CaitParticipant2MW – I thought about that today too! I say we start something like that. That way the uptightniks and the people who could give a crap (ha) about what’s in their garbage don’t have to go through this ridiculousness.
January 11, 2013 at 7:59 am #782020
cwitParticipantCait – if you’re going to use name calling, at least be fair about it. I suggest the uptightniks and the poopyheads to keep in the spirit of the title of this thread.
January 11, 2013 at 1:50 pm #782021
redblackParticipantand the poopyheads continue to insist that they’re somehow in the right and the rest of us are blowing this out of proportion. “no biggie.”
arrogant and unbelievable.
January 11, 2013 at 3:17 pm #782022
anonymeParticipantredblack: right on. And thanks for having the tenacity to not back down in the face of poopyheads.
What would really be just and apt would be for all of the poopyheads to mark their cans as accepting baggies. Wonder how long that would last? I’ll wager not long, as this attitude usually translates to “everyone else must accommodate ME,ME,ME” – and not the other way around.

JustSarahParticipantCait: If you’re dumping your dog’s waste on other people’s property? Yes, IMO that makes you an irresponsible pet owner.
January 11, 2013 at 4:45 pm #782024
dyn99ParticipantSarahScoot:
As discussed previously:
1) The city-owned garbage can is not your property. It belongs to Seattle Public Utilities.
2) The garbage can is not sitting on your property, it is in the city right of way.
3) IT IS FOR GARBAGE FOR GOODNESS SAKE.
What, do you guys like eat out of the inside of your garbage cans? Or really care about the level of cleanliness in them? What are you doing with your garbage cans that require the interiors to be “clean”, huh?
Seriously people, don’t get your panties all in a knot about people putting GARBAGE in a GARBAGE CAN!!! Who cares when it’s such a trivial amount of waste.
Would you guys get this fired up if it was a coffee cup going in your yard waste? I think not…
January 11, 2013 at 4:47 pm #782025
CaitParticipantYou’re gonna want to go back and read everything I said if you’re going to direct every comment on this thread at me. I have never done it, will never do it. I simply don’t mind if people throw theirs in my can. And you don’t know me, so keep your unfounded knee jerk opinions to yourself.
January 11, 2013 at 4:52 pm #782026
JustSarahParticipantIt seems you may need to re-read my comments, actually. I said “If you’re dumping your dog’s waste on other people’s property? Yes, IMO that makes you an irresponsible pet owner.”
If you’re not, then you don’t qualify under my statement. :)
Look, we actually have mutual friends. I’m sure you’re a decent person. I am of the opinion that if people can’t handle all the responsibilities that come with having a pet, they shouldn’t have one. I don’t think that’s an unusual sentiment around here. One of the responsibilities is cleaning up after your pet, which includes carting home its poop.
Maybe it’s the Girl Scout in me (I was one for twelve years), but the “pack it in, pack it out” mentality is ingrained in me. Also, leave a space the same as or better than when you found it. A bag of dog poop does not make a stranger’s trash can better.
January 11, 2013 at 5:06 pm #782027
dyn99ParticipantIt’s a trash can. Seriously.
I rarely leave my toilet a better place than I found it. Or anyone else’s toilet I use. I don’t feel any responsibility to leave a trash can better than I found it, nor should you.
That is just bat-shit crazy thinking there…
Let’s get real here, huh?
January 11, 2013 at 5:14 pm #782028
CaitParticipantIt’s not a responsible or kind generalization to make regardless of reading comprehension.
January 11, 2013 at 5:20 pm #782029
cwitParticipantdyn99 – You keep on with the ‘garbage cans are city owned’ argument but keep glossing over the argument that it’s against the law to use other people’s trash can (or leave a dog’s fecal matter on their lawn, which some people seem to think is the only other option). Let’s stop being selective about which laws you want to go with there.
How about instead of not feeling a responsibility to leave a trash can better than you found it, just leave the trash can alone? I don’t think that’s a bat-sh*t crazy idea – how about you?
January 11, 2013 at 5:25 pm #782030
JustSarahParticipantObviously I’m not seriously saying a person should leave a stranger’s trash can better than it was found (although, on that note, I do think it’s kind to rescue others’ cans from the street on a windy day, as hammerhead recently did). That motto applied specifically to public spaces such as parks, campsites, etc. But the “same as” part applies here.
Really, just carry the poop bag back home.
January 11, 2013 at 6:04 pm #782031
dyn99ParticipantCwit:
I will be out in front of your house with a radar gun tomorrow morning. I hope that when you leave, you don’t exceed the speed limit by 1 mph.
That is against the law, you know.
And God forbid if you don’t walk to the corner to cross the street. Jaywalking is also against the law.
Do you want me to keep going?
The “it’s against the law” argument is incredibly stupid. I’d love to see you try to call the cops on that one.
If it’s not enforced, then it’s not against the law. Laws without enforcement are useless.
January 11, 2013 at 6:34 pm #782032
HomerParticipantYou can’t pick and choose which laws you like and what to abide by…would a cop pull you over for 1 mph over the speed limit, probably not but is it still against the law, yep.
How about you obey they law and if you can’t, at least respect the wishes of others.
January 11, 2013 at 6:37 pm #782033
jwwsParticipantJanuary 11, 2013 at 6:40 pm #782034
cwitParticipantYes, please – keep going, dyn99.
Some people grow vegetables in the city-owned parking strip in front of their houses. It’s city-owned property but it would still be disrespectful for someone else to come up and grab a veggie or two from it. But it’s just a veggie or two, on city-owned property, they won’t miss it – I can cite that and not be considered an a-hole, right?
People state that they think it’s annoying or an inconvenience that other people impose themselves on them by using their garbage cans for putting fecal matter in (yes, yes – city owned, etc. but service paid for by the uptightniks, not the poopyheads) and you state that their thinking is crazy.
When all it boils down to is – respect other people. I understand people who own dogs don’t necessarily don’t want to carry their poop around – that’s not crazy. But to keep saying that it’s totally ok to throw it in someone else’s trash (yes, yes – city owned) even though said person doesn’t want it to be done and calling them ridiculous, insensible, etc. – well, that’s not crazy, that’s just not respecting others (that’s the kindest way to put it).
Seriously, how hard is it to just leave others’ trash cans (yes, yes – city-owned) alone?
January 11, 2013 at 7:22 pm #782035
dyn99ParticipantAlright, Cwit. How do you feel about people leaving coffee cups in your garbage (or yard waste)? Is that a problem?
I suspect not.
January 11, 2013 at 7:29 pm #782036
dyn99ParticipantHomer,
You can’t pass laws in a metro area of nearly 4 million people if they are unenforceable.
Passing a law that prevents people from dumping things in others’ trash cans which sit on city property is unenforceable.
I would nearly guarantee that not a single ticket has ever been written for such a thing.
Mass trash dumping? You bet. Shouldn’t happen.
A single bag of poop or coffee cup?
Nobody cares, so stop making noise.
January 11, 2013 at 7:37 pm #782037
HomerParticipantIf enough people complain or put up a security camera and catch the person in action, they might.
My point is that you keep avoiding the whole point like cwit was saying. It’s against the law, don’t do it. BEYOND that, it seems A LOT of people don’t like this so why be rude to them and disrespect their wishes when it more greatly affects them than you to just carry the bag home?
January 11, 2013 at 7:48 pm #782038
dyn99ParticipantI’ll bet you $100 that SPD wouldn’t respond to that call.
They won’t even respond to car break-ins in person any more.
Do you really think that they care about your neighbor’s dog crap?
Seriously…unbelievable!
January 11, 2013 at 7:56 pm #782039
JustSarahParticipantSo your gauge of what’s OK is based on what SPD will respond to? I’m sorry, what?
Your logic is what’s unbelievable. Going by your own posts, it’s OK to break in to someone’s car because SPD won’t respond to a call reporting it.
January 11, 2013 at 7:57 pm #782040
CaitParticipantUgh. This conversation needs to stop.
January 11, 2013 at 8:21 pm #782041
cwitParticipantdyn99 – if the coffee cup contained poop, then yes, I’d have a minor problem. If not, it’s not as much of a problem b/c I don’t mind the smell of coffee.
Again, the main thing for me here is – people say they find something annoying or an inconvenience (the OP even said they were in no way injured by it) and you go on about how they’re being ridiculous, crazy, etc.
One more time, how hard is it to just not tamper with someone else’s trash can (I know, I know – city-owned)?
Btw, you’re right – nobody cares although we’re probably on the verge of 3 forum pages. This is fun!
January 11, 2013 at 8:28 pm #782042
CaitParticipantI’m glad you think it’s fun. It makes me want to move.
January 11, 2013 at 8:30 pm #782043
dyn99ParticipantCwit – then you have a ridiculous double-standard. It is a TRASH can. For GARBAGE. It’s not supposed to smell pretty. It’s supposed to smell like decomposing waste.
You either don’t want someone throwing anything in your trash, or you don’t care. Pick one.
The stupidest thing about this: They’d be breaking the law by throwing a paper coffee cup in your trash can too – for throwing a compostable item with a recyclable lid in the trash.
Yet you have no objection to that…as long as it doesn’t smell like poop!
