I think cwit should move…to Bellevue. There are lots of people over there that would agree with him/her.

Still avoiding the real issue of being neighborly and respecting people’s wishes are we dyn99?

Being neighborly includes dealing with the realities of living in a city.

People putting “crap” in your garbage can is one of those realities.

If you don’t want to deal with that, move to Enumclaw or something. I hear there’s plenty of cheap land out there.

    Stop complaining.

The only thing I find unbelievable is a person who chooses to take an action that he/she knows bothers another person. Has this behavior served you well so far in life?

dyn99 – Back to the original intent of this post – it’s about dog walkers putting poop into someone else’s garbage can. Not necessarily about putting other things in there.

I only cited that it’s a law b/c you kept on citing the whole city-owned thing – which I consider a double standard myself.

Seems like some folks act as if the OP declared some kind of holy war against poopyheads. I just took it as he/she venting moderately about something that is annoying to them. You telling them that they have better things to bitch about, while you and I have individually posted in here about 10x as much as the OP is funny stuff, right?

Again, it’s a minor inconvenience to me overall but it’s my opinion that I don’t like strangers putting their dog poop in my city-owned trash without my permission b/c I don’t like the smell. Nothing to get ALL CAPS about in reaction to or suggest I move to Bellevue, where I assume you’re generalizing that they’re all uptight. Suggesting that someone move is usually the penultimate response when you run out of responses anyways.

You’re right about it being a ‘TRASH’ can – it’s for ‘GARBAGE.’ That’s what I put in it – garbage. However, I don’t consider fecal matter garbage – yes, that’s my personal opinion. For that, I normally deposit it in the toilet – on a regular basis (I do take my daily intake of fiber, after all).

One of the reasons I don’t own a dog is so I won’t have to deal with their poop – I’d prefer to keep it that way. Is that crazy?

I still haven’t heard an answer to how hard would it be to just not mess with other people’s city-owned trash cans.

Cait – what’s the big deal about this thread? It’s not inconveniencing you and it’s not permanently residing on your property. Heck, you don’t even have to pay for it directly. That makes it all good, right?

spana – once you can get your dog to do that trick, feel free to deposit it in my trash, heck – even my lawn.

Yes, it’s a crazy double standard but what can I say? I like money more than I like poop.

    Cait,

    ;-).

I was just driving up Genesee SW and two women were walking a dog, they scooped and bagged the poop and then deposited it in someone’s Yardwaste or recycle bin (couldn’t tell which, and no, I was not speeding). Now to me that is MUCH WORSE than depositing it in a garbage container, just saying…..please discuss!

I have been reading this thread for what seems like forever. I am firmly in the camp of those who would prefer that my neighbors not use my garbage can for their dog’s crap. It stinks, sometimes the bags break open, and it should be my decision, not a stranger walking by, what goes in my garbage can. Hey, folks could at least ask first.

I don’t think the fact that the city legally owns the garbage cans means much, if anything, in the context of whether other people can put garbage in a residential can without the owner’s permission. Seattle and King County codes and regulations frequently distinguish between residential and public garbage containers, making it reasonably plain that our cans at home are not the same as public trash cans. Also, the Seattle Municipal Code holds the residential owner or occupant responsible for storing waste in a “safe and sanitary” manner, and for maintaining the garbage can in good condition with a tight lid, no holes or jagged edges, and so on. So even if I did not buy my garbage can, I am responsible for taking care of it, which is inconsistent with the notion that other folks can come by and put their garbage in it.

Just to round out the legal stuff, SMC 9.25.082 makes it a violation to “fail to remove the fecal matter deposited by his/her animal on public property or private property of another before the owner leaves the immediate area where the fecal matter was deposited.” The Seattle Animal Shelter’s interpretation of the city code on this issue is that “Animal waste must be removed immediately from public property or property not owned by the pet owner.” And King County’s explanation of the law is: “You may place small amounts of animal poop in your own garbage can or public garbage cans as long as the waste is securely bagged in plastic or wrapped in a closed, leak-proof bag or container.” I don’t read any of these provisions or interpretations of the law to mean that if you happen upon your neighbor’s garbage can when it’s in the alley on collection day or when it’s within reach from the sidewalk, you are entitled to take advantage of it. The more accurate interpretation by far is either take it home and toss it or toss it in a public trash can, such as the cans in all the parks.”

The other argument that has cropped up a few times is that it’s better to put the baggie of poop in your neighbor’s can than to leave the dog poop on their lawn or the planting strip. That’s simply a false dichotomy; there are clearly other options, as we all know.

It’s interesting that this thread has generated so much emotion. Reading the posts, it seems to me that perhaps some people prefer to drop their dog crap in the nearest available can and don’t want to deal with the fact that many, perhaps even most, of their neighbors find it offensive and rude. I noticed that this same issue was discussed a few years ago on the forums, although without the intensity of feeling about it, and then, as now, most people who posted did not want people dropping bags of crap in their garbage cans.

I think if my neighbors approached me and said “hey, that business of putting the dog poop in our garbage cans, it actually offends us and we wish you would stop doing it,” I would at least think about whether I had a genuine claim to the ethical high ground. Because arguments like “that can belongs to the city, not you,” or (more accurately) “it’s dog poop and I don’t want to carry it” don’t cut it.

OMG, move to Mercer Island. Bellevue would be too laid back for you.

Seriously, take some Zanex and chill out. It’s just dog poop.

I am getting the impression that some people who comment on this thread have multipurpose garbage cans…that they use for something other than garbage.

Either that or they are totally OCD.

Maybe those of us who don’t want the poopyhead deposits aren’t the ones who should move.

My garbage can may be owned by the city but I essentially rent it for now. If I rented a couch, I would be offended if you came and left a poop in it. Beyond that, it is not your garbage can either.

The whole thing started with such an innocent little complaint. OP just saying hey this happened and it annoyed me. The emotionally charged responses seems to be about what a bunch of whine babies the no poopyheads are. Sure, it’s a little thing. No one said it wasn’t. But why are some of you getting so worked up about what people want in their garbage?

Realistically, those of you who deposit poopy bags will probably continue to do it. Those of us that wish you wouldn’t will still wish you wouldn’t. Poopyheads are in the wrong legally. No-poopyheads may have a little OCD or control issues. Whatever.

I’ve been reading this with emotion, as well. My neighbors got a dog, and I was starting to find bags of poop in my small trash container. I have a dog, and I wait until trash day to transfer the waste–doube-bagged–to the can. However, little blue bags of poop were showing up…whenever. It got icky when the racoons got into that trash, and though I had a good hunch it was my neighbors,

I decided rather than to confront/ask them (I do know how they might respond), I would just leave a note. The note said: “The racoons are getting into our trash. Please do not use our trash for your poop.”

Well, guess what kind of message I got back? Basically you’re a terrible neighbor; yes, their son placed the poop there “unknowingly”–but how could I leave a note!?; give us our key back…

I’m serious. This poop issue resonated with me.

I will say that though our friendship has cooled, there are no longer small, plastic bags of uninvited poop.

    I’ve tried to look away but can’t. : )

I have a dog and am very aware that having a dog is a privilege. I predict that increasing population density will create more restrictions on dog freedoms. If we as dog owners are not proactive, this time will come sooner rather than later. I think I need to be a model citizen and even pick up other people’s dog poop so the general public doesn’t start to begrudge us these lovely creatures that poop everywhere. I would never put my dog’s poop in someone else’s garbag e can because although it’s just in a day’s walk for me, it is gross excrement to a non dog owner or non dog lover. Why antagonize people? Even if you don’t: understand (and I do get it because I am grossed out by other people’s dog’s poop but not my own), you can respect their sensitivity. Common courtesy.

uptightniks: “we don’t want to deal with, temporarily store, or even smell your dog’s poop.”

poopyheads: “do it anyway, and don’t have the gall to complain about it.”

does that about sum up the argument here?

we can get into the weeds about what constitutes garbage and what’s offensive, but that’s not really the issue.

homer has said it pretty well: this is about being polite and respecting other people’s wishes, whether you think they’re unreasonable or not.

    Wow, what a thread.

What people will go through to try and justify their laziness. They know it’s wrong, but just can’t admit it.

I propose that someone develop a “dog poop friendly” sticker that people can put on their cans. DYN99 and all his/her “chilled out”, “laid back” friends can proudly accept everyone’s poop bags. Those of us that think it’s rude and inconsiderate and lazy can keep all the space in our cans – that we pay for – to ourselves (yes, mine is full every Sunday night).

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a sack of spoiled vegetables to go put in dyn99’s trash.
