nomotheteParticipantI’ve been told that I should be trying to sell the things I make in a more “retail” situation. I’ve been working with wood for most of my life and fancy myself fairly good at it. I’m posting this to get a range of feedback on some items I’ve made recently because I don’t know how to price things.
I’m hoping for two things. A)Are they attractive to a wide audience? B) What price range would you expect to see it at in a retail setting?
I should mention that almost everything shown is made from rescued/reclaimed wood.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

HelperMonkeyParticipantI can only answer A – yes, they’re awesome! I have no idea what you would charge for custom pieces like that, but they are beautiful and unique. Go you!

SueParticipantVery beautiful work! You might want to pop in Village Woodworks in the Alaska Junction and get an idea of pricing of similar items since they have a lot of wood stuff. I don’t know if all their items are theirs, or if they take consignment, so you could ask that too. They might even have an idea where to go if they don’t.

PangolinPieParticipantWOW, gorgeous! I love it – these are truly works of art. What’s that lovely desk sell for? You might try Etsy for smaller pieces. Or perhaps participate in the Art Walk? In any case, these are great and I’m sure you’ll find a market for them.

DaveBParticipantAlso check out Northwest Woodworker’s Gallery http://www.nwwoodgallery.com/ for pricing ideas.

miwsParticipantYes, very beautiful work.
As far as what to charge; can’t help there. I have absolutely no concept of what stuff is worth. I have no idea, with many types of items, whether something is worth $5.00 or $500.00.

Ms. SparklesParticipantI believe you’re underselling yourself saying you are “fairly good” – if they function as good as they look, you are an accomplished wood artisan.
.
If I had a space for them, I would pay $800 for the patio table made from scraps and $200-$300 for the bench.
.
The night light boxes could easily sell for $15, $25 if you could water proof them for outdoor use. While you could get $35-$50 for the light house.
.
A custom crooked door that beautiful would cost $900-1,500 and the desk set might go for as much as $1,500; $1,250 for the desk & $250 for the cabinet
.
That mirror is easily a $2,000 piece.

squareeyesParticipantA few years ago I bought a nice looking desk with a drawer at Village Woodworks for $500. It was manufactured in California, not hand-crafted as yours is, so you could charge a lot more. Maybe Twilight Gallery in the Junction would be interested in selling some of your pieces? Some of your items really do look like works of art.

blblParticipantGorgeous! Try Amazon’s new service, Handmade at Amazon. I think it’s easy to become a seller there, I believe they take $1 per sale or something like that.
Also, look into the Bellevue Arts Museum’s artfair in July. It’s juried, so you have to apply and be accepted to sell there, but I understand it’s a very good place to sell and they LOVE this quality of work.

anonymeParticipantDo you do private commissions? If so, could you provide private contact info?
Sometimes Capers features work by local artists.

nomotheteParticipantThank you all for all these responses. Many good suggestions and has been quite a boost to my confidence. So, thanks very much for that!
I have done commissions before, mostly for friends or friends of friends. I can be contacted at lucas@modfoo.com or 206.372.4528 – text is usually best as I have ear protection on a lot.
Also, if anyone has throw-away, or unused wood let me know and I’ll see if I can do anything with it.
Thanks again!
