andreaParticipantI was on my run just now, going down 48th Ave to Beach Drive, when I came across an injured bird on the sidewalk. It can’t fly and is just hopping around looking for somewhere to hide (in a rock crevice right now). It is quite pretty (grey & black feathrrs with a grey & reddish head) and obviously in need of some help. I don’t know who I should call to come get it or even who to bring it to. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!!!

tanyar23ParticipantYou could take it to Sarvey Wildlife Center. Here’s their contact info:

maudeParticipantI had a baby squirrel in my yard and contacted Sarvey Wildlife Center. They took the baby but I had to deliver it to a vet in Renton first. They didn’t have the funds to come to individual houses.

Do not take the bird to PAWS Wildlife Rehab Center.

mehud7ParticipantVCA Five Corners in Burien also holds wildlife for Sarvey. The PAWS wildlife hospital in Lynnwood also does excellent work. Don’t forget to make a donation to the rescue group.

tanyar23ParticipantWere you able to help the bird?

furryfacesParticipantPaws wildlife hospital does do a lot of good work. At the same time their policy is to euthanize the animal if it cannot be released back to the wild…even if there are other quality of life options for the animal.

SonomaParticipantKeep us posted, Andrea! And thank you for helping the bird – truly kind of you.

andreaParticipantHi all! Thank you so much for all of your responses. I knew when neither my husband nor I could come up with the right place to contact regarding the bird, that the WSB forum community would know what to do!
As I was on a run and without any bird catching paraphernalia, I had to leave the bird to its little rocky hiding place til I got home. My husband couldn’t come get me as he was at home while our 10mo twins were napping. He did get the number for Sarvey (thank you WSB) and called them (he had previously called the Seattle Animal Shelter and the West Sound Wildlife Shelter, who both stated that in instances like this they do not come out to rescue the animal and prefer to just ‘let nature take its course.’ ugh). Sarvey was very informative and helpful with what we should do with the bird, and once I got home, I got in my car with a beer bottle case box (!) from the recycle bin and drove back to where I had seen the bird.
But he was gone! I looked all over the rockery along 48th there, right past where the covered tree line is, and he was not in his hidey hole anymore. I couldn’t see him anywhere at my eye level or lower where he had been hoping around before. It had been less than an hour since I had last seen him, so I had hoped he would be OK in the meantime…I did check the street and nearby driveway and didn’t see anything resembling a bird. So, while I had the best of intentions to help this injured fellow out, after 15 minutes of looking around and whistling to see if I heard him, I ended up leaving empty handed. If anyone is out walking, running, biking or whatever up from Lowman Beach or down to Beach Drive on 48th this holiday weekend, please take a peek over along the sidewalk there on the westside of the street and see if the little guy is still hoping around. I’m sure he’s very hungry/thirsty/scared if he’s still there. And please, please all Sarvey if you see him! Thanks everyone!
