JoBParticipantJust a heads up for anyone who has small animals and lives just up the hill from Lincoln park… the coyotes are out tonight..
more than one is howling in the wooded area just down the hill from California and Southern.
If they are howling that might mean mating season is upon us and it is not a good time to encounter them.

felicialhMemberThanks JoB… two weeks ago we went out to our car to grab something at about 9pm and a coyote was prancing down our sidewalk… we are at 40th & Barton and can only guess that they are in the park across from 41st (can’t remember the name).

JoBParticipantfelicialh… there are quite a few wooded areas on the hillside stretching from Alki beach way past Faunteroy park… and i think they move in between them. if it is mating season, they will be more on the prowl than normal.

AnonymousInactiveNow that so much has been spoken about the coyotes, I sincerely hope that all owners of pets will put their beloved pets in their house to prevent an awful end to a pets life.

AnonymousInactiveI never knew you had coyotes here. Thank you so much, everyone, for the heads up! We will be watching our dog very closely! Do they tend to stick around throughout the summer?

AnonymousInactiveWe also have weasels too, very large ones in the neighborhood. I just feel so sorry for all the cats and dogs left outside who are a meal on a platter for the coyotes.

JoBParticipanti think my dogs wouldn’t be such an easy meal. i have seen them hunt. but it isn’t good to have pets outside unattended at any time.

AnonymousInactiveI see way too many dogs and cats outside all the time unattended. I also have a huge pet peeve for dogs and cats left outside druing rainy, and snowy weather. Unfortunately the people who live behind us always leave their dog on the deck without food, water or shelter to get out of the bad weather.

AnonymousInactivelettemom… From the other thread “Parking etiquette”, I know that you live right by me. I know exactly which house you are referring to regarding the dogs left unattended outside. It’s really sad.

JeraldParticipantLarge weasels? Do you mean rats? Or opossums?

kathyMemberJust to re-emphasize the danger that coyotes present to dogs, my sister reports from Brookline, MA (a Boston suburb) that a coyote attacked an elderly beagle who was sniffing down the coyote. The beagle is going to be okay, but it showed me that the coyote danger should not be under estimated.

JanSParticipantwell, we have rats, opossums, raccoons, coyotes, mountain beaver, red foxes. This is an area where there was once old growth forests (still some out there in places – Schmitz Park, for example)….and we came into their territory, not the other way around. Do take care of your pets….and all can live peacefully together :)

AnonymousInactiveNewResident: So we live close by?? The house I am referring to is on 34th and it only has 1 dog a beautiful shephard mix that does not have a fur coat for cold and wintery days and nights. I have wanted to say something to the owners without totally offending them, but they apparently are gone all day and if I threw a blanket over the fence it would do very little on soggy days.

WhaleParticipantWhoa! I’ll keep a lookout! Thanks for the “heads up”!

datamuseParticipantRe: whether they stick around through the summer: yes. They live here.
Re: coyotes in Massachusetts, coyotes back east and particularly in New England and northwards are often coyote-wolf hybrids. They are larger and more aggressive than the ones we have out here. Not that you shouldn’t be cautious around them here too, especially if you have pets…

JoBParticipantmy warning was from 2008.. when i lived up the hill from Lincoln Park..
but it’s still relevant. I live by Westwood now and have seen coyotes in my alley.
there are plenty of people here who think their cats shouldn’t be confined.. and plenty of possums and racoons and rats.. good eating for coyotes.August 2, 2016 at 5:37 pm #853097
Talaki34ParticipantYes, dogs can be a meal source too. Small and even medium size dogs are at the greatest risk, but don’t think they won’t attack a larger dog they perceive as weak or is invading their territory especially if young are present.
Healthy or sick the coyote is adaptive when looking at something as a food source. Normal prey, seeds, nuts, fruits and berries, cats/dogs/the food you put out for them, your bunnies…They are scavengers and will eat just about anything. Coyotes are smart too. They will hunt as individuals, in pairs or as a family unit.
There is some good information out there. Here are some sites to get you started.

http://effectivewildlifesolutions.com/category/animals-info/As always, knowledge is the most important thing for living successfully with wild animals especially in an urbanized environment. No reason to fear the coyote, but respecting it would be in yours, your animals and the coyote’s best interest.
-Think welded wire not chicken wire when doing an outdoor enclosure.

dhgParticipantI’ve never heard of weasels here but we do have river otters and they look like large weasels except for their very big caboose.
