uphill all year…. Obama …. he be hanging out in Hollywood, Neither one of them recognizes the middle class. Obama ever have a private sector job? Ever? At least Romney knows a paycheck and a payroll are the keys to the middle class.

JoBParticipantI wonder.. if you actually read the debate.. as i did since jet lag had me sleeping through it … and then the slew of fact checking the morning after.. whether you would think that Romney won that debate?
for some middle of the road fact checking.. you might want to try USA Today…

hope you enjoyed that beer
hangovers can be brutal
October 4, 2012 at 1:15 pm #772971
NFiorentiniMemberThe reason that this debate won’t change my mind is because both candidates made claims that couldn’t be verified immediately. Rmoney won on style points, but given enough time, we’ll find out that some of those claims aren’t true.
For instance, Rmoney said repeatedly that his health care “plan” will cover pre-existing condition. Turns out…no, it doesn’t. Rmoney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom admitted that the states themselves would need to implement a plan to cover pre-existing conditions; Rmoney’s “plan” doesn’t directly help them.
And there will be more fact-checking in the coming days.
Anyone that decides who to vote for based on debates, in my opinion, is being lazy. Being a responsible voter means lots reading and studying and debates, advertisements, and soundbites are no substitute.
October 4, 2012 at 1:39 pm #772972
TanDLParticipantRomney was rude to the moderator, refused to play by the rules of the debate and talked like he was amped up on caffeine or something. I’m not sure I want a bully with that much buzz sitting on the nuclear trigger.
October 4, 2012 at 1:42 pm #772973
SmittyParticipantI think there is something to be said about the challenger having the advantage in the first debate. That said, I think he did even better than expected.
He doesn’t need to change our minds – Washington is a done deal – but if he can change 5-10% at the margins in swing States we have a race.
Ryan “should” extend this momentum – BUT the next Presidential debate – which is a town hall forum – should be more in the Presidents comfort zone.
(Steph Miller is trying her darndest this morning. but even she can’t spin this – which speaks volumes)
October 4, 2012 at 2:16 pm #772974
SmittyParticipantThe Today show doing their best to make up for last night!
Guthrie to Obama team: Why didn’t the President bring up issue A, B, C or D? All of which would have helped him last night?
Gregory to Romney team: What if Obama had asked A, B, C or D?
Classic water carrying.
October 4, 2012 at 2:30 pm #772975
kayoParticipantRomney may have won on stylistic points (Obama did seem rather flat last night), but if you look at the substance behind Romney’s words, you can only conclude one thing about him. He is a big, fat, liar. Somehow in his magical world, you can have 5 trillion in tax cuts offset by closing tax loopholes. This is mathematically impossible and laughable. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha. Apparently, Mitt lives in an alternate universe where math doesn’t matter. Also, if Mitt gets elected, good luck finding health insurance if you have a pre-existing condition. Mitt apparently disagreed with his own policy on this issue in the debate last night as admitted by his own campaign. Oops. Oh and this debate didn’t even scratch the surface of any social issues and yes, this does matter to many of us, especially those of us with a vagina. As a female, I respect my privacy way too much to vote for any Republican this year.
Don’t even get me started on Jim Lehrer and his job moderating. He was terrible. Time for some fresh perspective with that regard. He absolutely needs to retire. How about some women moderators?
October 4, 2012 at 2:30 pm #772976
B-squaredParticipantI mostly came away feeling that Lehrer did an extremely poor job at moderating the debate. He let Romney behave like a steamroller. It was as if the real moderator was on strike and Lehrer was a replacement. Jeezzz……

happywalkerParticipant#16 TanDL said it best, to me Romney seemed very passive agressive/boss(y)like. It’s going to be “my way” or else…he doesn’t HAVE to play by the rules, he has never had to.
He thinks he will be able to work both sides of the aisle…huh, thats what Obama thought 4 years ago too, you can see on his face,he knows better now.
Romney has nothing else to do but campaign and work hard to try to look like a “regular” guy. The President has a country/world to keep an eye on as well, and he IS a regular guy.

they were terrible times in America to be a woman.
i thought all of that had been fought and won
turns out to be wishful thinking on my part :(

2 Much WhineParticipantRomney is going to fire Big Bird? That lost my vote (although he never had it anyway). I agree it was not Obama’s best night but it still didn’t change this voters opinion.

KenParticipantThe men American people admire most extravagantly are the most daring liars; the men they detest most violently are those who try and tell them the truth .
— H L Mencken
The results of Wednesday night’s first presidential debate are in and it’s official: Mitt Romney won round one. He was aggressive, he was decisive, he delivered. Of course he also lied through his teeth for most of the debate.
Romney lied:
When he claimed that “pre-existing conditions are covered under my plan.” They’re not.
When he said that President Obama had “cut Medicare by $716 billion to pay for Obamacare.” Obama didn’t.
http://factcheck.org/2012/09/romneys-stump-speech/
When he denied proposing a $5 trillion tax cut. He did.
http://elections.nytimes.com/2012/debates/presidential/2012-10-03#sha=b84167e95
When he said President Obama had “added almost as much to the federal debt as all the prior presidents combined.” Not even close.
http://elections.nytimes.com/2012/debates/presidential/2012-10-03#sha=21002741b
When he resurrected “death panels.” That was called “one of the biggest whoppers of the night.”
http://www.nationaljournal.com/politics/fact-checking-the-presidential-debate-20121003
When he stated that half the green energy companies given stimulus funds had failed. Only if three out of nearly three dozen is half.
