CaduceusMemberMy girlfriend has a craft book where you make miscellaneous things from fabric but hancock fabrics closed down I guess?
Can you all suggest a fabric store.

stitches on pike st. smallish selection and kind of expensive but really fun and funky
in the pike st market there is a great shop for cotton fabrics, an amazing amount packed into a little tiny store.
on queen anne is nancys sewing basket which has a a little bit of everything
then if you don’t mind going all the way over to bellevue quilt works northwest has a very good selection of cotton quilting fabrics.
If you want inexpensive, your best bet is jo anns. though i’d highly recommend supporting the small businesses :o]

flowerpetalMemberWe miss Hancock’s weekly! Pac Fab is fine, but not the same. JoAnn’s in Ballard is easier than South Center I think. I hate traveling around South Center.
Do take a look at fabric at Goodwill on Dearborn as well as the Value Village stores. GW in particular, always has yardage from some project that was dreamed of and never came to fruition and the “truck in the neighborhood” came first.

IrukandjiParticipantI love the Pacific Fabrics outlet on 4th S. mentioned in post #2. It’s been home to some of my favorite fabric finds, and they’ll to the long-arm quilt stitching that I just can’t deal with.

inactiveMemberI’m not a big sewer. At all. So, I only have occasion to shop a fabric/notions place probably a couple of times a year.
Even so, and maybe I’m just getting too old and sentimental or something, but it strikes me as weird that a small fabric store (aside from strictly upholstery or strictly quilting fabrics) is not to be found in WS or Burien.
I do go to Pacific Fabrics now, because I dislike Southcenter. Maybe my POV is skewed from having lived on Queen Anne for so long, where Nancy’s is. Nancy’s is a very, very nice, rather tiny, high-end store. It makes me assume that WS, or at least the peninsula at large, would have a little place like that. But a volume place like Pacific is definitely more economical.

IrukandjiParticipantNancy’s is GREAT, and indeed pricey. The staff there were always so helpful with projects, and their ribbon collection is extensive. Since my projects have always tended to be kid-focused, I’ve been able to shoot low-end, mostly, hence the PFO leaning. If you’re doing nice stuff, Nancy’s is definitely a place to go.

inactiveMemberOh, yeah…the ribbon collection. You reminded me…definitely inspired stuff (that backroom was filled with ribbons, right?) Wow. You’ve no idea how impressive it is that I’m even remembering this ;).
Also, now that you’ve jogged my memory, I’m recalling they had awesome flannels as well. I don’t THINK I’m making that up. Lot of yummy gown kind of material too….just lushy and yummy stuff all around!
I think I might need to go there soon just to look and touch all again. I’ll never sew anything though :D. I’m so weird. ;).

JulieMemberI second Nancy’s (and the lush ribbon collection, and the knowledgeable and courteous employees), and wish it, or something similar, would come to our little corner of the world.
I do hope for Hancock’s return, also.
I’d also suggest that Pacific Fabric near Northgate has a more extensive collection of interesting fabric than does the outlet store on 4th (albeit farther away, so it depends what you’re looking for).

celeste17ParticipantYou could also try AAA sewing and Vacuum on 1st Ave (top hat area). I know they sell sewing machines and give lessons. Just don’t know if they give lessons on machines other then the ones they sell.

There is a quilt/fabric store in Ballard too. Its on Market street, west of 24th Ave. I don’t recall the name of this shop.

celeste17ParticipantWhen I was young there was a fabric store in the junction called junction fabrics. There was a little of everything there. I remember stopping in and she showed me how to do counted cross stitch and she made me a copy of the fabric and sold me the fabric and thread and I was able to make a cross stitch wedding bride and groom for my oldest brother and wife. It became a hobby that I still do to this day.

BayouMemberI’m a newbie to sewing but I can second the recommendation for classes with Joey at Make It Workshop. She’s has a great studio and attitude.
I spent a good bit of time in JoAnn’s in southcenter yesterday picking up fabric. They have a HUGE sale going on right now with most items 30-50% off so I saved a ton. They have a large selection and friendly staff but the line to get out of there was pure insanity with around 50 people waiting.
I really look forward to Hancock’s reopening but I, too, am surprised that there isn’t a small local fabric place on the westside.

herongrrrlParticipantI second the suggestion to check out thrift stores–I’ve found great yarn and yard goods at Goodwill and Value Village in White Ctr and Burien, respectively.
Another option, depending on what kind of projects you want to do, is recycling your own old clothes (or buying thrift store clothes with fabric you like). Threadbanger.com is geared toward a younger demographic than I’m in, but I really enjoy their video tutorials and they have some great creative ideas. You can sign up for their weekly email newsletter for a steady source of ideas and inspiration.
JoAnn’s also offers lots of classes, for folks just beginning their fiber arts adventures the trek to Southcenter might be worth it to take a couple.
I miss Hancock’s too. I hope they reopen as scheduled, or if they don’t that someone else steps into the gap!

LidaMemberUndercover Quilts in Pike Place Market has beautiful cotton fabric. I am boycotting Joann’s. On the whole, their fabric is yucky and their sales people were rude to me.
