We went camping at Rimrock Lake this weekend and I captured some shots of this amazing little guy. Any idea what he is? He was a couple inches long and quite beefy. I can’t find anything similar on the internet. Maybe some sort of beetle?

I don’t know offhand but you can try asking the people at whatsthatbug.com.

Maybe its one of the beattles that kill the forest. Will be interesting to see what you find out. Keep us informed.

Datamuse, I coincidentally did send off a note to wtb :) In the meantime I’m also scouring their pictures. I think he could be a type of Longhorned Borer Beetle. We’ll see if I get a response. Thanks!

May be a Mormon Cricket. Any other pictures from other angles? Tail? Wings? Segments?

May be a variety of such: http://bugguide.net/node/view/272518/bgimage

Nice call! I saw a picture of a mormon cricket, but it was all black so I didn’t think that could be it. My guy didn’t appear to have wings, but rather armorlike segments on his back, like the mormon cricket picture shows. This gives me another avenue to venture down at least. Here’s another view of him.

I’m no expert, but it looks like a cricket to me. Cool head gear!

Yep! I think that’s it! They come in different varieties depending on locale. Even bright green!! Known as Katydids (Orthoptera) – armored like you said!

By the way, have you seen this?

Definitely some species of cricket, possibly mole cricket. Don’t get too hung up on color, insects go through many color morphs depending on where they are in the molting cycle as well as individual differences. Will continue searching…

Western Chunky Bush Cricket might be a good bet. Again, don’t be distracted by a lack of bright color…

Found it! The tip-off as a Mormon Cricket did the trick. He’s a Hump-Winged Cricket, specifically Cyphoderris Monstrosa.
