SmittyParticipantHad to dig deep for this one.
Apparently MSNBC, CNN, PBS, ABC, NBC and ABC or too busy talkin’ up that ranchers stoopid comments. No calls to the DNC for comments on how this might hurt Democratics this Fall? No gotcha moments of people supporting this guy during his run for Guvner? Come on man!
April 26, 2014 at 4:59 pm #807481
Militant ModerateMemberHeck of a stretch there. I hope you didn’t hurt yourself reaching awkwardly like that!
And Cliven Bundy – He’s the hero that the GOP deserves. His only mistake was actually saying out loud what most Republicans truly believe.
April 26, 2014 at 7:00 pm #807482
SmittyParticipantHow is that a stretch? The MSM all but ignores the elected Democrat’s ignorance but spends 24/7 talkin’ up ol’ Cliven because the GOP was trumpeting his cause (not his ignorant racial belief) for a week.
It’s a perfect example of media bias.
By your response it is apparently working.
April 26, 2014 at 7:16 pm #807483
JanSParticipantSmitty…I’m a Dem, and I condemn other Dems that say crap like that. It belongs nowhere in our society. It’s reprehensible. If he wanted to make an analogy, there were plenty of others he could make.
Having said that, he is nowhere near the bigoted, American terrorist that is Cliven Bundy. I certainly hope you aren’t defending this lawbreaker in any way.
April 26, 2014 at 7:30 pm #807484
SmittyParticipantNot at all.
Just find it frustrating that the media is ALL OVER Republicans because – SOME in the GOP had attached themselves to his initial cause, yet we hear virtually nothing about an ACTUAL Democrat who says similarly ignorant things.
You can almost see them salivating over the fact that this will be used to beat the GOP over the head this Fall (to try and keep them from taking over of the Senate).
I actually suffered through Rachel the other night to see if she would spend more time on this then she did on “bridge on-ramp gate”. She did.
PS Has Christie been booted out of office yet? :~)

dobroParticipant“Just find it frustrating that the media is ALL OVER Republicans because – SOME in the GOP had attached themselves to his initial cause, yet we hear virtually nothing about an ACTUAL Democrat who says similarly ignorant things.”
So how many other Democrats jumped on board and agreed with Quinn’s reading recommendations? (He didn’t write the article, you know). How many left-leaning TV hosts put him on for several days in a row, trumpeting his ignorance? (Hint:none)
If Republicans and their propaganda stooges are dumb enough to latch onto a tax-dodging, racist, law breaking, welfare cheat like Bundy and promote him as some kind of conservative victim of the big bad government, why shouldn’t they be shown to be the fools they are?
April 26, 2014 at 11:12 pm #807486
Militant ModerateMemberFirst of all, Governor Quinn’s comments aren’t nearly to the same level’s as Bundy’s.
Second, this seems to be a common trope amongst Republicans: When confronted with issues of bigotry or racism, respond with an adolescent, “Well Democrats are racist also!!1”
As if that fixes everything and strongly inferring that, *Both parties are bad, so vote Republican.*
This is a common conservative tactic. Most often, I see this tactic employed on message boards in conjunction with reminding us all that former Democratic Senator Robert Byrd was a former Ku Klux Klan member. We’re supposed to acknowledge that the Dems are the “real” racists, and to completely forget that Byrd’s KKK membership was in the 1940s, that Southern Democrats never became Republicans in the 1980s, that he had renounced his views repeatedly throughout his career, that the NAACP praised Byrd’s legislative efforts, and that he’s been dead since 2010.
To those of us who want TWO strong, viable, and *sane* political parties, these attempts at diversion and outright refusal for merely acknowledging that the Republican Party has severe, ongoing issues regarding race is frustrating.
The Internet is chock full of photo galleries of examples of the most vile forms racism directed at President Obama at various Tea Party and GOP events; there are several GOP candidates, elected officials, and at least one favorite conservative reality show star trying to rewrite American history regarding the treatment of slaves before the Civil War; current GOP minority vote suppression efforts, conducted under the guise of combating “voter fraud;” in the last election, the GOP’s nominee for president was an active participant of a religious faith during the time that it disallowed black clergy and another GOP hopeful had a newsletter which had previously featured some despicable racial rantings; etc., etc.
The Republican Party, for whatever reason, attracts people who are racist. It would be nice if they’d acknowledge the problem and to clean their house of the crazies, instead of denying and obfuscating.

dhgParticipantgotta love it. Whenever something shocking happens to the Republicans (and it is often enough that I pre-pop my popcorn), Smitty will find a comparable from the Democrats. Only it is not quite comparable because the media pundits aren’t racing to defend the gov, we don’t see militants gathering protectively around him. We see a schmuck who shouldn’t be in office.
What makes the Bundy story really resonate with the Dems is that we’ve heard from the Republicans that there is no such thing as a free lunch. Paul Rand and Newt have gone so far as to suggest students should work the cafeteria in order to pay for subsidized lunches. We just don’t want children to ever think they can get something for free. Then Bundy comes along, demanding a free lunch for his cows, and he’s considered a true blue patriot!
April 27, 2014 at 12:23 am #807488
SmittyParticipantI’m not saying they are comparable – although they are closer than you admit AND it’s coming from a sitting Governor vs a hick.
My point is the lack of media coverage vs the absolute media BLITZ regarding dumbdumb in Nevada.
“Only it is not quite comparable because the media pundits aren’t racing to defend the gov”
Not racing to defend him? They ARE NOT COVERING IT AT ALL! That’s my point.
April 27, 2014 at 5:11 am #807489
JoBParticipantSmitty..
what Dobro said
“So how many other Democrats jumped on board and agreed with Quinn’s reading recommendations? (He didn’t write the article, you know). How many left-leaning TV hosts put him on for several days in a row, trumpeting his ignorance? (Hint:none)

dobroParticipant“My point is the lack of media coverage vs the absolute media BLITZ regarding dumbdumb in Nevada.”
So who in the media made Bundy a focal point of their show for several days in a row, keeping him in front of viewers and shoehorning him into the news cycle, actually leading this “media blitz” you refer to? Well, that would be Sean Hannity and his right wing barrel of stooges and weasels over at Fox.
There are many other things that aren’t getting coverage (net neutrality) besides a governor making a few stupid tweets and instantly withdrawing them when his stupidity is pointed out.
April 27, 2014 at 7:21 am #807491
dobroParticipantHere’s what Democrats think about Bundy…
Dear Republicans,
As a hardcore Democrat, I want you all to know that I think Cliven Bundy is absolutely awesome. You know, I totally get why you all were drawn to this guy: he says honestly and openly what you all agree with, but are too chickensh*t and dishonest to say. But make no mistake, he is your Marlboro Man as far as I’m concerned. Whenever I hear any of you say ‘small government’ or ‘low taxes’ I am going to think of Cliven Bundy. He is you and you are him.

April 27, 2014 at 2:00 pm #807492
SmittyParticipantI completely understand that the some in the GOP brought this on themselves by hailing this guy as a hero early on. I think I mentioned that above.
I just find it hard to believe that had the governor been a Republican that we would not have heard more about this retracted tweet and how it added to the GOPs problems with women and minorities. Can’t prove it though, obviously.
That said, another thing I CAN prove is that we will never, ever ,ever hear in the MSM (let alone MSNBC) that Donal Sterling is registered Democrat. However, even if by some miracle they DO, I would not be naive enough to try and link the entire party to one idiot as your friend at KoS does.
April 27, 2014 at 3:36 pm #807493
dobroParticipantI don’t think there is anyone who doesn’t realize that there are Democrats that are jerks, crooks, and racists. The difference is that these folks are not embraced by party leaders and paraded around their official propaganda outlets as victims of the mean ol’ gov’t.
Yes, Donald Sterling is clearly a racist a**h*le. Are any Dem party leaders sticking up for him and is he featured on any left-leaning TV shows as a victim of the bad, bad gov’t? And if anyone did embrace him, you’re saying Republicans wouldn’t jump at the chance to link the party to this one idiot? Naive, indeed.
April 27, 2014 at 3:42 pm #807494
metrognomeParticipantGood ole Cliven’s comments only made news because he is ripping off other hard-working, tax-paying Americans by not paying federal grazing fees that ranchers around him are paying. Add a bunch of armed domestic terrorists joining him and Faux Noise foaming at the mouth about how his resistance ‘resonates with the American people’ and anything he says makes headlines. Otherwise, he’s just another cattle rancher. Wonder if Cliven gets federal subsidies?
Fer cryin’ out loud, even that flaming liberal Glenn Beck, who owns cattle and pays grazing fees, says Cliven is wrong (btw, Beckster is leaving politics to give Hollywood liberals a run for their money by opening a studio.)
Same with the quackin’ Robertsons and their ‘patriarch’s’ similar comments. Their five minutes of fame is nearly up, except they’ll be conservative folk heroes until the Apocalypse sends them wherever.
btw, if you haven’t seen Jon Stewart’s trashing of Sean Hand-it-to-me (before the racist quotes) it is some of his best work.
April 27, 2014 at 3:44 pm #807495
dobroParticipantIn fact, President Obama, top leader of the Democratic party, just said this…
“President Barack Obama said Sunday that comments reportedly made by the owner of a U.S. pro basketball team are “incredibly offensive racist statements,” before casting them as part of a continuing legacy of slavery and segregation that Americans must confront.
“When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don’t really have to do anything, you just let them talk,” Obama said when asked to respond to the reported comments from Los Angeles Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling.”
Not really embracing him as a fellow party member and victim of the gov’t jack booted thugs, eh?
April 27, 2014 at 4:02 pm #807496
amaliaParticipantSmitty, you keep missing the point: democrats aren’t TRYING to link the entire party to this idiot – the party leaders did it themselves. Along with their bleating media sheep. We’re just watchin’ the show.
April 27, 2014 at 4:14 pm #807497
JoBParticipanti wish the show was more entertaining..
April 27, 2014 at 4:15 pm #807498
SmittyParticipantamalia, with all due respect I will not let this get turned.
The point of this post was to show that the media isn’t even mentioning the Democrat governors racist tweet.
I said several times that SOME in the GOP brought this on themselves by embracing Cliven’s initial cause. I get that. Done.
That said, the association of this guy with ALL in the GOP is ridiculous and flat out wrong.
Again, this post was not to prove that both stories should be treated equally but that the MSM is not even mentioning the other story.
If the governor who sent racist tweets was in the GOP do you REALLY think it would be non news? Come on!
April 27, 2014 at 4:20 pm #807499
Militant ModerateMemberSince the 1990s, Donald Sterling has contributed a total of $6000 to exactly two Democratic candidates; one of whom was a former NBA player and another was a candidate for governor at the time of the state where he resides.
But I’m sure that the racist NBA team owner is a diehard true believer of the party which helped elect President Barack Obama. </sarcasm>

JoBParticipantok smitty.. i went back and linked to your original link. i confess.. i didn’t before because i am lazy and it didn’t much interest me.
but i was wrong. this is a very interesting link… and the dilemna it poses is the most interesting part of it.
Do i think he went too far when he likened blacks who support the Republican party to Jews who collaborated with the Nazis? Certainly he went too far politically. And in my opinion he went too far ethically.
but .. and here is where it gets interesting… he does raise the question of why individuals collaborate with political regimes that are clearly not only against their personal best interests but against that of the ethnic/racial/sexual group they belong to.
i suspect neither side really wanted to touch that one with a ten foot pole… it’s makes everyone way way too uncomfortable.
April 27, 2014 at 7:59 pm #807502
elikapekaParticipantSorry, Smitty, you’re reaching here. I suspect one reason this didn’t get a lot of coverage is because this guy is not a national figure. Governors don’t normally make national news unless they’re playing on the national stage to make a run at something bigger, like Christie. If Jerry Brown or Andrew Cuomo had done it, it would be getting more coverage. Secondly, it wasn’t his tweet, it’s someone from his campaign. Yes, of course the buck stops with him and all that, but staffers do stupid stuff all the time. Thirdly, calling it anti-Semitic is over the top. It’s referencing an article written by somebody else who uses a very poorly chosen analogy about people who vote against their self-interest. It ended up offending people, and apologies are in order, but it doesn’t indicate to me that the guy is a racist.
Sterling? He’s not a political figure. He’s a sports figure. Who cares what his political affiliations are?
Cliven Bundy is the poster child for a movement that has its roots in the white supremacy movement, and any politician or journalist who doesn’t know that is clueless. The minute they started spouting nonsense about the county sheriff being the highest legal authority, you’re talking Posse Comitatus, which stems from the days of Reconstruction and has always been a haven for neo-Nazis and white supremacists. Anybody who’s done minimal research would have known that. So his supporters get no pass from me. They absolutely should have known that was coming.

dobroParticipant“If the governor who sent racist tweets was in the GOP do you REALLY think it would be non news? Come on!”
The problem you’re having is making an apples/oranges comparison. Nobody cares about Gov Quinn. He has no national presence, said/did something stupid that he immediately repudiated, and was not supported or endorsed in any way by Democrats or their publicity network. It’s not newsworthy.
Other than that–what elikapeka said.
April 28, 2014 at 3:48 am #807504
HMC RichParticipantCliven Bundy was not elected. Quinn was. Big difference.
Coverage will always be different between left and right. Racism is not a party platform for the Republicans. But to Republicans, it seems as if it is for the Democrats. It’s perception. Obviously reality is different from all involved and their viewpoints.
Both sides have racists jerks.
I don’t deny there are racists that are part of the Republican Party. But most republicans disagree with those people.
And the racism from the left is just as bad. And if anyone denies it, you are living in a fantasy world.
Racism is an easy wedge issue. It has been used effectively in our country through the years.
In fact Smitty, you know as well as I what the left is going to run in for November.
Racism,
War On Women
Income Inequality
Gay Marriage
Pre-School Education
Global Warming and the Environment
Being against any Koch Brothers issue
Local Issues
Did I say racism? Oh yeah, That’s right.
The Right will run on
Obamacare, Obamacare, Obamacare
Out of Control Spending,
Sluggish Economy and higher taxes
IRS, Benghazi, essentially government over reaching and not being accountable.
Weak Foreign Policy
Did I mention Obamacare?
Seems like a fairly interesting year.
Yes, Hannity and others jumped on the Cliven Bundy stage coach and now they regret it. Serves them right. Even media that is one sided needs to stop coddling people like the Bundy’s, Politicians, and media whores.
But I suppose it wouldn’t be as fun either.
