Responsible to: Preschool Board/ClassAlki Co-Op, a play-based preschool is seeking an experienced early childhood, outdoor educator who will facilitate the outdoor day for the 2023-24 school year. The outdoor educator will support the Co-op to bring quality outdoor, nature-based programming located in Lincoln Park, a beautiful forested park in West Seattle. Our ideal candidate has a genuine love for young children, a deep, personal connection to nature, and shares the values of the Alki Co-op.
Start Date: September 2023
Schedule: 2.5 hours per week from September thru May, Thursdays 11:30-2:00
Salary: $200/class. Pay includes additional flexible hours for planning.Description/Responsibilities:
-Provide a nurturing and responsive outdoor learning environment rooted in respectful relationships with children, parents and teaching team.
-Dedication to place-based emergent curriculum and a passion for exploring the natural environment. Working knowledge of local flora, fauna, and seasonal changes is a plus!
-Ensure the safety of all children including but not limited to nature play, hiking, climbing or while in close proximity to such things as standing water, streams, and other terrain.
-Ensure the daily preparation of our nature classroom and seasonal projects.
-Provide experiences that promote children’s development and learning that are individually focused and developmentally appropriate.
-Contribute to an inclusive and accepting learning environment by encouraging students to ask questions, develop empathy, and build self esteem.
-Offer children a safe environment to learn new skills, navigate their emotions, and cultivate meaningful relationships.
-Loves working with young children and is energetic and passionate about connecting one-on-one with children, as well as working with groups of children, and their caregivers.
-Communicate with parents effectively, in person, by phone, or e-mail regarding the program and the progress of their child.
Supports and encourages parents in their role as assistant teachers within the outdoor classroom.Qualifications:
Degree in early childhood education, elementary education, child development, child psychology and/or outdoor/nature education
Experience working with young children ages 0-5 in an early care setting, preschool, or childcare.
Knowledge of forestry, environmentalism, conservation, other nature based wisdom
Physically capable of performing teaching duties with enthusiasm regardless of the weather (rain, sleet, snow, heat) including the ability to walk distances and over uneven terrain, carry a backpack and supplies, and lift up to 50lbs.
Understanding of the benefits of risk taking, movement, and physical development in the early years.
CPR/First Aid certified or willingness to obtain
