So, I have my parents arriving tomorrow at like 5pm. We’re trying to decide if it would be better (with the roads) for them to get some sort of transportation from the airport to our house or if it will be safe enough to drive ourselves. Anyone have any good, safe suggestions?

I’m in the same boat. My mom is coming in around 11AM. Considering telling her to take a taxi ’cause they’re most likely to have chains.

that’s a good thought, we certainly don’t have chains!

LOL, I wish! I’m trying to get someone home tonight…so far, taxis w/chains not-so-much.

Well provided they either sand the streets or provide the buses with chains tomorrow, the 560 is the best way to/from the airport. Trip takes about half an hour and costs $2.25. Can’t beat that with a stick. We’ve made that trip several times and it’s a great service.

We’ll be headed to the airport in a couple hours to pick up the in-laws. I’ll report back road conditions. I’m down by 35th and Morgan.

thanks offering the report, nuni (please tell us your route when you report too!). we’re near charlestown & 53rd.

transplantella, is the bus manageable for older people with luggage?

Thanks, nuni, I’d love the report too. lg, I don’t think the bus is so great for visitors who don’t know the area, especially if a snow route may change stops, etc…jmo.

sigh. My husband needs to go to the airport tonight. The 560 bus doesn’t seem to be coming up the hill from the ferry dock (Brace Point to Barton), and if I take the car out to get him to a bus stop, I may as well drive him the whole way. But the news about Roxbury/Myers has me concerned. That is a steep grade.

I’ve got a 2008 Subaru Outback with all-wheel drive, and finely honed Midwest winter driving skills. But the Midwest didn’t teach me anything about driving on snow-covered hills…

hopey, I’m another midwesterner, who can manage the ice and snow, but is terrified of the hills too. Hills make it a whole different story.

I always use Ambassador Limo. 206-903-1221.

They will send a nice town car and wait in the luggage area with a sign for your parents. They also monitor the flight schedule, so they are always on time. It’s about $50 give or take a few bucks.

lg, I learned the hard way that the snow is VERY different here. I grew up in the Chicago area. Two or three years ago, I lived near Greenlake with a fairly flat commute. There was about an inch of snow on the road when I had to drive to work at 6am. I thought “no problem.” Was I ever wrong! I took a turn at what I thought was a safe speed (for similar conditions in Chicago), skidded out, and slammed into the curb. Took $1k to fix. The snow here is so much more wet and icy. So it’s not just the hills, the quality of the snow is very different too.

We saw the 560 come up Morgan Hill about 3:00 pm on Saturday and wondered about that. But in reading the other blog entries, it may have had to avoid Barton because of other bus problems. I’ll keep an eye out and if it’s still running up this hill, I’ll let you know.

Okay, just wanted to let you guys know that my brother in law ended up going to pick up the in laws. I’m pretty sure he’s doing the Admiral/West Seattle bridge/I-5/518W route. I’ll ask him how bad it was when he gets here.

I just got back from the Roxbury/509 route. NO PROBLEMS. Seriously. About 80% of the pavement is dry. Once out on the main streets, I did not encounter any of the thick, treacherous ice which currently blankets the side streets in my neighborhood. I had absolutely no trouble with the grade inbetween 35th and White Center. The grade between White Center and Olson Way had a bit of snow and ice on it, but only a thin layer and very manageable. The grade down to Myers Way was completely cleared and dry, as was all of 509 and 518.

The real issue seems to be getting out of the neighborhood side streets. Once you are out, it’s not a big deal.
