I have a lace leaf maple shrub. about 5 1/2 ft tall x 7 ft wide. Really healthy but neglected from a pruning standpoint. Afraid to tackle the job myself. Had a certified arborist give an estimate for $300. I so respect their expertise but I can’t afford that. Anyone know of any good pruners short of the certified arborist route ?

If you are able to do it and have a sharp set of pruners, see the above article for some excellent guidance. If you’re neither able to do it or do not have the tools, maybe contact a neighbor who has a well-shaped lace leaf in their yard and ask if they’ll share the name/number of their yard worker. At my previous home, it was not unusual for us to have someone come to the door and inquire about our landscape work. Good luck!

Wade, a local free-lance pruner did a great job on our front bushes and trees. He’s reasonably priced, too. 206 724-5683

Try getting recommendations from Plant Amnesty, or reference a good article like the one Breezy mentioned. Please don’t allow a “landscaper” – especially a door-to-door one – anywhere near your Japanese maple. Aside from removing dead branches, these trees need minimal pruning, and irreparable harm could be done by the wrong hands. Whatever you do, don’t allow anyone to trim off the bottom branches in a straight line, or use a power tool of any kind. These trees are meant to be asymmetrical, so if it’s “healthy” it may not need anything. It’s a myth that trees need to be regularly “trimmed” (the word makes me shudder).

Hey KK50, Give us a call…our arborist Andrew loves doing laceleaf maples, is great at it, and

will work with you as far as how much time you want spent on it. From the sound of it, 2 hours should be sufficient to do the pruning on a laceleaf that size, which would be more like $150 than $300, if you’re willing to do the cleanup after especially. He can cut the branches up small enough to fit in your yardwaste bin. We’re at 206-763-7625 or
