Oh, funny, I may actually have a different issue than the OP! Just for background, the parking lot at Ian Fitness is small and oddly-configured: the part that fronts on California is shallow and the part that fronts on Juneau is just weird, plus hilly, and it’s hard to tell where you’re supposed to park. The lot fills up fast when there’s a class; also, the shallow California-fronting part of the lot is not deep enough for larger vehicles to park head-in without blocking the sidewalk. There’s nothing wrong with parking in front of or close to the place you’re going as long as you’re parking safely and legally. The customers at this business routinely do things like:

    – parking head-in even though their car can’t fit without blocking the sidewalk (illegal, and unsafe because it forces anyone using the sidewalk–which in that neighborhood includes, based on my direct observation, folks using strollers, wheelchairs, and knee scooters–into the driveway or the street)
    – parking head-in but not pulling in far enough, so that they’re blocking the sidewalk anyway, even though their car would fit if they would pull forward just a TINY bit more
    – parking on the street next to a driveway and not leaving enough space for other cars to enter or exit safely–I’m talking right up to the edge of the curb cut, when five feet is what’s required. And it’s not just IanFitness’s driveway but the driveway of the apartment building next door, the driveway of Juneau Market across the street, and often the alley as well

The thing that’s funny to me about this is the insistence on parking (illegally, unsafely, inconsiderately) so close to a crossfit class when there’s usually PLENTY of street parking within 2-3 blocks. Some of it does involve walking up a very minor grade, but if you’re headed to a crossfit class I would think that would just count as a bonus warm-up! And I have no way of knowing for sure, but besides the apparent unwillingness to walk, my guess is that some people would prefer to park illegally rather than park in front of a house because they perceive that as rude.

Okay, that started as a clarification and turned into a full-on rant! I walk by this place five days a week on my way home from the bus, and if there’s a class in session it’s rare for there to be a day when one or more of these things isn’t happening, so I guess this has been building up for a while. Guess I’d better send the business a link to this thread now so that they get their chance to make things right by encouraging their customers to be more neighborly!

As my user name states…Us too, our next door neighbor will go out into their front yard the dog follows and then runs directly for our yard and or parking strip and leaves us a great big “present” and all they do is yell for the dog then a few days later sometimes, sometimes they’ll go around with their bucket and scoop and look for his poop…A REALLY just don’t let the dog run loose!!!

I agree, I’ve serviced that area for many years with my mobile mechanic business and many of my long-time customers in Arbor Heights have brought it up as an issue… I’m all about safety first, but seems like these SDOT projects are just about filling quotas and using up taxpayer money rather than doing the job right the first time. Look at how little effort goes into repairing our local roads after a condo goes in and they rip the streets up with heavy equipment like cranes, or dig the a hole in the street for utilities and then shovel a mound of asphalt on top of it like that is going to last more than 6 months before it becomes a huge crevice or pothole. This city needs to step up to the plate or the yellow vests will be hitting the streets soon.

I vote no to more pizza! I think it’s great that you’re asking for input. And I get the desire to offer something you love from home. What’s the count of places you can get pizza starting from the north at mioposto down to peel & press? I’m thinking 12? plus metropolitan market and PCC when it reopens. I wish you the best, starting a business is a huge undertaking of time, money, I’m sad when a new place closes when it’s obvious the business was not planned out well. The SBA, small business association has a lot of helpful information and if you’re not tech savvy I hope you partner with someone who is because I think you’ll need it.

The way the street trees are installed are a violation of SDOT’s own street tree rules. The trees planted on the east side of 35th are red oaks, which get 60′ tall and wide. The Street tree rules require an 8′ wide planting strip for this species; these new trees are planted in compacted strips 3-4′ wide. But the most idiotic plantings are on the west side. It was determined that trees could not be planted in the wide, new planting strips along the street due to “utilities”. Not exactly sure what they were referring to; there are overhead wires as well as underground utilities, both of which were in place before the construction. Instead (and this is where it goes off the rails wacko) the arborist planted trees between the sidewalk and the private property lines. It won’t be long before the soil washes off of the root balls due to the significant grade change on this side. Some trees have been planted directly under the canopy of existing trees on private property, actually touching the branches overhead, or squeezed between large trees. Nor will the minor adjustment from one side of the sidewalk to the other prevent these trees from interfering with utilities. If these trees are able to grow at all, they will quickly intrude on both the sidewalk and private property, as well as heave the new sidewalks.

Speaking of which, the contracted SDOT inspector, who was on site for the entire construction period, says all the new ramps have to be rebuilt as they are not ADA compliant. Some have been a couple of times already. When I asked why they weren’t installed correctly the FIRST time, he just shrugged and said “I don’t know”. This from the inspector, for Chrissake. Seattle taxpayers are being fleeced.

As I said above, the way these new trees have been installed is a violation of SDOT’s own rules. If a taxpaying property owner applied for a permit to plant these species in these locations, they would be denied.

As for the sidewalks, I was told this morning by the inspector (who was on site daily during the prolonged construction) that all the new ramps have to be demolished and rebuilt as they are not ADA compliant. How in hell does something like that go unnoticed? When I asked why it wasn’t done right the FIRST time, he shrugged and said “I don’t know”. Well, he damn well should know. Taxpayers are being fleeced.

    They’re baaaack….

SDOT has moved the heavy equipment back onto 35th, closing sections of the street without notice. They just finished this project at the end of October, two months + overdue. Now they’re re-excavating and demolishing sections of the new sidewalks and ramps. They are, at this moment, smashing concrete in front of my neighbor’s house, who have a newborn baby. Nice.

The glaring issues mentioned by Greystreet, visible to anyone with at least one eyeball and two gray cells, were installed without question by these bozos and their inspector. Multiple people reported these issues to SDOT, but they refused to correct the errors as they were in progress. For example, they really did a number on my entry. That’s when I discovered that their blueprint/plans in regard to my property were incorrect. When I pointed this error out to the moron-in-chief, who was sent out to shut me up, he said he wasn’t interested in errors on the blueprint. So there you have it.

Now, neighbors are again to be subjected to this nightmare of noise, destruction, and damage. Perhaps worse, we – and ALL of you – are paying for this boondoggle, including the bizarrely placed ‘street trees’. We received no notice that this was to happen, so have no idea of the scope or duration of the re-construction. I really wish someone would look into this gross waste of time and taxpayer money, but neither Jenny Durkan, Lisa Herbold, or Jesse at KIRO were interested.

I am seeking partnerships with veterinarians who would like to help me with this non-profit. I am also in need of donations (small, reoccurring amounts are most welcome) through my website: http://www.twoatatime.org. With your help, I hope to make this operational by late spring of 2019.
I have included a link to an in depth interview which will provide a lot more information.

I was heavily leaning on the same market opening as Windy City. Though in the beginning I think I’m going to limit it to 50 pies a day, on Friday and Saturday only. As luck would have it, there is a commissary kitchen which I could use on delridge. The only issue I currently see is I am not very tech savy, if someone out there wanted to help me with ideas or knowledge to help with a web based ordering system I’d love you forever. I could also promise one free pie a month for twelve months, with some monetary payment as my business takes off. Please feel free to email me at chefmillard@gmail.com if interested!

Side note: I too agree West Seattle deserves a good Indian restaurant. However, not something I can deliver.

Only place we’ve been is West Seattle Optix, and it was… not a good experience. They keep ridiculously sporadic hours, are vague about prices, and in general decidedly unhelpful. Haven’t found a good local place yet, but thought I’d chime in with what little I do know. G’luck!

    PS
Actually I’ve found Costco, of all places, to be pretty decent for simple eye stuff–you don’t even need to be a member to avail yourself of their services, and while they’re not exactly local they’re only a quick jaunt (well, depending on time of day) across the bridge

According to what the OP wrote, VCA provided them with with a referral and written directions to an emergency facility.
That said, we can’t assume what the OP wrote is entirely true. Emotions were understandably running high when that was posted, and we still haven’t heard from the OP except to say he’s raising funds for potential vet bills and is still trying to disparage VCA, without taking any responsibility for the lack of an emergency plan or knowledge of local veterinary and emergency services. That’s a red flag.
Both of my petsitters provided me with emergency protocols before I hired them. I would expect Camp Crockett to have this on hand for their pack as well. The nearest 24/7 pet emergency hospital is about 10-14 minutes south from Camp Crockett–where the pup ended up receiving care. The side trip wouldn’t have happened if Camp Crockett had a plan for emergencies for their pack members and families.

Yes Mark, I treat humans. However, again, I can triage (assess the severity of the situation) and get them to the right place. I agree with Franci, calling oneself a “Hospital” is a misnomer if they can’t treat an emergency situation or even assess it because of its proximity and get them to the correct place in time. You’d be surprised at the number of humans who go to a clinic and end up being sent to a hospital, but that was only after an assessment was performed and any care that was able to be rendered was done. I see your argument and sass and I raise you a common sense of “If you can, you should”.

    #935102

Perhaps VCA West Seattle Veterinary Hospital should consider a name change, say VCA West Seattle Veterinary Clinic? The very presence of ‘Hospital’ in their name implies to the casual observer that they are equipped to handle emergencies. When people have need of emergency services they go to a hospital.

West Seattle Animal Hospital does handle emergency visits – performs surgery, etc.. They do so with caring and compassion for both pet and their humans.

What I get from reading this thread is that the complaint isn’t that they were unable to treat, but that they were cold and uncaring in their communication. Perhaps just as Crocket should have a list of emergency vets, so should they. What if both organizations had a print out readily available with driving directions to the nearest emergency services.

Given that they are licensed to provide some basic level of care – it does seem that they could have handled the situation better.

I would expect a professional pet care organization to reliably know where the nearest available emergency service is. What if something had happened while a pet is in their care?

@Greystreet: Have you ever seen an ambulance stop at a clinic to comfort the patient on their way to the ER? no, you haven’t. The focus is getting the victim to the people and facilities that can provide to appropriate treatment. Based on your references to 911 and to yourself as being a PCP I presume that you treat people.

Good morning. I am an older, responsible female with a flexible schedule that could be a real fit for your children. I have an active relationship with my 9 and 6 year old granddaughter, and know the importance of being engaging and finding teachable moments. I am a safe driver with a clean driving record and can easily pass a background check. My current vehicle is well kept up, clean, and reliable.
For many years, I have been a caregiver to the elderly for the past seven years, and consider myself very caring and honest in my dealings with them and would be that way with your family. I understand what a trustworthy position you would place on a caregiver with your children.
In the past, I have also worked for an after school program at a local elementary school. Part of that program was an instructional time with age appropriate activities to keep it interesting.
I also enjoy excellent health and would enjoy outdoor time, even in the rain or cold.
I look forward to meeting with you to make sure this would be a good match for everyone involved.
My cell phone number is 206 724 2364.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

I am a primary care provider and while we don’t provide emergency services, we are all trained healthcare providers in my clinic who can triage, bandage and then call 911 or emergency services. I’m going to have to agree with the OP that the lack of action on VCAs part was wrong, giving the animal any kind of attention until the appropriate destination could be decided would have been helping the overall issue at hand–at some point it’s not about the reimbursement and the money, if you’re truly a compassionate healthcare worker whether it’s of humans or animals and you see someone in danger you act, that’s plain and simple.
