Climb to Fight Breast Cancer – Event Ideas?

Hello West Seattle!

As some of you know, I’m climbing Mount Rainier this summer with a group raising fund for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. I’d like to put together an event (or two) in West Seattle to help raise funds to donate to Fred Hutch. Maybe you know of a friendly restaraunt or bar where we could hold a neighborhood get-together? Maybe have some drink specials with money going to the climb? Silent auction items? Live auction?

If you have any ideas place let me know! And if you have anything to donate for auction items, please contact me!

Have you checked in with Talarico’s? Not sure about the drink specials but they definitely have the space for large groups.

So far my idea is to do a silent auction of outdoor/nature photography by local artists (ams and pros).

Check out the local photography groups on flickr, members may be willing to donate to your cause. Check with establishments you frequent and see if they’ll host a fund raising event for you.

Maybe you can piggyback with the ArtWalk and have the photos displayed (and for sale) somewhere…maybe even be there to take “orders” for reprints and, of course, have a donation jar. That way you would have a built-in audience and also promote it to others without a lot of the work that comes with the traditional silent auction route.

If you have the space, a really big yard sale can bring in dollars. I did one a number of years ago to raise money for Cancer Lifeline. Friends donated clothing, computer stuff, housewares–an amazing amount of great stuff. We borrowed tables w/ folding legs from a school to display everything. Also had a sign on an easel describing the reason for the fundraiser and placed a tip jar out. By the end of the weekend, we had raised $600.

It looks like Talarico’s is going to be the venue. Near the end of March will be the date. (Around the 23rd-25th).

So far I have 6 photographers lined up. There will be a couple of golrious prints fully matted and framed, a few photos mounted/matted and ready to frame (I’m also looking for a frame shop to sponsor the event, and maybe offer a coupon for everyone who buys a print).
