celeste17ParticipantHi all, is anyone out in our great group knowledgeable about windows and internet browsers? I am running XP and I have both IE and Flock. Up until last Sunday my computer was running just great. Then Sunday I did an update and now my computer is running slow. I am having problems accessing a site called http://www.pogo.com. yesterday I did a restore to Saturday and now when I go to Pogo and try to load a game it closes the window. I updated my McAfee so that is not a problem. Any suggestions? I really don’t want to take the laptop to a fix it shop as I don’t have the money.

SueParticipantDid you by chance update Flash? Every since I got the latest version of it, my computer has been running very slow and IE crashes on me constantly. I googled the error code I was getting and found out a lot of people were having the same issues. I uninstalled Flash, but then the sites I go to most regularly couldn’t function, and I couldn’t find anywhere to download the previous version of Flash. Very frustrating.

What TheMemberWhat exactly did you update? What version of IE are you on? Hopefully not 8 as that no longer works for me and I now use Firefox. I couldn’t even restore back to IE7 so now I can’t even watch NetFlix movies on my pc as Firefox doesn’t support it nor does IE8….also, which browser are you trying to open the site with?

celeste17ParticipantI am using IE 7 and/or Flock (I believe this is a version Netscape). I just did a windows update on Saturday and that is when I seemed to have problems. I often have problems after windows does an update.

What TheMemberWell, I can tell you that Service Pack 3 hosed my pc and it spent a week at Quidnunc at a cost of over $300…try going into Add/Remove Programs and see if you can uninstall the Windows Update.

grrltravelerMemberIn my experience, I have found that service pack 3 isn’t consistent with XP so my office doesn’t update to service pack 3. When I have problems with IE7 shutting down, I run spyware programs like Ad Aware and Spybot s&D (down on tucows.com for free, make sure it is Spybot Search and Destroy and nothing else!) and run that to clean up malware. It might help the problem. If not, take a USB drive (the little thumb drive) to someone else’s computer and download Firefox so you have a browser you can use since IE7 problems are a tough fix and you can’t go back to 6 without re-installing the operating system. That’s my two cents. :) Good luck!

SueParticipantI’ve heard a lot of people who have had computer issues after installing Service Pack 3; gladly I heard about that before I was prompted to install it so I could ignore it.

KenParticipantI can fix it. I work for donations. Gimme an email. My email is linked to my name. It doesn’t matter what the problem is, I can figure it out and I like the puzzles.
Flock is somewhat specialized and does not have as good a bug identification and fix process as firefox.
You can see if your problem is browser based or not by installing standard firefox and testing the same sites. Install it in another directory if it recognizes flock as a previous firefox install.
If you routinely go to the kind of sites Flock is designed for, you better have more than one spy ware scanner and an AV besides McCaffee.

cjboffoliParticipantI used to get weekly calls from my 85 year-old grandmother who’d complain about the problems she was having accessing the Pogo website. I’d take a look at her PC and it would always be bogged down with spyware, viruses and other miscellaneous junk.
Then I bought my grandmother an Apple iMac. And now all she calls to complain about it is her irritable bowel syndrome.

AnonymousInactiveSince people are recommending Macintosh, I wanted to mention Mandriva Linux. It is a free operating system that is easy to install, use, and update, and major releases can be installed without losing your data. It offers to install itself so you can dual-boot at first if you are afraid of not having Micros~1 Windows installed. Then you can boot into either Mandriva Linux or Micros~1 Windows.
The simple version is that Linux is an open-source functional equivalent of commercial UNIX, *nix is used as an abbreviation for the group of modern UNIX-like systems, and Mac OS X is built on the Mach kernel and BSD, so Mac OS X has been a *nix since 2001.
Instead of buying a Macintosh computer, people can download (for free) and install different distributions of Linux on their existing computers that they are using for Micros~1 Windows.
