I have noticed that this advertisement has been running on Craigslist for months at a time now reposting itself every other day or so. There are maybe two of these adds asking for women to rent out a room. Anytime this happens, you have to wonder and ask yourself if this is a scam or is this poster a psycho. You can find it in the room/shared section and just keyword West Seattle. I’d watch out for this dog ladie’s.

Looking to share my home with an outgoing, fun and responsible female! Must like bbq’s @ 420 and sometimes small house parties (not to often as I am gone a lot on business. I am a male and professional business owner and pretty laid back. Quiet most of the time and like to cook, bike, blade, hike when I have time. Washer and dryer, the house is wired for cable and dsl. Email me if this sounds interesting! Good luck in your searching!

thanks, jiggers. What some guys won’t go through for whatever, huh. The telling line is “priss’s need not apply”. Obviously, this guy is expecting mre than just a roommate…

You can actually post this as prohibited on Craigslist.

“Stating a discriminatory preference in a housing post is illegal – please flag discriminatory posts as prohibited”

Under federal Fair Housing law, the prohibition on discriminatory advertisements applies to all situations except the following:

    * Shared Housing Exemption — If you are advertising a shared housing unit, in which tenants will be sharing a bathroom, kitchen, or other common area, you may express a preference based upon sex only.

That said, I agree that it’s creepy and wrong.

Wow. That’s a lot of effort to go to just to find someone to smoke up with…

That’s what I thought datamuse. I know CL is a bit loosy goosy, but if someone is openly looking for a room mate to smoke pot with…

I recently rented out my basement and I cannot even repeat on this blog what one of the prospective renters asked me. Apparently they thought someone who owned a home would be a good date prospect too.

Ah, thanks for the clarification on the exemption Hopey.

Zenguy, I’m afraid to ask… but curious too, lol.

To each their own. You might be surprised how many people this might appeal to; it is craigslist, everything goes :]

Better to get it out in the open what you would be expecting of your new roommate instead of having them find out the hard way…

What woman in her right mind would respond to this? Ugggh. Creepy. Any man specifically asking for a woman roommate would probably end up watching you sleep or some crazy sh*t.

There are some real doozies out there.. :)

    I recall about 20 years ago when I was looking to rent a room – I looked at many places – one of the prospective home owners wanted me to provide to him with a very detailed schedule of;

When I would be at work

When I would be home and asleep

When I would be home and awake

When I would be home and want to use the

    kitchen..

    etc..

I don’t remember the rest of the categories. Basically he had a grid layed out on paper with 24 hours a day X 7 days a week, and expected renters to provide him very detailed schedules of their lives.

Needless to say I did not rent from him. :)

Franci, I also had a strange situation a little over 20 years ago – I was out looking for my first apartment and the potential landlord was telling me how I had to make sure that I had “nice” furniture because it was a “nice” place. (What “nice” was supposed to be, I have no idea.) And I had to make sure that it was always clean, because he was going to come in and make sure it was. And I could never have any guests come over of the opposite sex, and no guests at all after 8pm at night. And no parties. The list went on and on, and it was absolutely unreasonable. At the time I was looking to share with my stepsister, who was ready to sign on the dotted line and I told her that there was no way in hell I’d take an apartment with all those provisions (and then some).

Then there was the guy I reported because while we were looking he was saying how he loved that we were interested in it because he wanted to keep his building “just like this wall, if you know what I mean” (meaning white).

Come to think of it, I could probably write a book about the creepy places I’ve potentially rented, as well as insane places I *did* live in. Add in all the bad dates I’ve had, and you’ve got yourself a good sitcom. :)

Yes, it is an amuzing story and am happy to tell it over a beer.

There are some crazy peeps out there, but a little crazy makes for some great stories.

I once moved into a place with free cable. When I told the landlord I didn’t own a TV, he said “Wait right here!” and went back to his unit and brought me a TV!
