mwmwParticipantMy friend’s daughter is turning 4 soon and we’d like to give her something that’s not a toy per her parents request. They have so much stuff already and are hoping for something experience based or creative stuff perhaps educational? We have no idea what to get. Does anyone have recommendations?

miwsParticipantDepending on how close of a relationship you have with the family, and especially the child, (you have babysat/taken her somewhere without her parents before), maybe take her somewhere yourself, around the time of her Birthday, whether it be lunch and/or another experience?
In addition to what kayo has mentioned, there is also the Pacific Science Center, the Aquarium, Woodland Park Zoo, (depending her/your tolerance for un-Summerlike weather).

SueParticipantI always liked buying kids creative type gifts, where they get to make something. It’s still “stuff” that they probably don’t need, but it’s also an experience.

blblParticipantCaspar Babypants CD.
My daughter also got a great home made bath fizz ball craft set. It’s an educational chemistry craft you can do together, then when you’re done, she’ll have heart shaped fizzy bath balls.

suzanneParticipantMy kids loved getting magazine subscriptions. Ladybug Magazine and Ranger Rick were their favorites. And something to look forward to every month.

trickycooljParticipantI am also going to a 4 y/o niece’s bday this weekend. I was told anything Frozen. They even had sheets, blankets, pajamas and the like at Walmart so it’s not a toy but definitely the character of the moment. Mom’s generally still appreciate clothes too since they grow so fast at that age, my niece is unbelievably tall for 4. Everyone goes straight for toys but maybe some cute outfits are in order. Costco always has great sets for kids.

kurly212ParticipantAs an adult who loves the PCC Cooks classes, I agree with those who mentioned them. I like the clothing idea, too.

MercyMoiParticipantAs far as non-toy gifts go, my son at that age liked trips to the Aquarium, Children’s Museum, or Pike Place Market, especially if they included a Water Taxi ride.
If you do want to get a magazine subscription, I highly recommend the National Geographic Little Kids magazine. Make sure you get the Little Kids rather than the Kids magazine – there’s a big difference between then! The Little Kids has puzzles and nature/wildlife articles targeting the younger set (maybe up to 6YO?), and is AD-FREE. Once you are in the Kids subscription there are ads in the magazine which really irritates me. Plus, the stories are geared for, like 9yos – it’s a big jump from the Little Kids version.
I’ll also add, if you are thinking about PCC Kids Cook classes (which fill up crazy fast), why not offer a Cooking Night or Baking Night at your own home? Give the parents a night off and you and the young person get to have fun rolling out cookie dough or wrapping pigs in a blanket and tossing a salad. Kids love spending time with people who care about them.

anonymeParticipantI am just so encouraged at these wonderful suggestions – not a Barbie or a fairy costume in the entire bunch! Maybe all that work we (now) old-timers did as much reviled “feminists” back in the 60’s has paid off after all…

savoirfaireParticipantStone Soup is another subscription possibility:
Welcome to Stone Soup Magazine for young readers, writers, and artists
Creative writing by and for kids… okay, so maybe not this year, but something to keep in mind for the future :)

trickycooljParticipantWent to Costco last night, they had lots of great sets for Christmas which could easily be used for November birthdays. There were neat kits like a book explaining dinosaurs or the human body with a model to build. Probably a bit advanced for 4 (maybe depends?) but still really neat stuff. Of course there’s lots of toys and many Disney Princess themed things but I was encouraged. For my niece I grabbed a Frozen printed throw blanket (I think the weather steered me to warm and fuzzy!) and a cute legging outfit complete with a cat ear headband to match the picture on the shirt! They also had several different character printed bath robes, not sure how many kids normally have a robe but I always liked it when my relatives sent me one as a kid. Most of all I didn’t break the bank right before Christmas since I’ll have to turn around and do the same next month.
Now I need to go practice my mini-golf skills for the birthday party.
