    BASIC FUNCTION – Assistant Teacher supports the Lead Teacher in delivering the curriculum and arts education structure. Assistant Teachers are also there to support each individual student’s emotional and physical needs and to step in as Lead Teacher when needed.

    PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES-
    Plan, create, and implement a dynamic activity two times per week for preschool age children (2 1/2- 5) that supports the Lead Teacher’s Curriculum, is in accordance with the current weekly, monthly, and artistic themes, is in keeping with the Sweet Pea Cottage philosophy, and meets the needs and promotes the growth of students in your room.

    RUNNING THE CLASSROOM
    Assist Lead Teacher in running homeroom and rotation classes Monday- Friday.
    Be Prepared to lead Circle Time and Table Toy time with students as needed.
    Be prepared to step in for Lead Teacher as needed in case of absence or emergency.
    Schedule and facilitate times for students to use the bathroom.
    Coordinate and carry out diaper changing duties within your homeroom when needed.
    Assist with snack and lunch times in your room.
    Provide safe and effective supervision for groups of students in your care at all times.
    Provide appropriate emotional and social support for each child’s development.
    Use positive guidance and discipline methods that strengthen each child’s problem- solving and conflict resolution skills.
    Maintain appropriate tone and decorum with students at all times.
    Maintain student cleanliness especially faces, noses, and hands.
    Report any student health concerns to the Site Supervisor or, if they are not available, to the Artistic Director or another Administration staff member as soon as possible.
    Assist with clean up of classroom at the end of the day and as needed.
    Communicate effectively with substitutes to complete the routines of the day and care of your students as needed.
    Help effectively utilize guests and volunteers in classroom as needed.

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

    High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
    20 Hour Basic STARS training OR 2 College credits in Basics of Child Care preferred.
    Introduction to Early Childhood Education five credit class preferred.
    Some working knowledge of child development for ages 2 1/2- 5
    At least one (1) year working in early childhood education setting with children 2 1/2- 5

    Familiarity with developmentally appropriate curriculum.
    A commitment to continued professional growth.
    Awareness and sensitivity toward different ethnic, cultural, and other diverse backgrounds.
    Excellent interpersonal communication skills both with children and adults.
    Ability to read and interpret documents such as employee handbook, safety rules, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
    Ability to pass Washington State Patrol Background Verification (including fingerprinting when requested.)
    Child CPR/ First Aid Certification (must be completed within 2 months of hire. Current certificate must be maintained for duration of employment.)
    Blood Borne Pathogens training (must be completed within 2 months of hire. Current certificate must be maintained for duration of employment.)
