ToddinWestwoodMemberAnyone else in W.S. getting a large number of hangup calls in the last few days on the land line?
I did a ” * 69 ” to find out the number of who was doing it, but all I got was 000-000-0000.

JiggersMemberI advertised on craigslist for a room to rent and left my personal number for them to call me back. The same guy called me back twice about five days apart. He himself was looking for a roomie. He claimed to be a blind person the first time and the other time he claimed to be a rich gay man living in Magnolia who had a lot of cash and would be able to let me live very cheap over their. Both times he was very nice and tried to get some info out of me, but I’m no dummy and only gave him my Email to send pictures of his place. He on both occassions, hung up on me abruptly. I know its the same guy doing this. I retrieved the number on the first call he made, but the second time he called he had it blocked. Its a Verizon number with no message return. I have the number, and if he calls me again Its going to the police. Here I am struggling to find a decent room price and be honest about myself.

GinaParticipantAren’t there automatic probe calls that are checking what time of day people pick up their phones? And future telemarketer calls go out at the time of the most pickups?
I don’t quite understand how it works, anyone know more about that stuff?

KenParticipantThere are several scenarios that can be matched to hangup calls.
During political seasons, the auto dialer’s paid for by many campaigns, are seriously buggered. Since I am a PCO and on every phone bank imaginable, I sometimes get 5 hangups or incomplete calls for every one that gets through to the voice mail. (I only answer those who have real caller id info)
Second is telemarketers. Since we have a mortgage, that gets around the do not call listing for each company that owned the mortgage before it was sold to the big multinational company. They use call center software that will dial scatter shot to 10 numbers at the same time and only put the droid on to the line that the AI software determines was answered by a human. The rest of the calls get dropped and shuffled back in the queue.
Third is some one you know. Myriad scenarios can instigate this and only you can fill in the reasons.
I remember a rural phone system that rang crazily during thunderstorms due to a poor ground near the CO. This is not at all likely now :)

KatherineLParticipantI’ve been getting these for some time now, several a day some days. I screen my calls, but when I picked up by accident once, no one was there. It’s extremely annoying, as I do get up and head for the phone every time it rings.

TrickParticipantI’ve noticed at my business that some calls are recordings that are voice activated by the reciever saying “Hello”
When I answer with the name of the business it’s always silent, unless I say “Hello” and then you hear it a click and then it triggers the recording.

KenParticipantIt may seem cruel, and you will catch a few innocents, but starting the voicemail greeting with “Hello?” followed by a 2-3 second pause, will often trigger the AI into thinking it has a live one and passing it on to the marketing droid.
If your lucky you will catch snatches of inventive cursing as they figure out the software was fooled.
I am reminded of a friend who recorded the message ” the number you have dialed XXX-xxxx, has been disconnected” and used it as his answering machine greeting for several years.

charlabobParticipantWe have a hangup caller from North Carolina — they call anywhere from 4:30 – 6:30 A.M. — we hear noise and babbling in some foreign language in the background but it isn’t as if they’re talking to us.
They hang up when we yell at them and then call back. (Bob thinks they don’t hear us and react.) It happened a few months ago, stopped, and started up again Friday. The number doesn’t show up in reverse phone lookups and usually can’t be called back (the number you are calling is no longer in service).
A couple of times I called back and got a fast busy signal. We’ve finally started keeping a log of the calls (didn’t before, because we always thought it was the last time.) We don’t know anyone in N.C. and I doubt if that’s really where they.
Bob thinks they’re a dialer run amuck, which means I have no idea how to trace it and stop it. Anyone have any ideas?

miwsParticipantKen, many years ago, I had a relative and her two kids staying with me as she and her husband were having marital problems.
.
The husband kept calling (we’d screen the calls on the machine, this was before caller I.D.) and he kept calling begging for us let him talk to her.
.
I finally tired of it, and recorded the disconnected recording as my outgoing message, and just told other family, friends, and work of the situation, and to go ahead and leave a message.
.
It’s been so long ago, I can’t remember if it fooled the one that it was intended to, but I believe it worked for awhile.

JanSParticipantCharla…have you googled the phone #? I have put numerous phone #’s into google search XXX-XXX-XXXX, and a lot of the time I’ll get back a website of people’s complaints/reports of the number, and usually it’s a telemarketer gone mad….as sometimes they have a whole bank of #’s. Sometimes it even takes you to who the telemarketer is….

charlabobParticipantTried it and got a website that claimed to tell me the person’s name address and serial number —

If only I would pay them. :-)

JanSParticipantyeah…I hate those sites that tell you they can find out who it is, and then want to charge you an arm and a leg…
hehe..I just called your “number”…I like the oh, so sinister voice saying “We are unable to complete your call at this time. Please call again later” and then…even more sinister…”Message 12, switch 5-5-1″ lol…
June 8, 2008 at 7:33 am #626895
JanSParticipantI simply can’t let some things go – lol…OK, so..that # is in the Greenville/Williamston, NC area…I assume you already know this (by the way, Williamston’s web page is really bad – lol)…anyway…there is a business in Williamston called…NC Telecenter…and it has a similar but not quite same #252-792-2044. I have a theory. This is a business that rents out temporary business/conference rooms…perhaps it’s a telemarketer/fly by night operation renting there? just a theory…lol…the time of your calls surprises me, though…

hey, what else am I gonna do past midnite on Saturday nite? lolol…

beachdrivegirlParticipantAll zeros is Blockbuster telling you about your late movies. At least that is who calls me from that number. :)

IrukandjiParticipantQuick Info at the library has a Cole’s Reverse Directory. 386-4636. They can find out ANYTHING at the Library. Need a great cookie recipe? Need to know some obnoxious bit of info? Just call and ask the Quick Info desk!

pamMemberWe used to get a lot of wrong numbers early in the morning from people on the east coast who would thought they had to dial 9 (we have a traditional west seattle prefix) from the office they were calling from. It would start ringing at 5:30 in the morning. Took a few days to remember to tell people they didn’t have to dial 9 before making their call!
The new solicitor calls that hang up as soon as you answer drive me crazy. I don’t answer any call with an 800 number or ‘unknown’ on caller id anymore.
