    Before suggesting how the SPD should best use their time, I’d first suggest that people obey the laws. If people would just act more responsibly the police department would have more time to focus on serious crimes.

    The permit holder for construction there is the owner of Whistle Workwear so I’m betting on one of their stores.

    you are right – planting strip, not parking strip. You know…. say between Anchor Park and Pepperdocks (but not that far either way, just not sure what the house numbers are) where the houses are, not the condo/apartments. People park on the planting strip, sometimes vertically and sometimes horizontally. No one parks behind/next to their cars on the street but it seems to me the street is a legitimate area to park.

    Topic: American theocracy

    in forum Politics

    One of my friends, with whom I truly enjoy sharing a libation or talking about sports or travel or etc., but can not hold a civil conversation about religion or politics, sent off one of his facebook blasts that just have me wanting to choke the guy. It is the usual talking-point crapola about how providing the most modest, basic level of health care for her citizenry is certainly NOT the intent of the founders for this Nation of ours, and how it will be the ruination of freedom and liberty and all we hold dear and government can’t operate ANY venture as efficiently as the private sector and too much regulation of business this and too much intrusion that….

    And then, almost immediately and apparently completely without irony, sent another invective about the evils perpetrated on fetuses (he used another term) by women, who OBVIOUSLY don’t have the emotional capacity to make these kind of decisions for themselves with the guidance of a board certified medical doctor qualified in the relevant field of medicine, and went on to make various biblical references and talking about the evil perpetrated on God’s tiny little in utero miracle and the need to bring the weight of the GOVERNMENT in to halt this abomination, and no single person should have the right to make that decision for another and that we should put an end to it (apparently relegating women to the role of man and God’s handmaiden).

    It really WAS just that back and forth, all the while completely oblivious to the contradictions taking place in back-to-back sentences.

    So I decided to throw int he towel. He’s right, God and the Church should make the rules for this great, secular Nation of ours, and since I am as qualified as anyone else and more so than many to make this call, in my own mind, I have decided the United States of America should be a Unitarian Universalist theocracy.

    Here is the website for your new “official” moral compass America. Be sure to commit it to memory; we don’t want to PO God:

    http://www.uua.org/visitors/6798.shtml

    There are seven principles which Unitarian Universalist congregations affirm and promote:

    The inherent worth and dignity of every person;

    Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;

    Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;

    A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;

    The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;

    The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;

    Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

    Unitarian Universalism (UU) draws from many sources:

    Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;

    Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love;

    Wisdom from the world’s religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life;

    Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God’s love by loving our neighbors as ourselves;

    Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit.

    Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.

    These principles and sources of faith are the backbone of our religious community.

    There you go. It did use scary words and terms like justice and equity and compassion and acceptance and “democratic process” which may take some getting used to, but you have no say in this. Someone had to decide the official State Theocracy, SO I DID. Deal with it.

    My take…and my take only. It’s not JUST a racism thing, it’s a hate thing. Racism is part of it, and it played out in that instance. But, the hate is what gets me. Yesterday, in the heat of it all, someone yelled out “Baby killer”…of course, there’s a spin on it now, and the gentleman from Texas has apologized : http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/22/randy-neugebauer-revealed_n_508525.html

    Oh, yeah, I said “it’s a baby killer” referring to the bill, not the person speaking”…yeah, that’s the ticket. We will have to believe him, but I can bet you that after it was said, there was a scramble as to who could come up with the best “excuse” to downplay this. Maybe we just need to tape their mouths shut.

    This country has come so far in so many things, yet..not…and it’s so very sad.

    The Admiral junction (ie. Admiral/California Ave) is surrounded by lovely housing AND has highly regarded schools. So if you’re going public, there doesn’t seem to be any advantage in moving further South.

    Anyway, for what it’s worth, below is my input about researching schools. My child is starting kindergarten this Fall, so all of the below is based on my own investigation. I apologize if none of this is helpful to you.

    I have heard that Sanislo is diverse & has an excellent art teacher, but the neighborhoods around this school are less attractive than those in North West Seattle (fyi, I live near Sanislo). The school looks a bit dumpy on the outside, but is filled with art on the inside.

    I am unsure which (or if particular) West Seattle public schools have a leg up on diversity and creativity. Any difference between schools may be reflected in $ obtained through the PTA (since curriculum in standardized), so for a strong arts program, you may want to search for a school with an involved parental community. The option school, Pathfinder, may fit the diversity/creativity bill, but the deadline for enrollment is March 31, 2010. Enrollment is granted to applicants based on a lottery system. If you currently live in Seattle somewhere else, have you submitted an enrollment application OR do you intend to prior to Mar 31st? If not, then an option school is not possible for your family in Fall 2010.

    Our local elementary schools in the North West Seattle quadrant (including Admiral Junction): Lafayette, Schmitz park, Alki, West Seattle Elementary. West Seattle is considered a “failing school” by WASL standards, by the way (though maybe not in diversity/creativity? don’t know). Lafayette is considered to be an excellent school based on both standardized tests & having an involved parent community, but it may not be creative/diverse (don’t know, I’m sure parents will chime in)

    map/websites:

    http://www.seattleschools.org/area/m_schools/westseattlenorth.html

    Our local elementary schools in the South West Seattle quadrant: Arbor Heights, Concord, Gatewood, Highland Park, Roxhill, and Sanislo

    map/websites:

    http://www.seattleschools.org/area/m_schools/westseattlesouth.html

    Our local middle schools (6th-8th grade): Madison (in North region) and Denny (in South region).

    A great way to get a feel for these schools (and I again apologize if you already know all this):

    1) do a name search in the West Seattle blog forum, for there are many opinions already written in this blog;

    2) search for info on websites:

    school profiles (diversity, scores) — look at individual schools, both their websites and “Annual Reports”:

    http://www.seattleschools.org/area/m_schools/index.dxml

    parental input:

    Since we all seem to be starting from entrenched beliefs and since many of these beliefs relate to varying interpretations of our Constitution (incl the first 10 amendments) and Declaration of Independence, I thought it might be useful to start from scratch, sort of.

    So, how would our country be different if …

    – there were Founding Mothers and Founding Brothers (and Sisters, etc.) in addition to Founding Fathers? (I understand this is highly unlikely at this time in history; for the sake of discussion, assume that it was in fact possible.)

    – Specifically, what would have been different? Would slavery have been allowed? Would women and non-white citizens have been able to vote from the outset? How would Amdmt 1 (freedom of religion, press and expression) and Amdmt 2 (‘a well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed’) be different?

    http://www.usconstitution.net/const.html seems to be a useful, non-partisan resource.

    ‘Partisan’ answers are fine as long as they are civil. I hope I don’t need to define that. Depending on the answers and the civility and respectfulness of the anwers, there may be more questions (that means I am unwilling to perpetuate the ‘its ok for me to do it because he did it first’ conversations that dominate public discourse today. Sister David Francis would have rapped my knuckles with a ruler for such specious logic.)

    I don’t condemn these dupes for the fairly large number of backwards, racist types in their “movement”, I condemn them for the ignorant, fearful, and selfish agenda they support, at the bidding of their corporate bosses.

    Anarchism AND Libertarianism are BOTH idiotic movements. Humans haven’t evolved far enough to be able to live under only the dictates of fairness and morality, nor are we capable of achieving equatability in all of our interactions, so personal resentment is inescapable.

    Maybe in a few hundred millennia.

    A young man in my family admitted in front of his parents a few years ago that during high school he exchanged his worn wallet for a new one at a local department store.

    his parents shook their head and talked to him about what would have happened had he been caught but said nothing about his theft.

    recently this same young man… who is now an adult applying for a job of public trust… made a comment about how he saw that theft.. he thought the store was wrong for charging $30 for the wallet he still carried.

    this is someone i love dearly but no longer really respect:(

    worse than that… if this is his attitude towards the theft of a wallet.. i wonder what else he thinks is ok.

    i worry about a society where the attitude that you deserve what you can take…

    that speaking up when you are wronged is whining…

    that a few dollars doesn’t really matter…

    i worry about where that attitude is taking us…

    so yes.. i make a big deal out of things like this when i see others treating the person who reports it badly…

    rationalizing treating the Op badly

    and defending not contacting a customer when they report a discrepancy on their bill on the basis that the owner is too busy or it’s too little money to worry about.

    i wish i had made a bigger deal out of it the first time i saw evidence of this double standard emerging in this young man’s home.

    and now he is a young man

    who is likely to be faced with ethical choices

    he clearly isn’t prepared to make…

    i kept my mouth shut..

    it wasn’t my business..

    no big deal:(

    it’s a bigger deal than we know

    and one that each of us often faces in some way as we interact with our community..

    middle of the night.. sleepless.. said more than i would in the daylight.. but still i think… worth thinking about.

    Everyone I know is feeling the same way. After years of fighting against the abuses of the Bush administration, we dared to entertain hope for change…for about five minutes. Many of us who were very politically active are now at a complete loss as to what to do next. What’s left? We protested, we wrote, called, blogged, marched – and we voted. To no avail: the fix is in.

    It would take a major uprising of the American people to bring about change at this point, and I just don’t see it happening. I don’t have Medicare because I can’t afford it, and it doesn’t cover the so-called alternative treatments that I rely on and pay cash for. Now I’m going to be fined for being low-income and unable to afford any form of health insurance. Unbelievable.

    #690389
    JoB
    Participant

    KBear..

    and how exactly do you expect them to be able to fix what’s wrong with it?

    going in we know that it is wrong to give health insurance companies captive customers without regulation.. but there is no regulation in this bill and most members of congress have said that it is impossible to regulate health care insurance.

    i don’t know why.. we regulate auto insurance… and every other developed country that relies on a health insurance model regulates health insurance.

    ours are even exempt from anti-trust laws.

    we know it is wrong to let health insurance companies make health care decisions for us.. yet in the state of california.. the only state where this information is tracked.. insurance companies deny doctor ordered care 20% of the time.

    It only makes sense that as the cost for procedure rises the percentage of denials rises dramatically… but they don’t track those numbers…. and those numbers are the ones that will literally kill you.

    This is a bad plan for covering health care for Americans.. and if you don’t believe me look at how happy it made wall street when kucinich caved yesterday…

    if health insurance lobbyists are so important now that they can make secret deals with the white house to keep even the compromise position of public option out of the bill.. what makes you think the situation is going to change now that they can dump unlimited buckets of money at congressional campaigns?

    Do you really think they are going to approve limiting their income? Because that is the business they are in.. making money.. not providing health care.

    The health care bill we get now will be what we are stuck with for at least my lifetime and i am guessing quite a while beyond.

    Right now our insurance companies decide what doctors we can see and what treatments we can have.

    I would like someone to explain to me exactly why letting a business who is in business to give me the cheapest care possible whether it endangers my life or not make my health care decisions is so much better than letting the government make those same decisions…

    don’t kid yourself that this bill will be improved later… this is not the starting point but the ending point…

    It’s a crock.. and once we have bought this crock we will be stuck with it.

    be careful what you let them sell you.

    I share the disappointment in this administration’s failure to accomplish anything meaningful on health care reform. I remember thinking, back before Obama was a candidate, that our system had transformed over time into basically a one-party system, not in the sense that Ds and Rs had entirely the same agenda, but in the sense that the Ds had moved so far to the center that the progressive end of the spectrum had lost any real voice in DC. And I certainly jumped on the Obama bandwagon and got my hopes back up for true reforms in health care, criminal justice, social justice, privacy, Guantanamo, blah blah blah. Now I’ve reverted to where I was a few years ago: I preserve my sanity by mostly ignoring DC and national politics, and I focus on the things one person, or a few, really can do in this community where I live. Think small, think local, and contribute what you can.

    Months ago, I started chemotherapy and anticipated losing my hair, so I decided to beat it to the punch by getting a buzz. Didn’t want to do it myself, and didn’t want to spend a lot of money, so I just dropped in to Budget Cuts, as I pass by there frequently. As luck would have it, Tram was available. I told her about starting chemo and she said, “leave it to me, I know just what to do.” For the first time in a very long time, I totally surrendered to a stylist, since even if it looked crappy, it was going to fall out anyway, right? Without my asking, Tram buzzed the back and sides of my already fairly short style, but styled and left the top longer, and told me an all-over buzz was pretty drastic at the time. Long story short, I didn’t lose my hair! At least not the majority of it. While noticeably thinner to me, no one else I know saw much difference, except for the cut, which was totally AWESOME. I’ve always been something of a hair “snob,” wearing pretty cutting edge styles and paying through the nose at high-profile salons for the privilege. I can honestly say the way Tram cut the top of my hair was absolute perfection! It’s taken many, many months for my slow-growing (due to chemo) hair to grow out enough to need another cut, but I just made an appointment for this afternoon, and can’t wait to get a fresh new cut from Tram. Thank you Budget Cuts and Tram; you’re a gift to West Seattle.

    Hi everyone,

    We are trying to organize a cooperative preschool to be housed at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center beginning in the 2010-2011 school year that enphasises the arts, diversity, individuality, conservation, and inclusiveness. We have a preliminary commitment for space at Youngstown beginning in August, 2010, and now it is time to figure out who is interested in participating in this new coop!

    Here is what the preliminary parameters might be for an endeavor like this:

    Your toddler will be at least 24 months by August, 2010, and no older than 4.5 years old by August 2010 (Acceptions for younger students will be made on a case by case basis).

    You are interested in volunteering in the coop on a regular basis (the volunteer positions and duration of them will be decided by the coop board)

    You are potentially interested in belonging to the coop board, which will need to meet online and in-person on a regular basis to bring together the particulars of the coop

    Here are the meeting particulars:

    Saturday, March 20th, 2010 @ 10:00 a.m.

    Mosaic Community Coffeehouse – in the demitasse room (kids playroom)

    4401 2nd Avenue Northeast, Seattle, WA

    They have coffee, tea, and pastries there which can be purchased by donation (it’s a community, not for profit coffeehouse). I will bring some extra treats as well. PLEASE BRING YOUR LITTLE! We can have a play date!

    This will be an informal meet and greet to try to ascertain the level of interest and participation from the community. Please RSVP to blackbirdrosie1973@gmail.com. If you can’t make it but would still be interested in participating, please contact me by email and let me know your level of interest. Board members are encouraged! We have a lot of fun stuff to get done this spring and summer to get ready!

    Yay!

    I bought my car at Chaplin’s Subaru and had no problems as well. And they offered me a decent price on my trade-in, which made me super happy, given that it needed some work.

    I do bring my car to Carter Subaru for service and am always amazed that it takes an hour to do an oil change. The last time I brought it in I had the first appointment of the day at 7:00 and they didn’t finish with my car until 8:15. I swear they forgot about it until I returned from my run. Nice. I’ll still keep going there since they have the best service deals for Subaru dealers and the people working there are nice.
