charlabobParticipantWhat’s amazingly cool and hip for kids these days? Ages 10, 11, 13 — G, B, B but all are jocks and very active. They play every sport known to person kind, do legos, read — I just want to know what’s the next new thing (and I don’t have time to do research beyond asking this amazingly well-informed community.) I’ll buy it in WS if it’s there — I always do.

KBearParticipantYou mentioned Lego. That was one of my favorite toys as a kid, and the great thing about it is you can always use more! Even if it’s a set you already have.

luckymom30ParticipantOur daughter is 9 and loves building with her extensive Lego sets. She is also an avid reader (Harry Potter, Anything by Rick Riordan, playing her DSI and Gameboy, listening to Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez. Music CD’s and DVD/Bluray movies are also a good choice. What about a membership to the Pacific Science Center and they can see IMAX films, learn science, take in the exhibits, etc…

charlabobParticipantDid you like GC’s better than $? I’m kind of thinking there’s a difference — I’ve always thought of giving a kid a check as being inordinately lazy, but a GC that acknowledges something about them might be cool. Thanks to the rest of you too — keep those ideas coming.

JustSarahParticipantParents can’t make you deposit a gift certificate into a savings account :-) (That was always a bonus for me when I was a kid.) I loved being given a gift certificate to the book store and just wandering around forever deciding how to put it to best use!

GAnativeParticipantMy girls (10 and almost 13) love Target gift cards because of the large variety of things to use it on…clothes, shoes, toys, music, books, etc.
They also like iTunes cards and the personalized VISA gift cards that they can use anywhere.

luckymom30ParticipantBarnes & Noble, Target gift cards are a great idea! Our daughter got afew Barnes & Noble gift cards for Christmas along with one from Target and she is having the best time picking out her selections and she is also learning a lesson on how darn quick the money will be gone so she is selecting very carefully. Also a gift certificate for one of their favorite activities be it art classes, theater tickets or a special day with you just having fun being together exploring Seattle.

RainyDay1235MemberIf it’s for ALL those kids, you could get them a Nintendo Wii console. It’s $199 – but they would all use it…a LOT! It’s a video game – sure – but it’s interactive, multi-user, good exercise and they can collect sports games from other people for many birthdays and holidays to come! :)

Garden_nymphMemberMy daughter is 12 and for years now her favorite gift to get and give to friends for their birthdays is the Visa gift card. They can use it anywhere and it looks like a credit card. The only drawback is that if you don’t use it all up at one location, you need to know EXACTLY how much is left on the card to use it.

LKTParticipantMy daughter (almost 12) loves to give and receive gifts from Zamboanga and NW Art and Frame: they have so many fun, unusual and creative things. Curious Kidstuff has been a favorite, too.(Especially great for younger kids). She loves ITunes gift cards but the experience of going to Easy Street with a gift certificate is always cool, and we have always received good book advice for different ages at Square One. Atomic Boys in the Admiral Junction is small but has fun, wacky things, (including retro toys) and for an adventure outside West Seattle, Archie McFee’s in Wallingford is a world destination for the quirky and unexpected.
How about a “field trip” in the Junction, where they could explore for treasures and you could create a memory that would last far beyond the gift?

charlabobParticipantFT, thank you for the reminder. I got a “genuine replica” (what the blip is that?) of the Red Ryder for my brother in law when I first married into the charlabob tribe and I’m hoping to get it back when he passes.
I had to lobby long enough with the “no video games will cross our threshold” parents, but “Since it has exercise,” it has now been approved.
Next question — anyone know where (locally) I can get one? Are there new and obsolete models? I can always “Bing” but you guys are much more fun. And thank you all!

moxilotMemberI’m assuming you’re looking for a Wii. Any video game store will carry them. Since the console has been out for awhile, you shouldn’t find any issues with availability. If by ‘local’ you mean close to West Seattle, then there’s Target, Gamestop, or Game Crazy. I’m not aware of any locally owned game stores in the area- but maybe someone can step in with more info.
When you go to the store, you’ll have to remember to purchase all of the ‘ancillary’ items to make the system playable. I believe it only comes with one controller, so if there are three kids you’ll definitely want to buy at least one more controller, or maybe a third (depending on what game they are playing). The basic console has a variety of cool sports games (bowling, tennis, boxing, etc) but there are some really awesome cooperative games out there that force you to utilize teamwork to be successful (the new Super Mario game comes to mind). At any rate, all of the places I mentioned will be able to tell you what to buy if you let them know the ages of the kids and your price range. Good luck! I’m sure the kids are going to love it… and don’t be surprised if the adults end up taking over!

GAnativeParticipantFT – LOL!!! I got a .22 single shot rifle for my 9th birthday; I was so excited and told everyone at school…the phone rang all afternoon with my friend’s parents calling and my mom had to reasure everyone that we would not be playing with the gun at the party.
