When I went to school (class of 1982) we had 6 periods. Each class was 50 minutes and you had 10 minutes to reach your next class. We had staggered lunch periods also. We could go across the street to Lou’s (I went to Cleveland across from Boeing Field). If we cut a class it was reported to the vice principal and he threatened to call home (I admit to cutting one class) :). If we needed to see a teacher we either did it before school or after. Or if we had a free period and the teacher was available we could see them then. I guess things were different then. I know we had our fair share of trouble makers back then but I guess because the area wasn’t so commercial we didn’t have as many problems.

I’ll be there for a little while. I have to take Mom to church at 5:30 so I can come at 4 to meet and greet. Looking forward to it.

I understand about the cafeteria….staggered lunches? I have no idea what the logistics would be, I just know that when I was in high school..way back before….well, never mind – lol..we had staggered lunch times depending on our schedule, some of which were also staggered.

My ex graduated from WSHS in’70, and I remember the stories about hanging out outside, etc. It’ll be interesting to see how the new 6 period schedule plays out.

Sounds good! I’m interested in hearing about the sorts of artistic endeavors folk around here have. I don’t know if I’m an ‘artist’ exactly though I try to conduct myself in artistic manner.

Lately I’ve been dividing my time between sculpture and photography. Rant, as well as Rave, for glassblowing; I’m enamored with the medium but due to being somewhat clumsy my only saving grace is my eye for color. Shaping, at this point, not so much. I enjoy it a great deal and hope that someday it’ll click into place, and am practicing all I can in the meantime. This summer I’m studying welding, blacksmithing and stonecarving, each of which I’m looking forward to immensely.

I’m a prolific photographer, but have only shot digitally and know nothing about _actual_ photography. Once I put together a collection online which is .. suitable for a general audience, I’ll have it linked through my user name here. Until then you’ll just have to take my word for it. In addition to taking photos, I also have done some damaged photograph and document digital restoration / reproduction, which is artistic to a degree. I also want to mention that some of the photojournalism that I see on this blog is out of sight, totally awesome. Props to those who contribute here.

Started by going organic and joining PCC when I moved here 11 years ago.

Quit schlepping water in plastic bottles from PCC and installed a Custom Pure filtration system in the kitchen sink.

Ordered a bunch of kleen kanteens from reusablebags.com and while I was on there ordred organic cotton produce bags as well. We use no plastic water bottles disposable or otherwise.

Have accumulated a large selection of canvas and other reusable shopping bags through my purchasing Chinook’s over the last few years. I’ve bought six so far this year.

I’m a WAHM so my commute is from the bedroom to the living room. I help others WAH that are interested therby reducing their carbon foot print as well.

Love to can but haven’t been able to get anything to grow in my yard since moving here. Holding on to my canning jars for when I can return to doing this. Estate sales are also a great place to find canning jars.

I replaced all my plastic food storage containers with glass.

We compost and recycle zealously through the city.

We unplug appliances the moment we’re done using them.

We buy books and VHS for the kids used from library booksales.

Hubby drives a Prius for his 4.5 mile commute and we’re looking at getting a second hand scooter or motorcycle for him.

Shop online from an ecofriendly manufacturer for ALL our personal care, home care, and nutritional products.

We cloth diapered and use cloth feminine products as well.

Instead of printing receipts for online transactions I copy and paste them into a Word. document and save them in a file of receipts or a tax file. Then I only print them if I need them and they’re never lost.

I scratch cook and bulk buy reducing the packaging.

Our lawn is au naturel. No pesticides, herbicides, etc. We don’t water it. We let nature take its course.

We wash clothes with cold water.

We replaced all our light bulbs inside and out with CFL’s.

When I cook too much and it’s something my family won’t eat I call a friend and she walks over to get it for her family.

I didn’t do it all at once. I started with eating organic and things progressed from there.

Since there are a bunch of posts going around asking if anyone is interested in starting up a group – I thought I would put out mine.

Any budding community has an active artist community, correct? I think it would be great to start up an artist group here in WS! A place for artists to talk, rant, rave and share. It could be be all encompassing – everything from computer, paint, clay or music to more obscure.

    What do you think?

Who would be interested in setting up a place to meet in the next few weeks for members of the straight community?

I get so crazy thinking about all the sub-cultures in our group (single straight man, single straight woman, married man, married woman, widow, widower, single mom, single dad, or breeder). I was at a conference and we debated whether we should be called SSMSSWMMMWWWSMSDB. It’ rather comical.

    Just to clarify:

This is a meeting for a specific community here in West Seattle and not a general meeting of the folks here on the West Seattle Blog who are just interested in meeting new friends. I was simply trying to add clarification that this was not a meet up in general but a meet up for a specific section of the WS community the same as if a group of knitters or gardeners got together with a common interest.

It takes a village and that’s not factoring in absentee parenting. We do NOT live in Mayberry people. Does anyone look at the Family Watchdog website? We have hundred’s of predators in our area.

I believe that many of the parents today are just too comfortable for their children’s best interest. I’d rather have a parent be pi$$ed off with me for butting into their business. Than have a reporter stick a microphone in my face because I witnessed a child being abducted while the parent had their head up their backside.

In this particular scenario I’d have whipped out the cellphone and called 911 to report an abandoned child.

Shibaguyz – No, sorry, still confused.

How about this… Just answer this question: If I am straight, and I do not come with anyone else, but am willing to meet new friends (of any and all communities), will I be welcome?

My understanding re the closed campus idea, is that it’s not possible because of the small size of the cafeteria. They need to let the kids out at lunch to find food. It’s not a new thing,we ate “lunch” at Baskin Robbins in the 70’s quite often.

Some kids will use that 15 min. twice a week for good purposes. They’re often told to see their teachers outside of class time, e.g. to find out what was missed on a sick day or to discuss problems with a class. But it can be really difficult to meet up with a teacher, especially if the kids ride the bus and can’t come early or stay late.

If they’re really strict about tardiness, they might have fewer wandering away during that short break.

The Seattle Aquarium might be of service as far as providing information of what can or should be done??? (Not really sure but is worth a try.) They have a research program called “SEARCCH” (Seattle Aquarium Research Center for Conservation and Husbandry).

I worry about that little guy crossing the street, and if there are ever pups…a whole family trying to cross the street – geesh.

How long have you been on Alki? We have seen that otter or someone related to it dating back probably a decade – have seen it cross Alki Ave and galumph down one of the alleys in the block near Pegasus etc. Does seem precarious but somehow it manages to survive. — TR

I am a teacher, and I’d like to add to this discussion that, really and truly, the very best teacher appreciation gifts are simply notes from students expressing specifically what they appreciate. Second best are notes from parents expressing what they appreciate (not always the same things as their students!) I do also enjoy gifts students themselves put some effort into, whether successful by adult standards or not; it’s always touching when a student finds time to make something because they want to share it with a teacher. All the Starbucks/B&N, etc, gift cards in the world, kind and generous as they are, don’t hold a candle to a genuine, heartfelt “thank you” from a child.

Now, please, I don’t say this to make everybody think they must force their child to make something or write an epistle. Just encourage good manners with a standard “thank you” note.

Congratulations, Andrea! What a wonderful happy time.

I would like to add how much we love Anka and Bobo Botanicals. As you’ve seen, Anka goes above and beyond for her customers. I LOVE that when you send someone flowers, she will send you a picture of the arrangement. It’s so nice to see what was sent. Her service is top notch and she is truly an asset to our West Seattle community.

To add to Todd’s grass comment, the *dandelions* are also slowed, so I might have a shot at getting them under control this year!

    More:

    * Peas and greens like to grow in cooler weather, and gardening is more pleasant in general.

    * No watering!

    * I can wear all of the things I’ve just taught myself how to knit (and keep knitting more).

    * Fewer people crowding my beach running routes.

Alright, hopefully I’m convincing someone, cos I sure ain’t convincing me with all this hot air. :)

It never feels like enough, but here is my “green” list:

    1. Carpool every day to work (I work with my husband – so that part is easy! :)

    2. Use canvas bags for grocery shopping – easy habit to start. I’m also going to get one of these so I’m never without:

    http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?searchId=14435827&itemIndex=3&CATID=255&PRODID=74340

    3. Compost (small container near sink – large green container buried in backyard)

    4. Craigslist all possible items for free before trashing (someone took all our old bathroom fixtures – toilet, sink, doors and all!)

    5. Keep heat off in house except for dead of “winter” – blankets and sweaters otherwise

    6. Unplug appliances when not in use and keep lights off unless I’m in the same room

    7. Use degradable doggy scoop bags! :)

    8. Joined the ‘green team’ at work – right now we’re working on how to reduce paper usage.

Anyone get their newsletter from Seattle City Light. Is your power really coming from ‘green energy’ if you pay $12 more per month?

    Hi!

We just did this a couple months ago. The place we went was Total Reclaim at 2200 6th Ave S Phone 343-7443; at that time their hours were 8-4:30 M-Sun. We took a tv & pc and it was like 30ish bucks as I recall. I believe you can search for recycling services on the King Co website.
