Caduceus..
i really want to go there with you.. but the thing is that i have already been there.. done that.. and got my own FBI file for arguing with some of the guys who advocated actual revolution in my misbegotten youth …
Yes, the system is corrupt. It has always been corrupt.
it sounds as though you have read some history…. i’d love to hear about any system that exists or once existed that was not corrupt.
It hurts my heart to hear you push the responsibility for disaster preparedness and disaster relief on those who were most affected by Katrina.
Should the people on the interstate hiway bridge in Minneapolis have also advocated for safer bridges?
The levy failure and the bridge collapse fall under the same umbrella…. America’s crumbling infrastructure. Both projects were federal projects.. both the levy and the bridge were known to be at high risk for failure… they are the results of deferred maintainance… of a combination of lower taxes on the rich, diversion of tax subsidies to corporations and to funding the Iraq war… not entirely republican responsibility.
FEMA however, is another story.. unique to the Bush administration. The failure at FEMA was directly related to making the leadership at FEMA a political appointment and to gutting the agency to divert funds and resources to a Homeland Security department which has yet to do much more than spy on citizens and hinder air travel.
And that political move is a direct consequence of young voter apathy in the last presidential election. People like you who.. who likely would have voted for the lesser evil of a democratic president.. but didn’t want to contribute to a corrupt system… or just didn’t think it mattered.
It matters. One of the two candidates for President is going to set policy in the administration.. the part of the government that provides services.. and that policy is going to affect how well those services are provided to you.
You might want to have a say in whether or not FEMA is returned to the prepared disaster relief agency it once was.. after all, we live in both a known earthquake zone and a known volcanic zone…
or the EPA is required to prosecute violators of environmental law.. or…. the list is literally endless.
the elections aren’t just about what politician will sit in what seat.. or which party will win… but about what services you can rely on from your government…
That’s something you might want to have a say in…

momof2MemberI am a patient of Dr. Kari Chellis. I have had a lot of dental work done at many other offices. She is by far the best dentist I have ever been to. She is very very gentle and her shots do not hurt at all. What I like about her is that she is only seeing you when you have an appointment. She is not getting up to see other patients. I feel at home here and like she cares about my mouth. She is expensive, but worth it. You get what you pay for. I highley recommend her to anyone looking to invest the best for their mouth. She is located in the Jefferson Square uilding. What I liek is that she opens up at 7am so I liek to go before work. Also her staff is amazing. They are so sweet. Its like visiting your best friend. After experiencing their customer service I get very upset when I dont get treated the same at other places(dr’s,stores,restaraunts,etc..)

JoBParticipantCaduceas…
I will give you that Hitler got results for a while..
but most of his ability to get things done had little to do with inspiration.. and a great deal to do with pandering to prejudice, exploiting the resentment in postwar Germany from losing the fist war and the lack of economic opportunity following it, indoctrination of children and intimidation.
and ultimately. he didn’t deliver on his biggest campaign promise.. german supremacy.
I suppose the same could be said for Stalin… although ultimately that didn’t turn out so well for him either… or Mussolini or even Saddam…
There is a huge difference between inspiration and the way that despots inflame prejudice… exploit resentment and intimidate to gain power over citizens.
whether that power is used for good or evil has little to do with the process by which one gains influence.

RickBMemberAnother place this kind of thing happens is at the Western St. exit from the northbound 99 viaduct. In the morning it’s almost always backed up for a good long while before the exit, and people are always driving all the way up to the front and then cutting in. The dangerous thing in that situation is the sudden slowdown in the second-rightmost lane could cause a rearender accident…

CaduceusMemberI see where you’re coming from JoB, but all the problems you have stated could have been more easily solved by unity of the people.
For example the victims of Katrina knew they were in a hurricane zone, and they knew their levees needed fixing. They aren’t strangers to the damage a hurricane can bring and there are an infinite number of possibilities that could have been wielded to force those levees to be fixed in order to protect their lives and their well-being.
Which is where my statement about a more preferable society comes in.
Perfection is something Nature itself has been working on for quite some time, so it isn’t likely everyone is just going to get over the basic flaws in human nature.
Perhaps in a better society fraud wouldn’t be so looming if “internet voting” were established (although in my previous post I was simply referencing the concept of simplicity, not necessarily the internet). And if we established severe punishments for things like that, it would deter people from doing it.
How much more likely would someone be to take part in fraud if the consequence of being caught was death, or something more extreme. Compared to a fine and jail time with the opportunity to get leave on parole.
Granted I’m being painfully idealistic but I just don’t understand how electing someone in the hopes that they do what we want them to do rather than us just coming together and doing them ourselves.
Violence in general is seen as “primitive” and “barbaric”.
6. damage through distortion or unwarranted alteration
Our government does this all the time, and we’re simply supposed to put someone else in an office to fix all of our problems?
If their property, investments and much more extremely, their lives were in jeopardy I’m sure their tunes would change much more quickly then every 4 years.
If a bully takes a kid’s lunch money everyday, and the teacher never does anything directly about it and the problem persists what options does the kid have? Find a new teacher, one who may or may not be consistent with discipling the bully, which may or may not even be effective to begin with?
And what if said kid gets like-minded individuals together and out number the bully 20 to 1 and exclaim that the consequences of his cruelty may possibly include bodily harm, do you think he’ll persist then?
And perhaps the bully then tells a teacher, and the teacher goes to discipline the students. What if then the rest of the students stand behind them, supporting their “cause”.
They aren’t going to discipline every student, give them all detentions, suspensions or expel them all. Everything would be at risk, everything the teachers control and take part in from the academic standards, to their pay, to the children even being enrolled at all.
The teachers would take the simplest most effective route which would be a fair passive approach to the situation.
And if that didn’t happen and the teachers called a bluff, all it would take is for the students to act.
The example is a far stretch from the complexity of the real world but the bold outline is the same.
And it would also take a massive social jolt to even bring this about to begin with but it isn’t impossible.
I just do not understand the point in having an overly-complex, and hypocritical government when all that it’s there for is to solve our problems for us.
I am not proposing we should all be anarchists and blow things up.
I just don’t see why voting to support a flawed system that seems to be breaking more things than it’s fixing is worthwhile.
And maybe Obama will charge headstrong into change, and totally rearrange the face of America. Or maybe he’s a politician trying to be elected, only time will tell.
But this system is too deeply flawed to last for very long, it’s already steadily declining downhill as presidents are trying to give themselves more power throughout the decades.
Eventually people will wake up, and they won’t be starving themselves, or hanging themselves in their garages at the age of 12, or putting racial slurs in every other sentence, or shooting up schools because their mental will couldn’t last a lifetime of ridicule, people won’t be conned into buying a $500 purse that only costs $15 to make, and people will realize that diamonds aren’t worth the money in gas it took to get to the jewelry store, and eventually people will lose the capacity to needlessly hate and things will change and there won’t be a place for such a flawed and biased system.
So why put up with it now, why don’t we just get a headstart on change?
Note: I am aware it takes more than impulse to accomplish what I speak of, which is why I’m emphasizing unity as a whole, and as a nation and the growth of us as a nation into a more constructive and positive one. I am not under-estimating what I’m speaking of, although I am generalizing a bit since I’ve already written a novel here. :P
Everyone just seems so over-all content with such a flawed system that causes them so much grief, and everyone acts like it isn’t their problem to inspire change in other individuals and we should all hopelessly wait for someone else to do it.
I guess I see supporting this segregated party, branched government system as back-peddling. And I don’t understand how someone can see it any other way.
Again I mean no offense, which is why I’m asking to be educated so I can understand where you are all coming from as individuals. I do not mean to imply that if you support our current government that you are inferior to anyone else or anything like that. I am just explaining where I am coming from so we are able to have a more personal and informative discussion.

AlParticipantYes! This intersection is a nightmare and will only get worse in the near future (think Viaduct construction). Writing to SDOT about the signal timing is the best thing we can do, because we all know that SDOT and the City are thinking about how the Viaduct work will impact W. Seattle, right (snark)?
I sometimes stop while taking a right down Avalon because the sight line turning right is blocked by the barrier and it’s hard to see if there’s stopped traffic heading onto the bridge or not. And people, there’s a crosswalk there, it’s illegal to block a crosswalk even if there’s no one in it. Just because someone is stopped at a green coming down Avalon does not give you the right to take a left – it just means you have to WAIT and YIELD to the right turner because they have the right of way so long as their light is still green.

August 7, 2008 at 10:02 am #587707JoelVMemberHi folks! My girlfriend and I had been neighborhood-hunting for a while, visited WS last weekend, and now (in what seems an all-too-familiar turn of events for this blog) we’re apartment-hunting. The many young families out and about in the early evening, the cleanliness of the air, and the distinct lack of broken glass on the streets seemed idyllic when compared to our present digs on the outskirts of frat row in Ravenna, and we couldn’t help noticing that almost everyone we met or saw was so plain ol’ nice. It didn’t feel like we were in Seattle anymore.
Part of the reason we’re moving is that neighborhood difference, but the other part is the black mold that infests our present address. It’s in the walls. It sprouts up under our towels. It’s disgusting and makes us sickish almost all the time. So, to that end…
What we need: 600 square feet of secure housing that is as free of black mold as can be found north of Alaska and west of 35th Ave that can be rented for $1100 per month or less.
Nonobvious things that we would like: Proximity to bus lines and groceries. The ability to adopt and keep a small dog (we *don’t* have any pets now). Proximity to parks, swimming pools, or other community recreation spots. A small garden.
I guess that’s about it. Whether y’all can help us or not, thanks for creating and maintaining a wonderful online forum.

acemotelParticipantMaybe you’re thinking of this:
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/118731_protest23.html
when one of Kingen’s other ventures failed and disgruntled employees picketed Salty’s because they had not been paid. Kingen was one of several partners to that venture, a casino in SeaTac.
Also in 2003 Salty’s was late on a tax bill and tried to sue the IRS, but that suit was dismissed.
In the last three or four years, a number of class actions suits have been filed against Red Robin for labor violations (in California); I believe they have just recently been settled. Although as someone mentioned above, apparently Kingen is no longer involved in that company.

The writer observes that the populace is made up of “lineuppers” and “sidezoomers” (aka “Cheaters” and “Vigilantes”) and analyzes the results of those tendencies in her local snarl in California. As has been mentioned before the newly named West Seattle Crime Prevention Council and Jennifer at the Seattle Neighborhood Group are good resources.
Here is another idea that a friend of mine calls Back-At-You.
Look up the address of the owners on the King County Maps website http://www.metrokc.gov/gis/mapportal/PViewer_main.htm
Have a tailgate party outside their house. Park a clunker/junk, but licensed and legal, art car with proper decor outside their home. Move it just before the 72 hour rule kicks in. Do this over and over. Make a ruckus. Make them feel your pain.
Could be they live in the same manner as their tenants which in that case the above ideas might need modification.

KenParticipantCurrent propaganda efforts that remind you of the insanity detailed in “the hunting of a president”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hunting_of_the_President
ie: the “Clinton Body Count” insanity.
Republican will claim these are from the fringes and yet… we can be sure some of our neighbors believe them with the same fervor they believed the previous decades demonization.
When the entire party is taken over by the fringes, it’s time to get out if you are brave enough to use your own brain.
http://www.sadlyno.com/archives/10015.html
Her is an excerpt from the current crazies email
GANDY BAUGH – Attorney for Obama friend Antonin Rezko died by falling out an eightieth story window of the Hancock Tower, January, 2003. His client was a convicted Chinese spy.
and one from the Clinton Body Count:
Gandy Baugh jumped out of a window of a multi-story building and died on January 8, 1994. Published reports say he was defending a man named Dan Lassater in a financial misconduct case. Lassater was an associate of Bill Clinton’s who was convicted of cocaine distribution.
And snopes sez:
http://www.snopes.com/politics/clintons/bodycount.asp
Gandy Baugh died on 8 January 1994 at home. Although causes weren’t specified, it’s safe to assume people who jump out of tall buildings either die on the spot or in the hospital, not at home.
Also note the snopes link explains the stupidity step by step of the original CBC email smear.
From Snopes:
This Clinton “body count” list is not a new phenomenon multiple versions have been circulating for years. New victim names are routinely added and old ones taken off, forming an endless variety of permutations. At this point, there is no one “official” list.
But where did all this craziness start? In 1994, in a letter to congressional leaders, former Rep. William Dannemeyer listed 24 people with some connection to Clinton who had died “under other than natural circumstances” and called for hearings on the matter.
Dannemeyer’s list of “suspicious deaths” was largely taken from one compiled by Linda Thompson, an Indianapolis lawyer who in 1993 quit her year-old general practice to run her American Justice Federation, a for-profit group that promotes pro-gun causes and various conspiracy theories through a shortwave radio program, a computer bulletin board, and sales of its newsletter and videos.

WSBKeymasterBelatedly reading this thread – I’ve seen this story all too many times in just our past year and a half or so of tracking development. There was a sad little lesson in this somewhat similar story from June of last year:
https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=1832
There are so many teardowns-to-townhomes still in progress, I can’t guess which is yours by reading this, but if you wouldn’t mind me looking it up to put on our watch list, please e-mail me at
Meantime, anyone contemplating any kind of move anywhere at any time would be strongly urged to read absolutely every shred of available background on the property, whether you are selling or renting. Sounds like that might have prevented this situation – permits are often applied for long before those yellow signs go up. To check any address in Seattle, for permits/complaints present or past,
http://web1.seattle.gov/DPD/permitstatus/
To check the property ownership history, use the King County Parcel Viewer
http://www.metrokc.gov/gis/mapportal/Pviewer_main.htm
If you’re thinking about renting an apartment complex, always worth checking to make sure it’s not up for sale. Not all commercial/multifamily properties get publicly listed, I’ve learned, but I keep an eye on this site and report WS complexes up for sale – ones with more than a few units, anyway – when they are posted, because of having heard so many times about tenants being the last to know (in this search engine, choose multifamily in the top group and West Seattle in market area):
http://www.commercialmls.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=property.searchFS
meantime … good luck finding a new residence fast!

Sorry to hear that your visit was so unpleasant. We ate there in June and had a wonderful dinner. The service was good and we enjoyed the lovely placesettings, and attmosphere. My complaint with many of the new resturants are the crappy table and chairs..we had a bench seat at Springhill that night but noticed the table and chairs looked very uncomfortable to enjoy a nice time out (2hrs). Anyone else find this annoying? La Rustica is another with terrible seating,(unless your outdoors on a beautiful night) and Ama Ama has great booths but their table and chairs are treadful! We haven’t gone back to Springhill yet but we’ll definitly try it again and I’ll pay attention to your comments.

August 5, 2008 at 12:09 am #587685Topic: What to do about sketchy neighbors
in forum Open DiscussionHappyPetsMemberI was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about dealing with a neighbor who is allegedly dealing drugs out of the apartment. Personally, what people do in their apartment is really none of my concern, but it is waking me up in the middle of the night, it’s outside my door, and it is making my other neighbors (who have also had enough) worried. It is now my problem, as well as our neighbors. These visitors have already ripped off our neighbor who is allegedly dealing, and we are worried they could cause other problems in our building. Luckily, there is no way to climb in my windows, but unfortunately that is not the case for some of my neighbors, and I feel they are in more danger than I am (I live with my boyfriend and dog). Our Landlord has spoken with him, but wants us to call the police anytime we see any suspicious activity. Does anyone know the best way to go about this? Calling 911 seems a little excessive (maybe if there were shots fired, but it has not been that out of control…yet).
