Recommendations for Chinese food in W.Seattle, esp. Morgan Junction? And to keep the topic focused, I’m interested only in Chinese – not pan-Asian, Thai, Japanese (I’ve got my own choices for those) – and only in W.Seattle (I’ve got my own faves in the ID).

We had been going to Ho Win but the last two times have been quite Ho Hum and we’re hoping there’s something better.

I’ve had issues with chinese food since moving to Seattle since it’s so incredibly different than what is served in New York, so I haven’t been happy with it. When I want something local, we do go to Ho Win, which is passable. But usually we drive to Burien where I found a place that is the closest to what I’m looking for and really enjoy. It’s called Happy Garden at 14301 Ambaum Blvd SW. No, it’s not West Seattle, but we’ll usually tie it in with a trip to Fred Meyer or Trader Joe’s as long as we’re down there.

We were regulars at Ho Win as well and noticed some randomness in the quality of the food. Things over-cooked or cooked in off-tasting oil. So we take a break and get stuff from Lee’s for awhile.

If I’m in the mood for really cheap-o I’ll go to the deli at Safeway (Roxbury only!) or Thriftway.

New Teriyaki & Wok next to Thriftway does passable yakisoba stir-fry and sweet-sauced chicken bits.

I would have mentioned New Teriyaki and Wok (in the “strip mall” type storefronts between Thriftway and McDonald’s, east side of California) if MargL hadn’t. Kung Pao Chicken and General Tso’s Chicken in particular. Not gourmet but good and REALLY nice people. Some tables for sitdown.

With all the good places to eat in WS, you’d think we’d have decent Chinese somewhere. But, alas, no. Yen Wor in the Admial District is a “no” for me, although in the past I’ve had their hot and sour soup which I thought extremely tasty. But I’d pass on most other stuff as being just ordinary :(

We made the mistake of trying Yen Wor once two years ago and hated it. It was just bad.

Ho-Win’s mediocre, but I do like that they don’t cook their veggies to death.

Lee’s Asian is great for some classic American Chinese take-out classics, but the assortment isn’t huge, since they share menu space with Thai and Vietnamese items.

I agree that the New Teriyaki and Wok is pretty tasty, but again, it’s not mostly Chinese dishes. I’ve heard the Chinese restaurant attached to West Seattle Bowl is good, but I’ve never been.

kennem, out of curiousity, what are your favorites in the ID?

The bowling alley has a chinese food restaurant attached to it – I’ve heard that it is good. I have not gotten around to trying it though.. food for thought.. :)

Franci..I’ve had french fries while at the bowling alley watching a friend bowl…tasted peculiarly like egg roll – lol..I’m pretty sure they use the same oil for both. The food is definitely not gourmet, but average.

I would not suggest going to the Chinese restaurant in the bowling alley. Been there and I would prefer Yen Wor over what they serve.

We’ve tried the Chinese restaurant in the WS Bowling alley. The stuff from Ho Win is better.

Thanks for the great replies, everyone. Anyone tried Jade West, the little hole in the wall on the east side of California at Raymond? We haven’t tried it yet but will do so next time.

maplesyrup, you ask about our ID faves. We like the three below because they’re consistently good and the vegetables taste like vegetables. (“The snozberries taste like snozberries!” Anyone name that quote – without using Google? <grin>)

Kau Kau (on King St.) specializes in BBQ (pork, duck) which I really like, and its other dishes are good too. (I once tried to order the goat, which was on the menu, but they didn’t have it. Maybe next time.)

Hing Loon, on Weller, and Shanghai Garden, on 6th Ave. S, are winners too.

I second the Kung Pao Chicken recommendation at New Teriyaki and Wok.

Thanks, lowmanbeach, for the note on Jade West. The lukewarm review for its lunch/dinner puts it in the same category as the others, I guess.

Off-topic: And pigeonmom, right on! When you come down from the smokestack, for extra credit maybe you can tell us which character said it? :)

kennem, have you tried Lee’s Asian in Alaska Junction? That’s my favorite.

Kennem, Mr. Wonka himself said it in the wallpaper licking scene. Veruca Salt replied, “Snozzberries, who’s ever heard of a snozzberry?”
