I’ve owned a TIVO/DVR unit for several years now and have totally relished the experience of TV without commercials. However, in wanting to keep up with the screams of my neighbors during the Olympics, I have been watching live TV this week, including the commercials.

Needless to say I am aghast at not only the amount of commercials during shows, but the ridiculous and inane language and symbols that are used in order to get people to buy things or accept ideas. For example, does Foster Farms really think that a couple of dirty stuffed chickens running around trying to get accepted is going to convince me to buy their chickens? Or how many different types of maxi pads can women really consider? And if I ever catch a man singing the “Viva Viagra” song I’ll have to hit him with something hard!

And don’t get me started on the political ads….. I was overseas during the first Rossi vs Gregoire go around and I’m judging from the new ads that things haven’t changed much.

So word to my neighbors: if you hear me screaming for the USA 15 minutes after anything exciting happens, you’ll know I’ve returned to watching things on TIVO sans commercials, which means I’ll be a little behind:)

    Short answer:

    yes

Longer answer: The aggregate “We” prove it to them every day.

I have been building dvrs since the first tv cards were sold.

“And if I ever catch a man singing the “Viva Viagra” song I’ll have to hit him with something hard!”

I’m going to have to take this choice of words as an indication that ultimately the advertisers know what they are doing.

    ;)
