Yikes, DataMuse – that’s completely irresponsible! I hope you rang your bell at them! :-)

I was thinking yesterday (while driving around a traffic circle no less) that I may have been too broad in saying the car in the circle ~always~ has the ROW. It’s really more about the simultaneity of the vehicle arrivals and not so much who’s in or out of the circle.

A good way to judge it, Clueless, would be to take that same situation with the Mini and remove the traffic circle. Would you have yielded to the Mini then? If it was close enough you would have, the traffic circle shouldn’t have changed that. If it was not that proximate than you were correct to go ahead.

I have noticed this situation before and realize that some people think they are grandfathered into right of way by the car in front of them. Say you are going West and two cars are coming from your right, going Southbound. S1 arrives at the same time as you do and S2 is 25 feet behind it. You should allow S1 to proceed, then S2 should allow you to go as you were at the intersection before they were. What happens though is that S2 often seems to think that as long as you are stopped for S1 they get to go too!

A 400# safe was stolen from my Mom’s basement. We know for certain it was in the house around the first week of July but didn’t notice it was missing until this last Saturday (obviously not something we accessed regularly, you figure stuff in a safe is safe). We found the safe approximately 1 block from the house with its door missing and contents gone, it was dumped down a slight gully on the west side of the road. This is on 21st Avenue SW across the street and south of the entrance to the Sanislo playground.

I am grabbing at straws here in hopes someone may have noticed this safe being moved from the house and down the street or being dumped out of a car or van. We believe it would have taken two people or possibly one person and a hand truck to do this. If you happen to recall seeing this type of activity and can provide any details (descriptions of people, license plate numbers, even a date you witnessed the activity, etc.), it would be much appreciated if you could contact the police and reference case #15-363728. We have some suspicions of how this may have happened and additional information may help to confirm or remove those suspicions. Unfortunately because what’s left of the safe has been out in the weather for a while, the police are not able to fingerprint it. So without additional information, this will wind up as yet another unsolved robbery.

Thanks in advance for any help, I’m hoping our West Seattle community will come through again.

    Two things:

#1 – PLEASE call CL and ask if they have solicitors working your area. If they do, they might want to know about the behavior – we also heard from someone who had an alleged solicitor that they said was outright rude.

#2 – JTB – on the WSB FB page, there is a post about a 16-year-old girl missing from Kent who a reader believes came to her door with a clipboard last night. Might have been the two you saw.

That sounds weird. However, also yesterday two girls looking to be high school age were canvassing our neighborhood for CenturyLink. I cut short their pitch, pointing to our No Solicitors sign and one said they just wanted to inform us of a coming Century Link upgrade in our area. I noticed they had clipboards and handed some flyer to our next door neighbor.

Today as I walked down to my car from my house I noticed a man parked infront of my house in a dark purple car. As I approached my car I smiled as I walked past him and he said “hey how are you? I was just coming to say hi to you!” I again smiled and got into my car. When I arrived back at my house a half hour later he was still there, sitting in his car. I quickly went into my house and about 20 minutes later he was at my side door of my house. He was an African American man, wearing a bright green shirt with a century link logo on it and was carrying a few folders. I cracked the door a bit and he gave me a small speech about switching to century link etc etc. I told him I wasn’t interested at the moment but he could leave his card or any information with me, he said he didn’t have it on him. I found that to be odd, a salesman not having any information pertaining to what he was selling. He also wasn’t wearing a name badge or any identification at all, in fact, when I first opened the door, that was one of the first things he mentioned. (Not having any identification as he quickly explained was left in his car by accident) this just seemed all too strange to me and I was wondering if anyone else had a similar run in. This was today at about 2:40 PM near the West Seattle Athletics Club.

JTB: What similarities does current Seattle policy have with anything in the three decades post WWII back when the average joe/jill was free to start a business? I see very few if any.

I mean no offense to Thomas Piketty, but he is a young French academic who apparently grew up under trotskyite parents and hardline socialism according to Wiki. As an outsider to the business world, it is a wonder he sees the value of capitalism at all. Kudos to him for discovering the wonders of capitalism from his lofty perch on the ivory tower of academia. But I would be skeptical to call him an expert on what historically made capitalism work in America. France and the rest of Europe is a complete mess right now as they are drowning in debt from socialist policies and centralized government. Piketty’s utopian idea for a global tax on wealth is a double edged sword. Would you really want to trade your sovereignty and dilute your constitutional rights to get your piece of some jerk in Russia? I think Piketty needs to read the Federalist Papers.

Over regulation is a far bigger issue than taxation. I can begrudgingly tolerate paying more taxes on revenue than some rich guy, but I can’t tolerate regulations and policies that keep me from making any revenue at all. If you believe that Seattle bureaucrats are simply incompetent and just like the sound of the world “socialism”, then maybe they should just get out of the way and let people go to work.

Seattle collects more money today than it ever has. The issue isn’t revenue, it’s spending–Too many needless programs and too many useless departments built on piles of stifling regulation. Is there any City Council candidate talking about balancing budgets, reducing spending or relaxing business regulations? No. It’s all about how much “free” stuff they can promise to get your vote.

Maybe I won’t vote NOTA. Maybe I will just write in my own name.

It appears the director of the CIA had his personal e-mail account hacked and sensitive documents were found, including profiles of CIA employees, including psychological and security profiles (via MSN News). Don’t know if that information was marked “Classified” or not but teen-agers were able to obtain very sensitive and personal information easily via the director’s personal AOL account. Will the Republicans pull the Director in for hearings and harassment? Will they also pull in someone from the Office of Personnel Management to grill about the hack job that exposed thousands of federal worker personal information? Of course these folks aren’t running against the Republicans for office, so it’s likely that only Hillary will be grilled about e-mails…. over and over and over.

captainDave, things worked pretty well for everyone in the three decades following WWII. Distribution of new wealth was accomplished by tax policy. Seems there was plenty of motivation to produce–for the owners, for management, for investors, for employees.

The exhaustively researched analysis of capitalism by Thomas Piketty highlighted how distributive policies that favor the elite have historically tended to result in less efficient use of surplus capital compared to the more equitable distribution I referred to above. So again, if you want the pie to grow bigger and faster, it’s better to put the money to more productive use than on high stakes financial games.

I’m beginning to find this exchange to be sort of pointless in that I appreciate your ire at local bureaucrats but not your attempt to assign some sort of socialist ideology as motivation. I see them as trying to make city government work without reliable revenue and limited options for how to make up for it. There are obvious issues of (in)competence, complacency and inertia that characterize city government and services. That makes me believe trying to elect competent, well-intended candidates or at least shaking up the council is better than doing nothing which is exactly what voting NOTA is.

Thank you all for all these responses. Many good suggestions and has been quite a boost to my confidence. So, thanks very much for that!

I have done commissions before, mostly for friends or friends of friends. I can be contacted at lucas@modfoo.com or 206.372.4528 – text is usually best as I have ear protection on a lot.

Also, if anyone has throw-away, or unused wood let me know and I’ll see if I can do anything with it.

    Thanks again!

JTB: I will give you that the size of the economy looks to be slightly growing in terms of dollar measurement. However, it is really in contraction when you consider the massive influx of baseless money by the Fed. The upward redistribution of wealth by our government to corporate and banking elite is atrociously corrupt. By law (via antitrust legislation), there should have never been a situation where any private sector entity was too big to fail.

How can the government constitutionally re-distribute wealth without killing the incentive to produce? Private property rights are essential in providing incentive for people to produce beyond their basic needs. When people advocate taking money from the rich to give to the poor, it sets up a destructive dynamic. Who the hell want’s to strive to be rich when you know that it will just be taken away at some point? Better off to sit back and let government hand you what it takes from others who are stupid enough to try.

We have had plenty of downward redistribution policy applied in the US in recent years. More people are on distributive entitlements today than ever–and poverty is still on the rise. Government redistribution of wealth (up or down) has historically done nothing good for the majority of citizens.

The middle class is “economically stagnated” (I prefer the words “largely destroyed”) because people do not have many options outside of working for government or some large corporation. Traditionally, small business accounted for a substantial segment of private sector employment along with the majority of job growth and individual prosperity. Seattle seems to be leading the charge to eradicate small businesses in comparison to many other large cities across the US. Social misfits like me, who are not qualified nor interested in working for big gov or big corp, are suppose to just sit around wondering what happened to the middle class while our leftist leaders continue to dump sand in the wheels of entrepreneurial ingenuity.

It’s so frustrating to be honked at for driving legally. With all the road rage common these days, honking is a ballsy move even if the honker is in the right.

PLS, good Idea on the YT video. I chose my sceen name based on all of the clueless things I see going on in WS. Glad to know I am not alone in noticing things.

Spot on, KBear. The car in the circle (the intersection) has the right of way. Always. The hard part, as you allude, is determining if 25 feet behind that first car is “at about the same time.” I’d say not, however I have started just hanging back and letting people on the right, even if I’m clearly there first, go ahead. My knowing and following the regulations is meaningless if the other driver is not going to. Better to be safe.

I’d love to see a YouTube “Driving in West Seattle” primer for people to cover traffic circles, unregulated intersections (i.e. no stop signs), parking, residential speed limits and other continually problematic areas of driving around here. Ignorance is not bliss for the rest of us and intentional violation is dangerous for all.

The way traffic circles are supposed to work, and the way they work in other places, is that you always yield to traffic that’s already in the circle. Washington law confuses the issue by saying “yield to the right” applies to traffic circles, since traffic within the circle should always be approaching from the left (unless they’re driving the wrong way around the circle.) People get so hung up on “yield to the right” that they forget the first part of the law: “when two vehicles approach at about the same time.” If someone is already in the intersection, then they were first and would have the right of way.

CaptainDave, close, but no cigar. The size of the pie has been growing, slowly but growing. What has happened is the re-distribution of new wealth to the top, resulting in economic stagnation of middle class wage earners and inefficient use of the excess capital. I agree that a re-distribution of wealth toward the lower four quintiles of the population would no doubt provide the resources necessary to create and support more small businesses. But it is distributive policy more so than regulatory policy that is the heart of the matter about why small business is challenged to thrive.
